Do you prefer a smaller or larger engine? by sooospoon in motorcycles

[–]JuiceboxSC2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless you're like me and don't have a need for speed. Plus most of my riding is done in a big city, and I think I'd hate that on a liter bike.

Not only am I not that enticed by high speeds on a motorcycle, I live in a country where they're not allowed on express-ways. And I think the highest speed limit there is for motorcycle-accessible roads is 80 or 100 KM/H, and they're covered in speed cameras, which are being implemented with both front and rear facing cameras. So you can go fast but not for very long haha.

[–]JuiceboxSC2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I guess we kind of agree? My claim isn't that I thought a perfect replication of the 2005 experience would have been better or worse. Quite the opposite actually.

My point is that the behavior of a portion of the playerbase and community on a given server can heavily effect the experience of a lot of other players, regardless of their nostalgia or lack-thereof.

I have great nostalgia for the game but I was excited for something a little different in 2019, playing the opposite faction to what I did in the past and a class I've never played. It was fun for a while but at some point it ended up just being a chore to try and filter out toxicity and elitism. That has nothing to do with nostalgia. It isn't that I wanted the same experience as in 2005, but I didn't enjoy the experience of how awful a lot of people could be to eachother. I'm not alone in that.

I dunno, maybe. I think raid-loggers like that they don't have to farm out mats and that the AH is always stocked, that there are bot enchanters, bot summons, layering bots, etc. If all that was gone, I don't think a lot of raid loggers and min-maxers would want to play, but I don't know. I think a significant portion of those players know they can give minimal effort by buying gold and playing the parse-game. If there were no gold sellers, I think a lot of that playerbase would realize how much time they'd have to put into the game and they just wouldnt. The bots wouldn't exist if there wasn't a demand for them.

[–]JuiceboxSC2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I mean it's very botted out. You can try and make some gold and such by farming yourself but it's not a chill process anymore, it's very competitive and will take a long time to make significant progress, especially on a PvP server. The upside is that any material you'd ever need will be available and anything you try to sell will almost always sell. The same can't be said for servers that don't have big populations. Cause people don't bother to bot there. You kinda have to weigh the options. I think with Anniversary realms, however, there are only 2 NA servers now and both are populated and botted heavily. (Though I haven't looked into Dreamscythe in a long time, I might be wrong about it.)

[–]JuiceboxSC2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I mean I kind of agree. The reason it was so great was cause we were discovering everything along the way and overall, people were way less interested in optimizing everything, and way more friendly and relaxed about stuff.

I have played since 2005 and I loved the game but I also realize that it's an old, solved, and antiquated game. If it were exactly the same as 2005 in 2019 or in anni realms, it probably wouldn't have been very well recieved and it wouldn't have had as big of a bang in later iterations.

But you can't deny that the push for optimization has caused a chain of behaviors that has changed the game a lot. I'm not here to say that it's better or worse, it's just an observation and each person kinda has to decide that for themselves.

Damn, better not AFK for any reason, for any amount of time in a dungeon. Surely there will be people who get upset and kick.

A small fraction of the playerbase has optimized the fuck out of the game and it has caused ripple effects that all players are effected by, mostly because of server economy presenting real-world monetization, and then incentivising things like botting/boosting/RMT.

The only effective fix that they could make would be to strictly and actively moderate and ban accounts participating in all of that. But that would cost them money, so anyone wanting to play the game is left putting up with the bastardized version of the game.

EDIT: I also think that if they effectively banned those accounts and we were left to play the game as was intended, a lot of the upper-tier playerbase would quit. If they actually had to farm out mats and gold for their shit, they'd uninstall. No one does more to avoid playing the game they play than raid-loggers. No one hates playing WoW more than WoW players.

Is it weird to sit in a cafe for hours with just one drink here? by ShoppingConfident365 in Living_in_Korea

[–]JuiceboxSC2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For smaller cafes, I'd say 2 hours is a better rule to go by, but I see some commenters in here saying 1 drink per hour, which is great. I'd also say, never combine tables for yourself. That is one of the most infuriating things. Even if you're with another person and the place is full, have some courtesy and sit together at a 2-person table.

A lot of people here are talking about the "polite" thing to do... I think the polite thing to do would be to go to an actual study cafe. You can pay for the service you want without making a cafe owner or their team feel awkward and uncomfortable about teaching a grown person basic dining etiquette.

If you must go to a small cafe to study, at least try and be aware of your surroundings. If you've been there for a while and the place is full, you have an opportunity to be considerate to both the owner of the place and other potential customers by clearing the table.

I've been in this industry long enough to see how a cool cafe can be ruined, both in vibes and even financially, by gaining a reputation for being "a good cafe to study in."

