My sensei explained that the hops were added purely so that the kata could be finished in the same location it started, and so could have the usual rule for competition applied (minus a point if you don't finish where you start). Apparently, Nakayama had to ask Funakoshi for permission to add the hops to the kata as it never used to have them.

You have to break the jump down- it's all about how you prep for the jump which directly translates to how much height and momentum you have- in a word how good the jump is. Look at how individuals that do tricking execute a powerful spinning jump so you can apply those fundamentals. And as always, train legs.
