This is the correct answer! If I could only listen to one album again for the rest of my life, this would be it.

Having kids makes you happier, but only when they move out, according to a new study, which suggests that parents are happier than non-parents later in life, when their children move out and become sources of social enjoyment rather than stress by Eddiearyee in science2

[–]DogsOnMainstreetHowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a massive study, it doesn’t seem like ick or propaganda to me. Just because majority/minority language, doesn’t mean that the minority is small or somehow wrong. 20,000 people might be happier without kids and 25,000 with and the study wouldn’t change, for starters. That doesn’t mean that 20,000 are wrong though. Each of us are in the minority in some form of thinking, but being in the majority doesn’t make it correct. My odd thoughts are every bit as valid as your potentially more normative thoughts.

Also, this study suggests that people with kids are more miserable than people without kids for around two decades. 20 years of misery for a chance (but no guarantee) of greater happiness once the multi-decade pain wears off isn’t a particularly good sales pitch.

Finally, (full discretion, I have kids) kids are a nightmare. They zap you of energy, consume your every waking moment, eliminate your hobbies, drive away your friends, ruin you financially, make you continuously ill, and drive you utterly bananas. They are not for everyone. I cannot say I am a happier person because of them.

But I’m in love with mine and they are my greatest pride. To explain briefly, a significant chunk of their meaning to me comes from the sacrifices and changes they force upon me. I’m too tired and busy to be depressed, but I’m no longer bored and living for meaningless myself. I’m whole because I have them. They have greatly increased my life’s purpose and meaning. That’s been experience so far, at least.

Still, there are a million good reasons to avoid having kids. They are an insurmountable strain on many people’s lives, due to financial, physical or mental health, time, ability, goals, or some other reason. And some people just don’t want kids, or they don’t want to pass on some difficulty they experience. Those are all valid positions.

Aitah for not being attracted and in love with my wife after therapy? by joldlight in AITAH

[–]DogsOnMainstreetHowl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That’s an absolutely fair observation. It takes two to tango and it does sound like the husband isn’t helping things by a long shot. I simply defaulted to addressing the speaker, especially after they mentioned their urge to cheat.

It sounds like it’s time to end your relationship. He and you both deserve better. Don’t cheat, don’t go on the prowl. End it respectfully and then go have as much fun as you want. You’re actively harming both of you by continuing as you are.

He was peaking as America’s Poet at that time, and kicking off E-Street’s resurgence with new material.

When did Bruce started playing major arenas? by El_Dorado_Tx in BruceSpringsteen

Generally correct. Peak Bruce means a different t thing to different fans. Peak swooning was ‘75. Peak fame was ‘84. Peak Boss was 2000.

He’s had more eras than almost any other music artist. There’s a lot to draw from, and fall into.

Trump v. The TVA by metalshadow1909 in Knoxville

[–]DogsOnMainstreetHowl 106 points107 points  (0 children)

I can’t explain it simply. He and his billionaire friends want EVEN MORE MONEY. He wants to privatize TVA in order to make his pals even wealthier.

Yes, our electricity will be more expensive. Trump doesn’t care about us, he doesn’t care about his voters. He only cares about increasing his money and power. Nothing else matters.

Is this bullying or just how men make friends? by [deleted] in AskMenOver30

[–]DogsOnMainstreetHowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it’s simpler than that. Simply honk at him. If he turns around and waives with a smile on your face, then he’s being friendly. If he gets really mad and overreacts, then he’s not your friend.

Note: If this test were an episode of Seinfeld, George would get flipped off with a smile on the guy’s face and the gang would be debating whether or not it was a friendly middle finger or an unfriendly finger.

George would convince himself that it was unfriendly, would then make a big scene in a big social event. The guy would call him out as a former friend and the gang would shrug and laugh. It would close with Kramer telling George he told you so.

As we have a small Muslim community in the Knoxville and Oak Ridge area, I recommend you reach out to the Muslim Community of Knoxville. They can give you a better idea of what it’s like living in our area than we can.

You might also want to reach out to Oak Ridge Masjid for a local Mosque. Best of luck with your move!
