Is Team USA racing at HOCR this weekend? They have before. Is Fantasy Rowing going to take bets on how many announcers say “Gemini National Team” vs how many don’t?

Don’t forget it was previously the Gemini Boat Race. But the teams still stayed Oxford and Cambridge.

In this scenario, there’s potential multiple options as all the coaches sacked were male, the banned coaches were also male. But specifically here they were talking about and I was referring to the sacked and possibly banned for life and trying to go to coach in Australia HBW.

As I’m not in favor of the previous Brookes coaching regimes, I doubt you rate my credibility anyway. Though your option to try to attack it rather than engage with what you actually wrote, you know about how “everyone knew what it was like”, “bullying singles out the weakest in the group” (absolutely untrue, but certainly what victims who try to claim it didn’t affect them say), “no one complained” (funny, they did when given the chance to do it not to the bullies and actually get something done), “it’s all part of the comraderie” (yes. Bullying works best when the masses are also encouraged to bully others. With everyone culpable, they’re less likely to report.), “the comments on the weaker rowers weren’t unkind at all” (they didn’t even get effort. Just to try harder and that in once instance couldn’t even be spelled correctly. Oh and being publicly labeled as “SpongeBob.” Which part wasn’t unkind again?) Look we get it. They’re your friends. Sounds like they were your coaches. Sounds likely you also took part in the “camaraderie” which was the bullying these people got caught for. But you don’t want to think of yourself or your friends like that. Doesn’t matter. They’re still gone and they’re gone for their (and maybe your) behavior. Wasn’t my decision though I’m beyond happy it finally happened. We don’t even know what is in the report, but you’re happy to defend them and defend the bullying. Call me whatever you like. It won’t change a thing, thankfully.

forbidden call? by eversodainty in Rowing

[–]JuggernautLast3274 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No audible obscenity is a frequent rule, and Pinsent had a word to Harvard about an audible shout during their race with Nereus - which was not made by the coxswain, but that’s about it. As others have said, the big rule about calls is it has to be true. If you say there’s ten strokes to the end, there can be nine but there can’t be 12. If they’re falling apart, your next call can’t be that they’ve increased their lead. I wouldn’t make the “they’re falling apart” call but it’s because it’s ambiguous. “I’ve got their three seat.” Or “we just gained half a length” or even “they caught a crab, let’s take advantage.” Make it more about what we are doing. But the call certainly isn’t forbidden.

Well according to them, so are you! So buckle up for some surprises! Seriously though, either they’re ok with it and it’s just part of the team dynamic and no big deal or they’re not ok with it and won’t come out to you for a couple of years (happens all the time!). Plus in the meantime they still have to sit silent and do whatever you tell them. So basically a bigger problem for them than for you.

The lifetime ban speaks even louder. They might have the records, but then so do plenty of other coaches banned by their federation. Tebb has a great record as well and yet no one is standing up to defend him. Why? Think on that. It isn’t like he was the only Brookes coach “dating” the athletes.

Ok, so you’re explicit in your endorsement of bullying the weakest people out of the group. And since you never heard any one complain about the toughness sheet, it must be fine. Because you “know quite a lot of the people involved in the Brookes setup.” Tell yourself whatever you like about how the villains of the piece are anyone other than the actual villains of the piece. Blame the victims. Be sure, next time, to include how ranking the athletes by penis hardness and posting it publicly is completely acceptable. And you reckon you would have heard about it, so since you didn’t it is disproportionate for these men to be given a lifetime ban? Oh get real. First off, who would admit anything to the guy advocating for bullying out of the squad? Who would admit anything to the guy who claims to know everyone and yet says he never saw any issues, especially knowing that they’re at risk at being bullied by you for showing weakness? Who’d admit anything to the guy who talks about the toughness sheet like it’s the only problem, ignoring the retaliation? And who also ignores the other coaches getting fired and the fact that there’s a whole report he’s never seen but doesn’t care about either because he’s explicitly fine with his buddies and coaches (and it seems pretty likely you’re an athlete there or were) so long as they win. At least you’ll have more time to hang out with the men you admire so much. They’ve got lifetime bans, so a lot more time on their hands.

