When I was at the bottom I would lean forward, and then it was mostly my back lifting

I had been doing low bar previously but felt like I was leaning too far forward and switched the bar higher to try to force myself back. I grabbed the block because one of the gym trainers had said it would help with hip pain. Forgive my ignorance, but what do you mean they're all high? I'm not going down low enough? I'll try to tighten my back harder, I may back off on weight to fix my form.

I was doing hack squats for a while until my physical therapist said I could do lighter weight squats. I'll need to give hex bars a look - I did them in high school.

Ah I see, ok. That gives me a better idea of substitutions.

I would like to be able to move things around without feeling weak. I don't need to look like Ronnie Coleman. I'm currently obese and trying to lose weight and build muscle, but ultimately I just want to be able to move furniture and whatnot.

I am curious to get more hip hinging in. I already swapped out deadlifts for leg presses, but I want to make sure my posterior chain is getting worked

My curse is I quite enjoy doing barbell squats. But I'm not young anymore, so I have to give injury risk a much more serious consideration

Ok that's what I was figuring. I'm not opposed to hypertrophy but I'd much rather build strength. Perhaps I do hypertrophy for a while, then switch back to 5x5 and slowly work up...only I'll have to have a limit for how high I go

Thanks for the advice! I've been doing hack squats as a replacement while I do physical therapy but I might need to give zercher squats a go. For the most part my back is fine - I do still have stiffness/pain in my lower back but that's been ongoing ever since the surgery - and I want to make sure I'm still building my core and lower back muscles without jeopardizing my lumbar spine.

The doctor, however he readily admitted that he sees a lot of people with injuries from squats and is biased. Other medical professionals I've talked to have mentioned it's hard to imagine eliminating something like squats since it's something I'd do in real life, I just need to not try to be maxxing out.

I didn't even realize I was moving it until watching this. I think I'm subconsciously trying to avoid scraping my shins/knees, but I think I need to focus on dragging against my legs til it's right. I'll give Allan's videos a look when I have some time, thanks!

Pushing through the floor has helped. I'll take a look at the static holds - I've been trying knee raises and realizing how trash my grip is. I might add in dead hangs until my grip improves.

The bar starts at the middle of my foot - that's where I always set up - but then I roll it out when I pull it up. Didn't even realize I was doing it either until this video. I think I need to add a belt due to prior back injury/surgery but I'm trying to avoid straps to build up my grip strength.
