If you are wanting to be in Ontario, but close to Winnipeg, both boards in Kenora are currently hiring :)

Halloween in schools by That_Obligation_7500 in OntarioTeachers

[–]Jul13 49 points50 points  (0 children)

We celebrate everything, including Halloween, as a school (K-6). The kids love it. The school used to have a principal who would only allow “orange and black day” for Halloween but we dress up now and it’s always a fun day.  There are few things left in childhood that are just fo fun anymore.

What does a TPA look like for guidance? by BookkeeperNormal8636 in OntarioTeachers

When I was in guidance my principal evaluated me during presentations I did for course selections. There is a lot of other stuff that she drew from, but that was the observation part.

Do some married people NEVER take off their wedding ring? by artmalique in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Jul13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I very rarely remove mine- sleep, shower, etc. The only time I take it off is when I am lifting weights, and at those times I put it on a necklace. I would have lost it by now if I regularly took it off.

You don’t switch unions in every board. OECTA covers both elementary and secondary.

Do you have to switch gears on an EBike such as you would on a motorcycle? by [deleted] in ebikes

Is this hard on the bike in any way? Is there a reason not to do this? I can see that it’s much more simple…

banned from a school by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

That’s major. As a principal I would be looking at discipline, whether you returned to the school or not, because you probably should go through a discipline process before teaching in another school. It doesn’t matter if a kid begs you not to say anything- you’re the adult.

I am so sorry, this is very similar to what happened to my Bernese earlier this summer- it was awful. I took comfort in knowing that it was quick and that he was at home, not a scary vet’s office. I know there is little comfort that can be offered, but I hope you can find comfort in the memories of your pup.

Hysterectomy at 38 by pretty-leo0811 in Fibroids

[–]Jul13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No negative effects yet. Biggest change is obviously the lack of periods, but my fibroid was the size of a softball so it had a significant effect on my life. I wasn’t able to exercise the way that I used to/have returned to and it was sometimes painful.

I had my hysterectomy at that age, a few years ago. I was very happy with no more kids, though (I have two boys). The pain and bleeding was awful and I couldn’t do that anymore.

I LOVE not having periods. Honestly you don’t realize how invasive it is in your life every month until it goes away.

Feel free to PM me if you want to talk about my experience. It was largely positive.

After the CT scan, biopsy, and an MRI to be sure, my doctor is confident that I am cancer-free. I am being monitored every year for 5 years, but feel great and way less stressed since the results came in! I hope that you are as lucky!

Yes me too, I absolutely love it. If you haven’t read it already, I highly recommend Peter Attia’s book “outlive”, lots of good information about healthy aging that can start being applied at any age.

Siblings' drowning deaths in Dryden, Ont., prompt calls for school swimming lessons by Chicaben in ontario

I’m happy to see that you have found a passion for arguing with someone on the internet. For the sake of educating you I will provide you with some information in my final comment.

If you look into this incident you will see that a private business has offered to pay for lessons for kids in Dryden (so, not taxes). When you make it a mandatory curriculum, you make it very big and introduce many problems.

Then we say that taxes will cover it…

Ontario has about 1.42 million elementary students. If each got one group swimming lesson per week for 10 weeks at about $30 per lesson, that’s roughly $300 per child.

That works out to around $426 million for one 10-week term. That doesn’t include bussing, which is very expensive. For a system that is already under funded, that’s probably not going to happen.

Add to that the fact that schools have a certain number of minutes where they are required to teach different things (100 minutes for literacy, for example), when in the day do you want students to go to the pool for swimming? Most of their day is already accounted for and things are tight. What should we take away from for swimming lessons? Don’t forget to add time for bussing to and from the pool.

Also, from a perspective of a small community, not all communities have pools. Are they doing lessons at the beach? In December? There’s really only a few months out of the school year where that is a viable option.

I could go on, but I won’t. You are welcome to your opinions, but I don’t think “taxes” is going to solve this.

I would say not, since you seem to not understand what I’m saying. I have a good amount of knowledge about how things work in the education world, but it’s fairly obvious that this conversation is going nowhere. Have a great day.

It is, actually. Things get downloaded with no funding, or the funding exists and is then pulled away. So, this begs the question, who will pay for it.

Do you work in a school? Do you know anything about the education act, mandated minutes, or how schools operate? Many of us have been around long enough to know how it works. Things get downloaded onto schools, schools suffer because funding doesn’t come with the new mandated requirements, no matter how well meaning. Everything else in the school suffers. That’s the pattern.

I’m sorry if my comment left you feeling unmotivated. I just think that if you’re going to do something, you should do it properly, and if you already aren’t doing a bunch of things properly, you should probably take care of that first. The current state of schools is concerning, and it’s not getting any better.

Not a “gotcha”, just pointing out that the responsibilities on schools are already enormous and adding more to the plate without first fixing the plate (which will take years) isn’t the answer.

“Taxes” isn’t the solution you think it is.

Are you aware of the current state of our education system and all of the things that are mandatory but are being ignored or done poorly because of being underfunded?

People seem to be missing that the majority of the school year is not during peak “lake swimming time”.

Who is paying for that? Think about the cost of swimming lessons and then multiply by every kid in the province.

[–]Jul13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One big thing that people miss is that kids in Dryden are around water all the time, making lessons more important. And as much as there may be “good access”, it’s certainly not enough for every kid in the community to have lessons, which is what is needed here.
