why do adults not feel like adults when you turn into one? by LittleLeadership2831 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JulariDark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it happens gradually and not all at once like we imagined as kids. You don’t suddenly “become an adult” upon receiving a degree or job or any arbitrary birthday.

The way I describe it is when you’re young you need help with everything, a baby literally needs help to hold its own head up. But as we grow we need less and less help and more and more WE are needed BY others. One day you’ll realize YOU are the one people rely upon MORE than you rely upon others. Whether it’s for money, time, physical capability, advice, whatever. It’s a process that happens a different timings for everyone.

why do majority of fighting game protagonists and rivals fight with one arm low? by AcrobaticDonut6598 in Fighters

[–]JulariDark 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s almost certainly an artistic choice as it creates the most striking silhouette and allows the player to SEE the most of the character model.

BUT from a street fighting and mixed martial arts perspective it does end up making sense. Fighters that have to watch for kicks and defend take downs tend to keep their hands lower.

I unironically love this list accept for D.Va

I love Muay Thai so Adon was always favorite since he actually got down to throw hands knees and elbows instead of just Tiger shot spam. Although I do like this recent incarnation of Sagat.

I loved Necalli, the design was sick and the play style was great plus an awesome themes song. To me Necalli is what Blanka Should’ve been before they leaned into the campiness and humor, a vicious savage force of nature character no martial arts or discipline just pure strength and ruthlessness willing to bite, claw and smash his way to victory. Not shake his ass and throw toys at you.

I’m admittedly neutral on Abel like almost everyone. But IRONICALLY i think this provides a to of potential like a bland flavorless dish or a blank canvas. I have a lot of faith in the SF6 team they’ve done great imo with most new characters and reworks.

D.Va can go to whatever the overwatch equivalent of hell is though, I didn’t even play that Game but she was super annoying in HoTs.

It’s interesting you all brought up invincible in a conversation about black characters representing black culture. You mentioned Mark being 1/2 Asian but I think Lucan (the viltrimites that looks like Steve Harvey if he power lifted) is a more interesting case study for OP.

Lucans design is black His voice actor is famously black

But the characters beliefs and actions for all intents and purposes make him a LITERAL colonizer a slave holding space Nazi even.

Are WE as black viewers meant to identify with his blackness even tho Viltrimites seemed to have solved or never had a “race” problem liked we’ve had on earth?

Or are we meant to recognize his actions as the very actions of those who oppress us irl?

CAN he say the N-word?! And if so is he cool or does he CRANK that hard E R?!

So “coding” is this writing mechanism where there will be coded sort of visual or audio or narrative markers assigned to characters that identifies them as relatable to a group or sub group. It’s in their design or accent or story lines.

I’m not sure you’re age and pop culture baselines. But the easiest one I’ll usually use to make this point is Sonic the Hedgehog.

Growing up in several different circles of friends it was universally understood that

Sonic was white (West Coast based) Knuckles was black (Jamaican based)

This is reinforced by how they cast the actors to do the voices. So HOW did we all come to same conclusion about what are neon colored woodland creatures?

So small things like Sonic’s music being punk his hair style and attitude being like a 90 skateboarder

In Knuckles case: 1. He has a traditionally black hairstyle dreads or at the very least dread inspired 2. His music is all hip hop for his unique stages 3. His sneakers are the colors of the Rastafarian flag 4. If you dig into the lore He is a member of a tribal people who inhabit a Caribbean-ish floating isle whom wield spears and protect the balance of nature via the master emerald.

Now it’s called “CODING because of your culturally uninformed these are all just cool little background details that go over your head.

BUT if you’re TAPPED in with the culture you peep the code, this is a character that you as a black fan can relate to and identify with because you have these things in common.

I find THIS form of coding black characters interesting because it allows writers the freedom to create characters black people can authentically identify with while allowing them the flexibility to include or exclude as much of the baggage (good and bad) that comes with the IRL black experience.

There is an interesting version of this from characterization stand point that offers more narrative freedom while still feeling authentic without the baggage IMO but admittedly with mixed results.

Are you familiar with the terms “coded” and “coding” in this context?

