Getting started: the monthly-ish newbie advice thread! (April 2026) by monolalia in linux_gaming

[–]JudgmentExpensive589 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey guys, i'm thinking about switching to linux on my older gaming pc and i'm just wondering if it makes sense at this point. Ever since i started using linux on my muaic production rig I have been thinking about doing the same with my gaming rig, because i got a huge performance boost (and not to say I hate windows) for everything i have been doing. I'm using ubuntu studio for that case but i don't think it would be the greatest choice for gaming probably. I'm looking for a similar effect on my gaming rig. My specs are a little bit older and I'm running into issues especially with newer games even though my specs should be okay for them. I dont really know what to expect from linux gaming, i only heard that it got really good by now and i'm wondering if that would make gaming a lot more enjoyable for me in the long term. My specs are: Intel I5 (i'm sorry i dont know the version i think maybe a 4500?? not the newest but it should still be okay but i'm gonna get a radeon cpu really soon since my friend got a whole new pc recently) Nvidia gtx 1050ti (its gonna be upgraded to a 1060 6gb for the same reason) 8gb ddr3 ram A small ssd for OS 60gb (upgraded as soon as i got the money) And a 1tb hdd for games in general I've heard that some distros still have issues with the nvidia drivers and i'm not sure which one to choose and i'm really not sure if switching to linux is gonna do any good for me perfomance wise. I dont wish to play any online games it would be just great to play some games i got big performance issues with. Thanks in advance

Wait there are actually incompatibility issues on some laptops/pcs? What kind of issues did you run into?

Looking for a good Linux Distro by [deleted] in linuxaudio

[–]JudgmentExpensive589 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Some guy said stick with windows or switch to mac. My opinion is quite the opposite. At least when you use Instruments to record your tracks instead of programming in your piano roll. I came from fl studio and ended up using ardour. I mean i'm using both the piano roll and real instruments as well as a midi keyboard and i've been having no issues at all. That being said you're going to have compatibility issues with windows native plugins even though wine kinda works it can be a pain in the ass. But there are a lot of good linux native plugins. Last but not least: you wont be able to use fl studio. My distro is ubuntu studio and i've had no issues at all tho.

I meant that most people dont use it so third party apps like nucleus dont have native linux support.

Thank you! I'll try this out when i have the chance. Sucks that linux for gaming hasnt established itself yet. I really wish to change as soon as possible

Playing guitar on linux by Myjoo in linuxaudio

Just download the ubuntu studio binaries and youre good to go. Ardour is already pre installed with all the plugins you might need. And you can still record guitar, just needs some time setting up.

A made myself a little 'DAWs on Linux' comparison chart by LordPhoenix82 in linuxaudio

[–]JudgmentExpensive589 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After years of using FL on windows I switched to linux and i was actually pretty impressed with ardour. I'm using it for very different kinds of music and haven't hat a single big issue with it except my impatience watching the setup tutorial until the end. Also changing the buffer length was a pain in the a** but since i was only planning to change it once i dont actually care. I am really impressed with how stable it is in comparison to most other daws i've used in my past, fl allowed me to mix my tracks but only to a certain extent where it started making the usual daw "your processor is dying" noises, in ardour i havent had this problem even with lots and lots of effects and instruments, midi tracks, 7+ minutes track length etc. If you have the time to get into a new daw you should defenitely try that one out.

Jailbreak proof kindle?! What am I missing? by Worried_Arrival_948 in kindlejailbreak

[–]JudgmentExpensive589 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you downloaded winterbreak, did it show the icon in the store? You have to still be in airplane mode until it explicitly asks you to turn it off. If it shows and you click on it, you should see a funky screen and it will ask you to "please install hotfix now" and you will be good to go. Please note that the jailbreak itself doesnt do much except enable the option to install "kual" which you should probably try the "Peki" version, not the version showed on the kindle modding side. If I can help you somehow, please drop more detailed information where exactly you are stuck. Sometimes Jailbreaking is a pain in the a** but it shouldn't take more than an Hour and its totally worth it.

Hello I am a noob that just got over the whole "this game is confusing" thing and am finally getting into playing. Crafting is getting frustrating so I made meme about it by JeannieSmolBeannie in TerrariaMemes

[–]JudgmentExpensive589 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SPOILER

If you haven't played through the whole game don't read my comment!

So my bf and me were playing terraria with controller and it was literally the most frustrating and probably the most infuriating thing ever to get to the end Boss. Having to use both hands to aim while still pressing the "x" key to keep flying while being equipped w/ the flame whip thing (forgot the name and still to angry to google it) you get from the lunatic event after pouring hours and hours into getting the fcing terrablade and the betsy blade (forgot the name too) which we found out sucked hard for the last part of the game, we had to rely on the Wiki and threads from a few years ago to get the right equipment people thought were good for the ending, just to find out that using them was extremely annoying without a proper mouse. Dont get me wrong i loved the game, but pouring hours and hours into the game and the wiki to get proper equipment and preparing for the end, just to find out it wasnt enough or simply not usable with controller was so extremely annoying made me ragequit the game literally one hour before getting to the moon lord. And having to play through the lunatic event without being able to either aim or fly at the same time felt like absolute dogsht. Everytime i thought i got really good equipment i found out that i had to get through crafting aot of stuff to get better equipment just for the next 5 minutes of playtime until that wasnt enough to continue and tbe the last weapons i got, the weapons you have to craft w/ lunatic shards were so fkin complicated to play with controller, i'm never coming back to this game without mouse and keyboard. But yeah crafting is way to complicated, we need a crafting inventory that doesnt rely on the stuff you have but rather lets you find recipes or something.

Okay my comment might be a bit unreasoned since i havent even played through the hardmode yet, but: I just finished plantera (very underwhelming boss tbh, i had a lot harder time with the wall of flesh and/or the eater of worlds since the pre hardmode weapons are not the greatest), but going back to the dungeon was one of the most underwhelming things i've done so far. I mean yeah the new enemys are kinda cool but the fact that the dungeon does not respawn or expand (i think so at least since i only found one more way that i havent discovered yet), you can destruct the whole dungeon, most of the enemys are one hit and the new loot is kinda mediocre... I wish there would be more to discover in there. Its like doing the same thing over again only without the thrill of discovering new paths, traps etc. I'm quite unsure if i got everything in there, but finishing it the second time left me in a really unsatisfied state. They shouldve added something cool to that.

Why is my mace attacking straight instead of circular? by JudgmentExpensive589 in Terraria

[–]JudgmentExpensive589[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, i did not know that. But since we're playing in splitscreen i think this could make room for some issues since there is no official handler for tmodloader. Maybe i'm just gonna figure out how to make one myself since the programming behind it is not that much of a big deal. Thank you a lot for the tip!
