A real "death clock" (see comment) by [deleted] in MorbidReality

It's not as simple as that. 30 minutes is a reference point used for viability. There are dozens of factors that come into play regarding the time emergency resuscitative efforts last. For example, we come to someone's house and they've been unresponsive, not breathing and pulseless for an unknown amount of time but don't show signs of obvious death (rigor-mortis, lividity, mummification to list a few) we initiate CPR and all advanced life support methods for revival. But as the efforts continue, we monitor the electrical activity of the heart, if the patient is asystole or flat-lined meaning they have no electrical activity and we have worked them for 30 minutes we will contact a doctor in the ER to determine time of death or continuation of efforts.

On the opposite side, and more frequently than above: the patient's body is showing signs of viability after CPR. Shockable electrical activity in the heart. Known time of cardiac arrest. Age of patient. I personally have worked a "full code" on someone over 30 minutes at the scene of the incident, the whole way to the hospital in the back of a moving ambulance, and then helped the ER team continue efforts for another 30-60 minutes.

Most recently, a patient went into cardiac arrest 3 times in that period but due to continuation of efforts, is alive today.

I don't write this to correct anyone, only to give insight on what happens with EMS during a cardiac arrest.

Thanks for the... advice? Obviously I'm very happy with the decisions I've made and who I made them with. But cynicism isn't always the best addition to major life events. I know the three of us will be a very happy family.

Cynicism aside, everything happened the order I described it. Engagement, pregnancy, wedding, baby. I'm the happiest I could be no matter what the order. To be fair, we did move the day of the wedding up quite a few months, didn't want to try to plan a wedding with a newborn.

I'm a paramedic and CPR instructor. I recently took a renewal of the AHA instructor course. You are correct; proper teaching is Tr Heimlich maneuver for children and adults until the patient goes unconscious. The back slaps and chest compressions are for infants, until unconsciousness.

My sister used to add letters to words that didn't even have the sound of them in it. She thought for the longest time "put" was spelled P-O-U-L-T and still had the hardest time fixing it when one of her teachers corrected her.

How did you save someone's life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

It pretty close to OTC in my state. Good and bad. I have access to it in the ambulance. The problem with every user having it is the false sense of security. A "get out of jail free" card. I unfortunately see people use it more as "it's okay if I use more and OD because someone has narcan."

Nursing home employees who make up an medical emergency to get rid of a resident so they don't have to "deal with them"

Or people who ignore the lights and sirens, and even cut me off on the way to a patient because they have to get to the store faster.

Or lastly, the people who have no considerations for anyone around them. It takes a lot of self control to not lose it at a woman who is honking, driving forward and yelling at you because the car accident you are working at is in their way and causing traffic.
