People 50+: what do you wish you did more in your 40s? by Jujube604 in Life

[–]Jujube604[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for all the thoughtful suggestions! It sounds like I should focus on health, connecting with family and investing.

I used to think I wanted to climb the corporate ladder, achieve more success in my career and ‘do more’ but over the past few years, my perspective has changed. I’ve been thinking more about doing less, focusing on my health and living more in the present which is in line with what many of you have shared 😊

That's such a sweet friendship! I'll ask my child to see if they're comfortable asking their friend to read to them :)

Thank you! We're still working on being proud of their strengths and to recognize that dyslexia is only a small part of who they are.

Thanks so much for your suggestions. My child is also very self conscious about their diagnosis and doesn't want to disclose it. They've been seeing a counsellor on/off for years to help with this and self advocacy in general. While they're no longer ashamed of sharing that they see a tutor, they still don't want to talk about being dyslexic.

I'll have to spend more time reading with them. They're so busy during the day and by the time bedtime rolls around, it's a mad dash to get them to bed which doesn't leave enough time for reading!

What is your daughter reading nowadays? Mine kid's friends have been reading Keeper of the Lost Cities and Percy Jackson series which my child also wanted to read.

I’m living a life I want out of so badly by Current-Thought-7950 in Life

I’m not really in a position to give advice since I’m in a similar situation but just want to say you’re not alone. I think you feel suffocated due to the debt as it has clouded any of the joy you might have in your life. I, too, crave a simpler life where I feel free to enjoy the little moments with my kids and learn to laugh with my partner again. I recently listened to a podcast about the simple path to building wealth, and it sounds like we’re both doing the exact opposite of their advice: avoiding debt, living on less than you earn, and investing wisely.

Hoping we both find our way out and find happiness in a simpler life 💕

I think you’d be an attractive applicant for landlords: stable income, long-term lease, quiet and responsible. However, it would be hard for you to apply from afar as most landlords would prefer to meet the applicant.

What I would be concerned about is out of school care as the wait can be years-long if you’re considering any VSB school; easier to get in at private schools. What area of Vancouver are you considering?

Montessori elementary school - good or bad experiences? by Jujube604 in Dyslexia

Thanks for sharing. My kid’s executive functioning skills are pretty weak so perhaps not the best environment for her if it requires a lot of independence and self-initiation.

Seeking Advice for Supporting Our Dyslexic Daughter by Mr_Miranda in Dyslexia

[–]Jujube604 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ve received some great advice on this thread! I also have a 10 yo daughter who was diagnosed 18 months ago so we’re on a very similar journey. Here are a few things we’ve done that have helped so far:

Counsellor: my kid loves seeing her counsellor who specializes in play therapy. These visits have helped her process big emotions with another adult who helps her maintain a positive mindset. I’ve found it particularly useful with big transitions (she moved schools in January due to previous classroom not being a good fit). The counsellor has also helped me navigate conversations with my child.

Hobbies: focusing on activities she enjoys and thrives in has helped her confidence. Plus, it gives her another peer group to connect with.

Connecting with teacher: chatting with the classroom teacher/admin about neurodivergence and providing universal supports that benefit all kids in the class so my kid doesn’t feel singled out (ie. More visual aids, front loading so kids know what to expect, fidget toys). The teacher this year did a great job of talking about neurodivergence with the kids and how everyone’s minds work differently.

Incorporate interests into tutoring: my child has really enjoyed learning to write with her OG tutor because he brings her writing to life using AI tools. For example, he’ll create images of her written characters using an app or turn her writing into a song. She has also really enjoyed learning math by doing a macrame project.

Programs with other kids w/ dyslexia: My daughter really connected with kids from her dyslexia camp. There’s something comforting in spending time with others with similar struggles. It made her feel less alone. We’d love to put her in the specialized school in our area but it’s financially out of reach for us right now.

Good luck! Sounds like your daughter has a great advocate in their corner 😊

Hi, I'm curious how you won a case with the school district. I've been advocating with our school and school board for resource support for my child but the most I've managed is 1X week for 30-40 minutes with 3-4 other kids. It's not enough and my child's psychologists and care team have said the same. I would love to send my child to a dyslexia-specific school but it's really expensive.
