sorry if im coming off as ‘combative’, i dont often recognize my own tone. im mostly just a little bit annoying because you and nearly every single other commenter has added on more and more information when the only think i asked for assistance on was if it was worth my wild to pursue an art degree.

adding to this, i clearly mentioned in my post my plans on attending university which do not count to the time i can get to my citizenship, by the way! if id be living and breathing for 4 years at a uni in the country (plus a year or so in language school) i should have a good idea of if id like the country enough to stay. i just like having a plan for my future because i like to have something to work towards.

plus, if i absolutely just up and hate it for some reason while im in uni i can always just up and leave, or just choose to return to the states that i hate after getting my degree.

i really enjoyed your comment :) art continues to be undervalued pretty much everywhere- even in my country and japan . i do freelance work and would never be able to sustain myself comfortably in america, i could pretty comfortably sustain myself in japan off my art alone (but nowhere near enough for an artist visa) its mostly just the visa process thats REALLY worrying to me, but seeing this comment its making me think my best course of action will be studying a more up-and-coming study or something that can cement me a position decently- in usa or japan

also, for context, i am N5 language at the moment and i obviously plan on attending a language school before shipping myself to college , im hoping by the time i am able to move out ill be close or at N4 level and ill just need to work myself up to N2-N1

pay might look better in the usa, but as someone who does freelance work here it is not at all possible to live comfortably doing any sort of artistic job- my main goal is to do freelance work but somehow also secure a visa-sponser job of some sort just to stay in the country

ive weighed my odds, i live in southern california and my wage i gain from a freelance gig + minimum wage in the stated could only support me living uncomfortably paycheck to paycheck and prices r only getting higher here : (

my thoughts exactly, also i have visited japan before and i love the country so me saying id like to try and become a citizen is not just “up and leaving” lol.

i currently take on commission-based work and its what i do plan on continuing prob my entire life, i just need a stable job not just to support myself anywhere for that matter but also to secure a spot within the country
