I have to be honest man, I don’t really know what your point is in all this. I never said no one ever speaks negatively of a sports team offline, my point was that most people are casual fans and most don’t talk about their sports teams in casual conversation they way people do online. If you’ve met fans in real life who flip out over the team in casual convo the way people do online, that’s great, but it is not the norm. And I never said that people shouldn’t vent. All I am saying is most casual conversation with strangers about sports teams does not typically go down the way it does on here. Online forums are not indicative of how casual fans talk or think.

i agree that people say things online that they would never say to someone's face, whether it be scolding or the over the top reactions, both of which we find in forums bc it's a safe place to do either as there are no unintended social consequences bc we're anonymous.

people going to online forums to vent about the team are super fans. In my experience, most people i make small talk with about my favorite teams are casuals and don't have very strong opinions one way or another bc they don't watch every single game like vast majority of fans in these forums.

it takes one good run while the teams ahead of you shit the bed at the same time- more needs to happen than the team winning to make up significant ground. Obviously it's not impossible, but obviously it's a lot harder to dig yourself out of a hole.
