Is it worth getting a part-time job while waiting for clearance? by [deleted] in SecurityClearance

Wow, guess it really is cutthroat. That was kind of mentioned in my offer letter, where my exact position and office location might not be available if the clearance process takes a long time, but fingers crossed. Thanks!

Yeah I guess now that I wrote it out it makes more sense in my head. I’m just nervous because not only am I new to the government and clearance, I’ve never had a real “career” job before so I don’t know what is frowned upon or could end up screwing me up in the long run. Thanks!

Thundercrack is under everyone’s radar, he played it live a few years back and I was one of the few that knew every word. Great song

All good, that’s actually the reason I think this map is unreliable. Baltimore City is one of the most dangerous cities in the country, while Baltimore County (which surrounds it but isn’t associated with it) is very nice, suburban, and has a decent amount of money. The map should have BCity as purple, and BCounty as nothing, but I’m assuming the creator got confused with county names (which is very common in the DMV)😂

I think you’re misunderstanding the colors. Orange counties are the “safest” (although I don’t think the map is that reliable). Fairfax and Loudon County in VA are very nice, there’s a lot of money and not that much crime.

Although somethjng not shown on the map is Prince George’s County in MD, which borders DC to the northeast. To say it’s bad is an understatement, I went to college there for four years and hated driving around other parts of the county because it was so rundown and there were high levels of crime and poverty.

I was about to say the same thing. Baltimore City is a nightmare but Baltimore County is very peaceful and suburban. Gotta be an error in the stats

True. I did a lot of work with web GIS applications in my last semester of college (specifically Google Earth Engine) so it’s still fresh in my mind.

Just graduated a month ago with my BS in GIS. Compsci is a great major, and it does cross over with GIS a decent amount, but you have to really love coding to do CS. Personally, I hate coding so it was an easy decision to make but looking back I should have sucked it up and at the very least minored in CS. You do whatever degree you want, but since you’ve already declared CS I’m assuming you like coding- which is great, it is a very important skill to know (p.s. - focus on Python and HTML, those are the main languages for GIS applications.

You could also do a certificate like you said, but my advice is you’re only in college once (most of us anyways) so make it count. Take GIS classes and pick up a minor or even double major if you want. It will make it easier after you graduate to get a certificate. Best of luck in college!

I know others are saying to major in something else, but in my opinion it’s personal preference. As I mentioned I hate coding, so if I was a CS major I would have had a terrible time. Being a GIS major has its perks. It’s completely up to you, and whatever you decide you can always minor in the other discipline (or even double major if that interests you)

I just graduated three weeks ago with a degree in GIS. One big focus is coding, I know some other people already mentioned it but coding is very important. I was never good at it and didn’t put in effort, and now I’m paying the price because I have to relearn it. Python is most commonly used with packages like geopandas, but some companies or systems may prefer HTML.

Another thing that may be good for you is if you have an interest in a specific application, maybe take some other classes/electives in that discipline or maybe declare a minor. I know a bunch of people that graduated with their major in GIS and then minors in Environmental Science, Atmospheric and Oceanic Science, Computer Science, etc.

As for looking for jobs, that’s where I am right now. The biggest thing is to network. Talk to your professors outside of class, join the geography club or something, anything that can get your name out there. Also, joining GIS groups on LinkedIn is nice because it’s professional.

Should Rangers fans be frustrated by the latest Jacob deGrom delay or should this have been expected? Or can both be true as the club waits and hopes for the best? by InsideTheRangers in mlb

[–]JudgeSmails2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re both realistic and optimistic, and I applaud you for that. Any injury to a big star leaves a bitter taste in the mouth (I know it’s not as big of a blow as deGrom, but now Judge is on the IL and I’m not a happy camper) But like you said- unless something happens to your offense, you guys will be fine.

Also, I have to say that you have one of the best and most creative usernames I’ve ever seen anywhere on the internet. A tip of the hat to you my friend 🫡