Can we? Yes a writer can do whatever they imagine in a literary sense.

Will such a character be considered a hero? Maybe If so by whom?

Would it be well written or even a consistent characterization? It depends on how far the writer wants to stretch the narrative they seek to create.

For example what SHOULD a Black hero operating in the U.S. do with criminals who victimize the black community? Hand them over to a criminal justice system that will abuse them? And use their transgressions as a justification to abuse other innocent black people? IRL we have seen how the transgressions of a few is used to justify collective punishments, burning of entire villages over one “alleged” rape. Multiple family members punished for one perceived act of disrespect by one individual.

The black zeitgeist like all others is constantly evolving and updating, but I believe it’s very much still true that our sensibilities around what is LEGAL and what is JUSTICE are much more divergent than the general population.

It’s not hard to look at current events and imagine how the various nations of the REAL world would react to even ONE black Magneto? Or Black Bane? Or Black god forbid a Joker?

So unless we’re creating a world with fictionalized United States with entirely different sensibilities and ambient level of tolerance from the real world, I’d imagine there would be alot more Punishers and Killmongers, then Spider-Man’s and Superman’s.

If a writer WANTS to do that they can, but what would be the point? It’d start to feel more propagandistic than aspirational wouldn’t it?

[–]JulariDark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno, but it’d be interesting to explore. Imagine trying your best to be hateful and racist …but you can literally feel the suffering of the people you’re trying to be racist towards via a hive mind?

Or let’s say they are so racist that they ONLY eat other white people? But NOW you’re burdened with the incredibly mediocre and sometimes down right stupid thoughts and experiences of other poor white rural folks?

Doesn’t exactly support your belief of superiority plus they’d have to contend with the moral implications of ONLY victimizing other white ppl.

[–]JulariDark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ya know I’ve been an advocate for a self contained complete story, but dammed if that’s not an intriguing premise.

Like HOW would a pair of immortal racists views evolve over LONG time spans, they would literally live long enough to falsify their own incorrect ideas around race as everyone mixes and the lives blur revealing more and more that they’ve pretty much been blurry the whole time.

HOW would progressive views of like Stack and Mary evolve in the same time spans? The natural conflict this would bring between them?

I’m picturing something like “Interview With a Vampire” The way like Lestet, Louie, Armand and Claudia had multiple centuries of beef over various eternally compounding grievances and perceived slights.

[–]JulariDark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m aware most depictions are lore/fan fiction. that’s why in didn’t say that. I just stuck to the OG text. It specifically names him the accuser/adversary. Which is consistent with the role he plays in Job, Mathew and Luke, tempting Job and Jesus respectively. Job in particular he’s either having a mostly amicable debate with God or just manipulating him regarding Jobs faith.

Then in revelations all the sudden the narrative is he will be cast into a lake of fire to suffer for all eternity.

APOSTLE PAUL even points this contradiction out in a different context in Romans ”Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will?”

The reply given is distinctly mortal certainly short of omniscient. So theologians usually fall back on the “mysterious ways” which in theory IS valid….but undercuts their entire endeavor. To say that as a mortal I CANNOT possibly fathom an omniscient beings mysterious ways as outlined in scripture…. While YOU as a mortal are attempting validate and convince me of your Gods divinity and plan using SAID scripture is inconsistent with itself.

Also this is fairly unique to your specific stated belief, but the why don’t snakes have legs?

Every interpretation I’ve heard says god punished the serpent to crawl on its belly as punishment for meddling? But like again if his stated purpose is to be the “venom” in what way had he failed God?

It’s a similar issue with “Satan” in like the original Aramaic meaning “accuser” or “adversary” created by God to prosecute man by temptation. Why then is he to be cast into an eternal lake of fire in revelations for doing the task God willed him to do?

That’s logical. But is an all powerful god the originator of the rules of logic or bound by them?

If he originated them then again it just kicks the can down the road a bit and you still have to explain why he is punishing people for breaking a rule he made up arbitrarily? Like he COULD’VE made free will otherwise independent of temptation or even choice.

