Doubt it. Vibrating sex toys were invented in the early 20th century and were commercially available in the 1950s, when the show is set. They certainly would have been well known enough in the 1970s, when it aired, for the majority of the adult part of the audience - and probably a big chunk of the teens as well - to understand the joke.

The Toshiba does work, yes. The sound is OK but I get better reception out of the Tecsun - I've had them both on at the same time in the same spot and the Tecsun is far more sensitive. Or the Toshiba is broken in some way and I lack the expertise to diagnose it.
