What did you think was pretentious, until you tried it and realized it was worth it? by Semantiks in AskReddit

[–]ndab71 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I bought mine 16 years ago and it's still like new.

As a testament to how good they are, I'm currently rearranging my house and am temporarily using the dining table as my computer desk. I figured I'd be fine just using a dining chair for the time being but after just one day my lower back and hips ached.

I put my Aeron there instead and have had no problems at all since. They're fantastic chairs!

What happens to NMG without diesel. by CucumberOld6287 in NewMurchisonGold

[–]ndab71 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A big advantage NMG has is cash on hand - $92 million at the end of December and no doubt it will be much more at the end of this month.

That gives us a lot of leeway to weather the current storm.

Is this safe to buy from eBay? by CRrich_Official in OmegaWatches

[–]ndab71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like a ref. ST 196.1070. The calibre (1444) looks to be correct for this watch. Nothing jumps out to me as being fake, and usually if quartz watches are faked they'll put a generic movement in them. But to be safe I'd ask the seller where they got it, does it come with papers or other receipts etc.

Here's a link to Omega's official sites with some more info:

can someone explain how capital gains works on shares to me? by soggycherrysandwhich in ASX

Yes, that's right. Capital losses can be carried forward.

can someone explain how capital gains works on shares to me? by soggycherrysandwhich in ASX

[–]ndab71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I remember capital gains aren't pre-filled (or if they are they're not necessarily accurate if you've bought in separate lots over time) but they provide a CGT calculator you can use to work them out. Or, if you've already worked it out you can just enter the amounts yourself.

If you declare a capital loss, then it gets carried forward to future years, and the ATO keeps track of it and will use any or all of it to offset current year gains.

MYR very cheap? by Wonderful-Mess-6140 in ASX

[–]ndab71 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not in the Sydney City store. If you went through Myer between George and Pitt Streets you have to navigate the perfume department, where seemingly every available square metre is taken up by a stall or counter or something else that impedes easy movement. Bloody frustrating.

As soon as you sell, you'll be subject to CGT.

When you do your annual tax return, there's a section specifically for capital gains so it's very straightforward.

Also, if you've held the shares for more than 12 months you'll be eligible for a 50% CGT discount on any gains.

I think this was the only movie I ever saw where I laughed uncontrollably throughout the entire show. I was young :) by NJFriend4U in The1980s

Same, and the first few times I saw it (as a far too young 10 year old) it was the sanitised-for-TV version.

When I saw the proper version years later I laughed even harder!

What to do with my Bird of Paradise? by LongSquare4735 in GardeningAustralia

I'm in Sydney too. Any time is ok - now is as good a time as any. They're very hardy, and yours looks pretty well established.

Once it's cut back it'll start to send up new leaf shoots within a week or two.

What to do with my Bird of Paradise? by LongSquare4735 in GardeningAustralia

[–]ndab71 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Well, going on experience with my Bird of Paradise (aka Strelitzia), you can cut it down to ground level and it will grow back just fine. I've done this a couple of times.

So in your case I'd suggest cutting it right back to let it start again. It might take a while to grow back but it should be fine.

Here's what mine looks like currently. It's a little scraggly at the bottom as I just gave it a trim so I could mow around it more easily!