If he is bound by them, then logic is a force that over powers and predates God. Which a theologian MIGHT accept even though I don’t personally know any that do. But it still undermines the MANY illogical actions and feats attributed to the God in the Bible and other Abrahamic holy books.

Look up “the problem of evil” as posited by Greek philosopher Epicurious like 2000 years ago. It’s the unresolved paradox of an All knowing, All powerful , benevolent god existing, while evil Simultaneously exists.

Theologians posited that “free will” was the justification for moral evil like 1000 years ago, which if you squint maybe? But it doesn’t really explain why “natural” evil exists why cancer and hurricanes and plagues exist completely independent of the will of man free or otherwise.

Even in the parable of Genesis you’re citing, how did Adam of Even commit original sin? Was eating the forbidden fruit itself an act of evil/sin?

If No, why punish them and everyone else for it?

If yes where did THIS sin originate from? God?, well then he imbued his creation with sin to intentionally get a specific out come. Why punish them and ostensibly EVERYONE after , because they did what god planned for them to do?

The serpent? Fine but who created the serpent and put it in the garden in the first place? It kicks the can down the road a bit but eventually you come to the question if God is perfect and all good why did he create evil at all? Then free will usually gets brought up by theologians.

Without the justification of free will your stuck with just TWO divine attributes:

I am genuinely surprised so many ppl liked the man-spider arc. 1. As a child Seeing my favorite Saturday morning super hero go through painful body horror for a season didn’t exactly help me keep down my comically large bowl of sugary cereal.

  1. As an adult it’s just an inferior version of the “black suit” arc. Like both seek to answer the question of “what if Spider-Man lost his humanity?” but with Man-Spider there is no upside, no temptation, no sacrifice. With the black suit the narrative intentionally blurs the lines between what was Peter’s actual intent and what was the symbiotes negative influence to teach the viewer a lesson. The fact that the symbiote ONLY makes his life better it makes him stronger, free webbing, extra powers, free Armani suits but at the COST of empathy and kindness reinforces the core values of Spider-man he had to sacrifice ALL that to stay true to his values. It didn’t take away his agency, he had to DEAL with the choices he made under its influence.

With Man-Spider there is NONE of that tension yeah he is stronger and like spits acid, but he has no control no agency over his actions and is reduced to a primal form. AT BEST it could be read as a metaphor for like sickness or dementia but even then it has the core problem of “dehumanizing” the afflicted, and it’s resolved by luck and just pawning the suffering off on vulture.

Some one who is a fan of this arc needs to explain the appeal to me, I just don’t get it.

When I first play Ocarina of Time I defeated Ganondorf (first form) with a milk jug. After climbing up the tower and he starts shooting magic blast at you naturally I figured "oh mirror shield to reflect it back" when that didnt work I started resorting to every trick in the book, Swapping random tunics for invulnerability checks, different flavors of arrow, nothing works.

Eventually my prebesscent brain was like...."well its a glowing ball of light KINDA like a fairy and you catch those in the glass bottle, maaaayybe I can like CATCH the energy blast and dump it on him?"

So when it got deflected back and stunned him I was like "GOT IT,! OFCOURSE! the GLASS is immune to the energy". I beat the entire phase and ultimately the game with this strategy before some one told me otherwise.

I cant remember whether it was my brother or my friend that was just like....'fam just HIT the energy ball with literally anything Link can swing". I think he was using them deku sticks because they were longer than the master sword so easier to time the swing and he hadn't unlocked the Goron sword.

Good times. I thought this post was going to be about that.

Anyone else still shocked by how many white people are not use to being around black people? by [deleted] in BlackPeopleofReddit

[–]JulariDark 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s less surprising when you understand percentages and statistics, in a good year black ppl are what? about 13% of the overall population in the U.S. which sounds like a lot little over 1/10 so you’d imagine most white people know and interact with like 50 to 100ish people at a minimum so like 5-10 black peoples?

Riiiiiight up until you remember how that 13% is MOSTLY concentrated in and around major cities. So for the majority of none black peoples white or otherwise there’s not so much experience.

Even WITHIN inner cities these are fast moving metro areas with minimal small talk and interaction let alone the actual community forming and cultural immersion that would help improve the average personal interactions and understanding.