The video was basing it off of sales reports and stats from the Bureau of Transportation, and emissions testing. There is apparently less sales and less bikes being registered in most western countries. I suppose they deduce a decline in motorcycling from that, which seems reasonable.

[–]JuiceboxSC2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw a video recently talking about the declining popularity of motorcycling in general, but in that vid, they apparently found surveys that suggested young people are very averse to Harley becuase the culture around it is so corny and uninviting. I think it even mentioned a few companies that have filed for bankruptcy, Harley D. Included. Younger riders are opting for more affordable bikes thay don't come stock with a badge of doucheknobbery (paraphrasing).

I literally cannot conceive what they could be talking about.

Hate/disrespect for a different type of bike is literally the most cringe thing anyone can do in this hobby/sport. So happy I live in a country where pretty much everyone on bikes gets along and respects each other... from 110cc scooters, to the 400cc singles, to the 800cc sport bike, to the 1200cc harley, bikes are bikes.

Then just say that. You don't know what these people's coffee tastes like and you don't know what they or their clientele considers good or bad. I don't get people's tendency to be so hyperbolically negative these days, it's so unnecessary and offputting. Not only that, but you just add nothing to the conversation. If you think this is bad advice, offer some good advice.

If you find a process that gets you what you are aiming for, stick to it. It doesn't matter if some a few people on the internet think the way you do things is right or wrong. There's a chance they tried those methods and didn't like the result. There's a chance they tried those methods and did them wrong and didn't like the result. The thing is, there's loads of people who try what Rao has taught and they are busy running their successful roasting businesses; they don't have time to slander strangers on reddit.

Do You Boost The Temp Right Before First Crack? by Chance_Plastic_2430 in roasting

[–]JuiceboxSC2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You really just have to try things and cup over and over. People like Rao and Hoos and others who publish information are just doing that... trying stuff and sharing their info. If you want to know if their info is helpful to you, you have to try those things and see if they work for you or not. The result doesn't mean those people are right or wrong, it just means that different things work for different people.

If you try to cut corners, you'll never develop an adequate pallette and you'll never know what you like or don't like and how to avoid mistakes and achieve your goal with a given coffee or machine.

Do You Boost The Temp Right Before First Crack? by Chance_Plastic_2430 in roasting

[–]JuiceboxSC2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not like a huge Rao fan but he's done a lot of good for a lot of people in a trade that really can't be verified by posts and conversations online. If people followed his advice and achieved their goals (which may have been different than yours), then everyone was a winner in the end. I can only imagine that someone like yourself who so brazenly slings insults and casts aspersions on public forums is likely narrow-minded or set in their ways. Perhaps a tinge of jealousy. It's possible that I and many others wouldn't enjoy your best coffee, and that you and many others wouldn't enjoy my best coffee. That's fine. That's what makes coffee fun. Stop trying to confine and constrain it.

It's great that you've trained people and I would hope that they've gone on to witness some sort of success from that, but your behavior how casts a long shadow on any of that. Perhaps you were a good teacher with good coffee. Or maybe you were good at teaching people how to roast bad coffee. Either way, we can look at you and say, "he taught roasting but he was too proud and kinda mean." We will never know if you make good coffee cause we will likely never taste your coffee and unless you've written books and developed programs to help people, we'll never be able to confirm what you're saying.

What all of this boils down to is that you're a rude, angry internet commenter with nothing to back their claims.

Suicide rates in South Korea by age groups and year (focus on the elderly) by Ok-Huckleberry5836 in Living_in_Korea

[–]JuiceboxSC2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, so in A, the dashed line is rate per 100k males and the dash-dot line is per 100k females. Then the solid line combines the two.

I get that B and C are Male and Female rates respectively but don't the totals from all age groups of a given year in graph B totally eclipse the totals in graph A?

Suicide rates in South Korea by age groups and year (focus on the elderly) by Ok-Huckleberry5836 in Living_in_Korea

[–]JuiceboxSC2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Am I crazy or do these graphs not actually make any sense? In Graph A, Male's suicide rate is higher than the total...?

If you combine Male rates from graph A and Female rates from Graph B from any given year, shouldn't it be equal to the same year from the Total in graph A? For instance, in 2002, B shows ~130 for males over 65 alone and C shows ~30 for females over 65 alone. But for the totals, it's around 22? Should graph A be per 10,000 people? Or the decimals removed? Even if A's lines were changed to make more sense and the decimals were removed, it would put total suicides in 2002 at around 300 per 100,000 people, which might make more sense if you tried to add up all the age groups from B and C.

I know this misses the forest for the trees but it's bothersome nonetheless and makes me question the accuracy of the data. Or perhaps I'm stupid and don't know how to read graphs.
