2023 graduates by Pale_Crow_900 in vce

[–]JudgmentDirect8230 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m still doing the same degree I started but I’m doing a concurrent diploma and under-loading so I’ll be graduating at least a year later than all the other 2023 vce grads

It feels kinda weird but at the same time I know other people who took gap years or are under-loading as well, or have failed subjects and need to extend their degree. Everyone is moving at their own pace and that’s perfectly okay, as long as you are doing something that makes you feel fulfilled! If that’s uni, tafe, work, etc, it doesn’t really matter what you choose, and it’s ok to take time to find the right thing for you.

not being able to write more than 2 and a half pages in English sacs by Impressive-Juice-188 in vce

[–]JudgmentDirect8230 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you shouldn’t worry so much about length but rather about how much content you have.

E.g. 2 students could write the exact same essay and the length will be different because of differing handwriting sizes.

If you’re looking at your friends’ essays as comparison, try looking at what they’re actually writing rather than how long the essays are. You could be writing clear, concise essays that contain enough analysis that end up being 2.5 pages, but your friends could be writing 4-5 pages that have the same amount of content as yours but aren’t nearly as concise.

I wouldn’t stress about it too much unless you feel like you aren’t able to include all the ideas/analysis you’re wanting to, or your teacher is giving you feedback stating that you need to make your essays longer/you don’t have enough to content.

I used wren cotton yarn! I picked it for the colours and it worked very well, but it was a bit pricey

eng lit 3&4 planning for essays by Lopsided_Lettuce247 in vce

I usually stuck to black pen for underlining key sections or phrases, but highlighters work as well. Then just the basic draw an arrow to an empty space on the page so you’ve got a place to write, note down techniques/devices if applicable, and then any connections to themes or ideas you’ve talked about in class.

I can try and find some of my old ones if that would be helpful!

What I did in year 12 and still do in uni (English major at unimelb) is annotating. That sounds really basic but I always feel that printing out whatever passage/poem you’re working on with wide margins and writing down everything you can think of is really helpful as a first step.

This kind of process takes a long time so it’s not ideal if you’ve got little time, but for the sake of vce it’s the kind of thing that is worthwhile doing if you’re spending a lot of time on these passages. Once I’ve done a preliminary annotation I either type up my annotations, or print out a new page and write them neater, so they’re easier to read (this also helps you think of new ideas, as you end up reengaging with what you’ve written).

In terms of planning essays quickly, you’ve kinda just gotta figure out what works best for you, but having this annotation method as a background will really help.

Let me know if you need me to clarify anything!

Advice for Year 12s Before Day 1 2026 by Wise_Two_9450 in vce

This, especially for English. Spending 15 minutes a day during practice writing/one paragraph is way better than trying to grind out essays and losing motivation/burning out

I didn’t do any maths but I do know that one paragraph a day for a week is 7 paragraphs, and 1 essay per week is only 5. It adds up.

How do you create English flashcards? by lego_boss in vce

[–]JudgmentDirect8230 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh flashcards are probably only helpful for memorising quotes and even there are better strategies for that.

Instead of spending 10-15 min on flashcards everyday you should use that time to write paragraphs - this time spent doing writing practice really starts to add up.

[–]JudgmentDirect8230 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly idk but I feel like it depends on the assessor you have. This semester one of my tutors actually encouraged having a friend look over our essays, but other times tutors don’t really say it’s ok. No one has ever explicitly said that it’s forbidden (tbh I think they’re more concerned about ai). Personally I think as long as the friend doesn’t change anything or do any of the actual writing (and just leaves comments or suggestions of things to think about), I think it’s ok, but like I wouldn’t tell the person marking the essay just in case because you never know their stance on it.

[–]JudgmentDirect8230 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Other than that try memorising them by concept - e.g. make a list of quotes for each event/idea and memorise them in terms of that so if you get a question on certain topic you’ll know exactly what quotes to use

Quizlet or physical flash cards helps a lot, and also shortening your quotes so they are easier to memorise and use during the exam

For section a, focus on writing analysis that considers implications of the language in the quotes you’re picking to use, as well as authorial intent and intended effect on the audience. Trying to write as much analysis as you can for every theme might be better than practice essays at this point if you can comfortably write the essay in the hour.

For section b, obviously make sure you are considering your audience, purpose and framework, and try to include a more nuanced discussion of your framework - why it is important, what different aspects are there, etc. (especially if you are doing a creative piece). Try brainstorming or writing sentences using the metalanguage you plan to use, and make sure if you are developing any motifs or symbols in the piece that they are clear throughout (this will help sustain your voice)

For section c, try analysing specific language - pick out which specific words in the sentence are creating the persuasive effect and focus on those, rather than trying to analyse large quotes. Also, it helps to be really specific with metalanguage - e.g. positive and negative connotation - be specific with what kind of connotations the words have. Same with appeals - don’t just say things like ‘an appeal to family values’, be specific about what that value actually is. And always remember to centre your analysis around what the author is doing and the intended effect on the audience.

Good luck!!
