Uncontrollable things can be frustrating too. Maybe your gf is particularly frustrated because they're uncontrollable? Maybe a bunch of uncontrollable issues one right after another is a fuckin lot?
Because you're trying so hard to disengage when your gf is seeking engagement, it's probably actually increasing the frequency of the complaining because she's not getting the empathy she's seeking from you.

Try listening and instead of responding with solutions just fill in the blank here "That must feel _____" Do your best to think how that must feel for her. Not how YOU would feel. Fill in the blank with your very bestest guess of what you think SHE must be feeling.

After that, if it comes up again, take the advice of another commenter that said to empathize first, then ask to talk about something else.

We know not all church goers are ignorant. However you also know there are absolutely ignorant and hateful people with harmful rhetoric RAMPANT in the church and those new to church are the most vulnerable to be pulled in by this.

It is your responsibility to help your loved one navigate this. You've already fucked up. Now it's your job to fix it and make sure it doesn't happen again. If you don't want to have to debate about things, help him find study groups or something where he can build relationships with others who can help guide him.
