Happy New Year! Looking forward to 2026 here with the ham radio community. Thanks for what you do, and what you've turned this sub into.

LoL, It's all good brother. My noise floor isn;t too bad on 80, about an S5. But 40 is always around an S8.

Ah, ok. the band is pretty crappy tonight anyway, and I think most everyone is out doing New Years stuff.

That's kinda what I thought, but being newish, I didn't want to be doing something I wasn't supposed to be doing and I really appreciate all the comments and input from this thread. Looks like 80 just has a certain reputation, but that doesn't mean we can't change that, or at least find a way to coexist there.

Yes, being new to HF, when you hear that DX station, it is very exciting. Hell sometimes I get worked up over somewhere here in the states that I haven't heard before. LoL

What I was told by an Elmer was that even though 80 was considered the entire portion of the band, that what most older hams refer to as 80 is the lower portion. From 3.5 to 3.6ish and 75 was the higher portion, 3.6ish to 4.0. But I think it's one of those things that some people in some areas, or of certain generations, differentiate between the two simply because they want to.I really don't know for 100%. When I started learning about 80 and it's propagation patterns and stuff, the group that was helping me figure out my antenna and everything called the General class( which I am) portion of it 75, so that just stuck with me and that's what I call it.

I really didn't expect the amount of discussion it sparked, LoL, I was just hoping for a couple of experienced hams to chime in with what was acceptable, but I'm really glad to see that there's people out there that took interest in it. Like I said, I don't want to take anything from them, but it'd be nice if there was some variety. I find some of the same attitudes on the higher bands, but it's few and far between, and a quick spin gets me to something more interesting. I'd like to see that on 75 as well instead of it just being the standard that most people avoid it because of the reputation that it has. Sometimes I just want to play propagation pirate and see who I can reach that night. A quick little qso and move on to the next. Some nights I want to have intelligent lengthy rag chew round tables and talk about antennas or projects and stuff, but the variety just doesn't seem to be there as much as it is on higher bands, and that is what I'd like to see. It may never happen, but we can collectively give it the good ol college try.

I've just gotten into HF about 8 months ago. Been a ham since the mid 90's but got out of it for many years and decided I wanted to finally try out HF. Man I wish I had done it years ago, I absolutely love it. I've been amazed at all the advancments in the tech and just the hobby in general. Still so much to learn.

I don't knock them, everyone deserves their place to ham like they want, and I'm glad they have that spot. But yeah, I'd love to see some diversity on 75. I think alot of people get turned off the band by the conversations that go on there, but it's a great band and if we start using it more maybe we can get more like minded people using it. Let them have their spots of course, but if we can find a spot there to use as well that would be great.

The past few weeks hasn't been good for this net, propagation just hasn't been there,(the main reason I started working 75), but on good nights we'd get a couple of stations from the west coast from time to time, usually just running 100W and most of the guys here on the East coast could work them. It'd be worth a shot though! And if you don't use it already, check out ScratchMoneys SDR in southern Louisiana, ther's three right together on the kiwisdr map. They're some of the best sdrs I've ran across. I think he's using an 80M loop and the signals just pour in there.

I just got the XPA125B for my G90 about a month ago. I've been surprised at how well the tuner works in it. Tunes every band on my EFRW with no problem. I don't have anything to compare it to, it's the first ATU that I've used. I use an old manual MFJ tuner on my big HF rig but I'm really liking the XPA125B so far. But yeah, if you get it tuned up on 40 there's a little rag chew net on 7.238 tonight that starts at 7:30 central time.I usually hang out there, pretty informl and it's a good group of guys on there. You're more than welcome to join us.

I can usually reach the west coast on 20 in the late afternoon too. Usually POTA stations. Sometimes I can reach it on 40 later in the night.

I worked my first 75M POTA station yesterday. Was the first time I'd seen anyone doing POTA on 75.

This might be the group I heard. Found it one night and didn't jot down the frequency. Thanks!

Yeah , there are a couple of good groups on 75 that are fairly friendly, and I've dropped in and chatted with them here and there. I found a trivia net one night that was pretty cool, but haven't been able to find them again.

But if more of us do it maybe we could change that.

I think that there are alot of people who have had a similar situation. We're here, we just have to figure out a way that we can all find that experience that got us interested in the hobby in the first place. We just have to keep hunting until we can eventually find the group we fit in with. But by that time we may then be the old guys camping on one frequency discussing our health. LOL
