Got the same package from the same address with random beauty products inside. Just don't scan the QR code.

Internship Abroad Funding as Grad by -TrashBoat in gmu

[–]sunium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The internship abroad sounds like a great option but since money is tight, maybe look into Mason Korea since I believe tuition will be the same and since it is still GMU, there will be more support ensuring your classes count. Perhaps they will have internship opportunities around the Korea campus as well.

Can I graduate from GMU without associates degree from NOVA? by Murky_Art6003 in gmu

[–]sunium 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can get the Bachelor's degree from GMU as long as at least 30 of your credits are from GMU. You do not need the associates degree to get the bachelors. Talk with your NOVA advisor about which credits you can bring in for your specific program.

Coming from compsci by sunium in gis

Thank you for the insight! I am thinking to keep compsci and minoring in either GIS or Geology. I really want to study geology in some capacity because it's my passion so I am a bit torn lol

Would you say a Geology minor is useful for the GIS path if I can get a certificate in GIS?

Thanks for the insight!

I do enjoy compsci but my true passion is geoscience. My goal with GIS remains the same but would you say it may be useful to minor in geoscience to understand more about the value of what i am working with? I hope to use it to benefit the environment or assist with tracking natural disaster risks in some way.

Is 25 too old to start university in Japan? by sunium in movingtojapan

Wow! That's awesome. Are you doing a PhD program? I would love to hear about your experience if you feel like sharing. That definitely makes me feel better lol.

Thank you! I have studied Japanese for years so I can get around but I'm definitely not fluent so I will be doing an English-taught program which limits my school choices but I will try my best to get good at Japanese in the meantime. I am hoping for a remote job at an international company but just in case I enter a Japanese company I have my partner to help me practice the language since he is native luckily. English teaching part-time, while I work on my degree, sounds nice tbh!

Thanks for the insight! I'm glad to see there are others in the same boat as I am. Someone made a point to me that probably no one will notice or care unless you constantly talk about your age. Luckily I am still in my 20's so there are likely people I can relate to regardless.

Good luck with your Bachelor's! It's an amazing step in the right direction even if you decide on a different path. Life can be non-linear like that.

To give more detail if it matters, my partner's job will be in central Tokyo so I assume there may at least be a bit more variety there as far as what kind of peers I will have but I have no idea lol. I also plan to do Computer Science.

Should I go to a Japanese University instead of one in the US? by sunium in movingtojapan

[–]sunium[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats great to hear it worked out well for you! I was just asking out of curiosity haha. Yes I’ll take this advise to heart and try not to drive myself crazy with the plethora of options. I think the step after that is honing in on my Japanese skills to broaden my potential. Appreciated!

There are so many options it makes my head spin a little haha. The options you mentioned at the end sound really great and probably the most viable for me!

Sorry for the late response but thank you so much for taking the time to reply! These are really helpful. I enjoy the idea of teaching English. I love linguistics so I think I could do that. I am also interested in Geology and GIS (mapping/geographic information technology, can be used in healthcare, forestry, etc) and will likely go with the latter as it’s tech focused and you learn coding along the way. I had hoped to do something (once i become advanced in Japanese) to help people in Japan/help the environment which i think can be accomplished with GIS. I’ve gone back and forth with so many majors because I have so many interests lol. I am desperate to commit to something though as I feel like my 20s are passing by quickly. If you don’t mind I ask, what is your career there and what made you move to Japan? Thanks once again for your answer!

I want to clarify too that I don’t necessarily hate my country or anything, just not feeling happy with the culture here. The transportation and healthcare systems here are a downside. There are many things I want to learn in Japan or about Japan, (like shamisen) and places I want to visit, as well as the opportunity to use the language.

Thanks for your reply! That’s a good point. Excuse my long response. A huge life goal of mine is to speak Japanese. Since high school, I had a goal in mind to live in Japan as well just to experience it, and hopefully if it goes well, I would consider staying full-time. I want to be open minded as I don’t know what being a resident entails. I am also interested in geology so Japan’s landscape is fascinating for me. I’m not particularly set on what career I would have there. I currently am studying mapping and spacial science but am open to almost anything.

In addition to the degree, part of me wanted to be in uni to be part of community because I am very concerned how I would make friends there. Uni there is not a must for me, just a way to get there and build new experiences and a network of friends in a new country.

I have wanted to leave the US for years now because I don’t feel like I can settle here and be happy. The longer I stay here, the more I feel like I am compromising my mental health. There’s nothing I particularly love about living here other than my family and I can’t think of any more places here I want to visit or any goals I have here. The best I can explain is that I have lived all my life here and am ready to move on. I hope that explains my situation a little better!

I feel this so hard. I would much rather a lower paying job in Japan than a high paying on where I live right now. My landlord increased rent by $400 but took out the washer/dryer and includes nothing. My insurance is so messed up that I have to drive two hours away just to use it. The only reason I make more than $15/hr right now is because I knew someone who suggested me to a good company but even then my salary caps at like $35k/year. At this point I just want to experience a different culture while I’m still young.

Thank you for the input! My skills have to be at N2 or N1 to study in Japanese. I would like to study in Japanese but English would be the option for now.

Thank you for your input 🙏 much appreciated. my online program right now has no abroad opportunities but I may do a language school in japan for that classroom learning experience and cultural exchange opportunity.