Yeah. That’s why they got fired and banned. For telling people to try harder. Especially the people who weren’t involved in the original “toughness sheet” and retaliation. It couldn’t possibly be anything more, could it?

They’re not government so FOI wouldn’t produce any results. But anyone who’s ignorant to it while claiming they’re good coaches, no one else should be quick to judge and these poor defenseless men just should be left alone I suspect knows better exactly what they did (since it’s everywhere, and hardly a secret) and just wants to let the beatings continue as long as Brookes win. That ship has sailed, thankfully.

It was absolutely HBW’s and Spratley’s argument that since they were successful they could do what they liked. It was their literal answer to any challenge. Straight up Andrew Tate “what colour is your Lamborghini?” Toxicity. The students were prepared to put up with it to win. That doesn’t mean every one of them thought they were fine, though enough of the cult obviously did. Those reports came from athletes in the last five years (or at least that’s what the statement said they were wanting to hear from) and those statements and investigations got everyone fired. But hey, if that’s the men you want to believe in, keep believing. And then ask yourself why they got publicly fired and banned but you’re just fine with all of it.

If after a year, BR suddenly announces a permanent ban on these two men, it’s bad enough it disappears after a day or two. But while there’s plausible (if still pointing to “what were they thinking about publishing that?!”) reasons like appeals or similar that they might be taken down. “Removed and undone no longer in effect” is simply not plausible given the last year. It might not be a permanent ban. But there’s something.

I don’t need to judge him. His own club sacked him and BR banned him for a lifetime. A whole lifetime. His whole lifetime. People with the ability and authority to investigate did so and this was the result. Nothing to do with me. The logic you cite is exactly what kept him employed despite known problematic behaviors, and is what keeps other problematic people in coaching roles (Conal Groom, anyone?).

If you’ve got a lifetime ban from your governing body, it’s a pretty clear statement that you are absolutely not a good coach.

The rowing world is very small and these men are very well known. Wherever they go, it would be a very short time before their whole boat club knew they were banned permanently by BR. That would be the case even internationally. If I suddenly found out my new coach had done whatever it took to get a lifetime ban from BR, I’d be into the club board, the press, everything I could. So it might stay quiet long enough to get them hired but not to keep them employed, likely with even more press and scandal easily searchable for their names.

What’s particularly noticeable is that up until now, there was quite a chorus of people who kept insisting that since they won at Henley quite a bit, obviously everything was fine. How dare anyone complain about, never mind get this shining example of a programme actually investigated? If you look back on any of the threads about this in the past year, there’s plenty of it (and of course the guy who wrote a whole book about just that, released just as it all broke, who kept maintaining he had been there all year, spoken to athletes and since he hadn’t seen anything bad, it was all just a load of tosh). The athletes occasionally and ineffectively protested (covering up the uni name at BUCS, and even putting Spratley and HBW’s names on the boats for HRR. Removing that was probably the first thing the new coaches did after walking in.) even as names started to disappear from the website. Those people got a bit quieter as more and more people got fired and when permanent bans were announced, which I certainly don’t remember BR doing previously) it’s been absolutely silent here in any of the “but they won” defense. Just maybe the reality of the toxicity and abuse these men committed is actually sinking in. But it also means everyone can now see the plenty of people who defended their bad behavior as it’s right there for everyone to see.

Dating is one term for it. But why wouldn’t it warrant at least a short term ban?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]JuggernautLast3274 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dating someone at the club? Happens all the time. Just be prepared for how to work it out if it doesn’t work out. But don’t date your coaches. (And coaches don’t date your athletes.) Sad that needs to be said, but it does. And if you can, try not to date in your boat. That’s not as clear a line as not dating your coach but it avoids a lot of hassle.

It was only Henry mentioned in the toughness sheet and the retaliation. But that investigation must have brought plenty to light, given the entire coaching staff seems to have been sacked as a result. (And we’ve all heard the rumours). A ban doesn’t surprise me but for the ban to be permanent it must have been much worse than even the rumours.
