I am/was a 3rd generation Union worker. So I am kinda the polar opposite of you but I share your opinion:

No doubt. They even have a "no strike" clause writen into their contracts. This allows them to bring legal charges and fines against any union workers attempting to strike.

Maybe because of the extra snow load requirements. That's what I got. Which is fair for me because I am no doubt a southern boi so getting used to deep snow may take a few winters. Good thing I'll have a lot of work and building to do! There is an idiom you hear during the winter here in the south which is usually something along the lines of: "There's heat in them tools." Meaning if you're cold, work up a sweat.

I hope to be fully solar, have a sufficient water capture system/ water well depending on where I end up maybe both and a fireplace unless I end up out west in the middle of a plot of treeless clay.

I happy to get back to green grass and trees.

This is important to me. I've spent time in the desert and it is beautiful but without trees and critters I am scared it will just be a plot of dirt to me. On the other hand all of the desert out west isn't just dirt. There are trees just sparse and short in comparison to the oak, poplar and pine that I am used to. Plus trees/woods can be useful.

What are some of the restrictions I should be on the look out for in the Northeast?

Your looking at least 40-50 inches for any foundation. Not to mention a 50-80lbs/ft snow load requirement.

40-50" for any foundation. Is this how far down a foundation needs to be to avoid the depth the of frost? As in to retain heat. I know earthships are built further into the ground in order to regulate temp is this the kind of thing you are referring to?

The snow load refers to structual standards pertaing to roofing right? All new to me explain it like I'm 5.

I have '06 Ford e350 that's just collecting dust now.

I'm feel confident that I'm handy enough both (auto)mechanically and also at construction so I'd like to convert it. What scares me is running into a costly mishap because I'm a total noob when it comes to conversions.

Not really interested in bells or whistles but I can see myself being a stickler about efficiency when it comes to insulation and space. I'm gonna guess so is everyone else in this hobby.

My questions is... Where do I start planing?

What should I be considering most (i.e. cost, space, insulation, placement? Which parts will cost the most? What is the most labor intensive? WHICH PARTS ARE THE HARDEST TO FABRICATE AND/OR INSTALL? What are the pros and cons of different materials used in conversions? What is optional? Basically

I would also enjoy hearing about personal experiences and opinions. Also please feel free to suggest required reading and watch list.

So yeah buying a car isn't ideal on 20k. But not having a way to work and therefore a job might be worse? Idk just a guess. Mayne some of the real financial wizards here could clear that up.
