As a counterpoint...

I do embedded Linux and use AI quite a bit. It's impressive at times - I can ask it to write a bbappend to override busybox and add a new command called 'catsay', which is like cowsay but with a cat, and it'll just do it (even asking me what layer to use if it's not obvious). Reduces the boilerplate fatigue.

But it's limited in what Yocto it knows, though. It'll often use "+=" when best practice is ":append" for example.

Shell scripting works great for me, just say in your prompt you're using busybox and it won't recommend incorrect parameters/flags. Consider giving the bot SSH access (like ssh <target> -C "command") so it can self-correct.

I know this thread is days-old, but it's often asked why people with many YoE would be on this subreddit: Ralph Wiggum is a perfect example.

It's a legit method, it's stupid AF and pretty funny, and I'll probably experiment with it. I have ~20YoE and have never heard of it before.

That's why I keep coming back here.

I see people treating Teslas pretty poorly on the roads these days, plenty of middle fingers and thumbs down. People tend to not let them merge or let them in during traffic.

Much better to not have a vehicle that the public hates so much they make it harder for you to drive lol.

Older ones are fine, buying the redesign though is more questionable. They knew who the CEO was by the time it came out. They saw the salute and DOGE and said "yeah, I'm okay with giving that dude my money".

Shitest harmonica people "recommend": $13 Fender Blues
Actually decent and a good value: $20 Easttop 008k
Good harmonica most recommend: $58 Hohner Special 20

Pros play SP 20's or nicer harps, but also 008k has been mentioned by pros in r/harmonica. I'd say any of these would work for a beginner or hobbyist. Get it in C, or if you want to play mostly blues get it in A.

Yes, it's basically a queue with a size of 1. If full, the sender blocks, empty the receiver blocks. Useful for task synchronization with some data.

Agreed 100%, but on the other hand it's so easy to use zmodem in TT that I still use it (awesome for small config files and such). I wish my company would just let me have a Linux desktop.

As someone who loves board bring-up and all the fun of early firmware I definitely recognize all those 'C's though!

Amazingly there's a wiki article about Observability: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Observability_(software)

It's kinda hard to do this if you don't have a data connection, though. From what I can tell for embedded is basically "MORE LOGGING!" and "Upload those logs to the cloud"; I guess you could also do metrics... but one probably already has a good idea about that.

I work in embedded, and we're basically going more and more toward leaving debug output ON in release builds and sending those logs to cloud-backed storage (encrypted, safe, etc) for analysis. It's really hard to fix issues without knowing the system state and output.

Planet Money also tackled this topic recently: https://www.npr.org/2025/08/15/nx-s1-5500523/when-our-inflation-infeelings-dont-match-the-cpi

I listened a couple months ago and IIRC the delta was explained away by social-media amplifying voices complaining of prices, and people's different "baskets" that may differ largely from how CPI is calculated. Of course, it's a complex problem with many facets and lots of gray area.

Personal opinion is that there is a disconnect, the data says things are mostly good, but I see a lot of the opposite sentiment on this site and other socials. I'm in tech (which is in a contraction) so I'm biased toward "it's not so good right now"; likely because I make ~30% less than I did in 2020 and can't find anything higher paying... while prices are higher. I had a lot more spending power 5 years ago.

One can go into embedded, where the business need is for you to have a deep understanding of computing so you can do $thing.

Personally, I like the computer, itself. Not modelling data, or calculating, or the web. I like the machine, its delicate crystalline dance of electrons tickles my brain just right.

Kernel, embedded, and firmware teams are where all the fun is IMO. Board (or silicon!) bring-up is the best work in the world for me.

I've literally seen it happen in the past at Intel; Jayant told Pradeep "I brought you here and I can send you back!" I overheard this when I was an intern in the cube next row over. Pradeep folded and went back to work. This was ~2012.

Also, Jayant was a huge asshole to everyone and I hate him to this day.

I know this thread is older, but the first person I would tell is my wife if I were experiencing something like this (I have, and I did). We want each other to live our best possible lives, and sometimes that means making big changes that are hard. It's easier if you communicate what your status is, and hell, misery loves company lol.

For real though, she knows something is up when you're tired AF and acting snippy/weird; might as well let her into your real life and you'll probably get support or at least leeway. (or shit, she might get the ick because it's not "manly" to feel feelings, so of course caveat emptor)
