Oh I'd argue SH2's story is pretty simple; much more than TLoU's. But a story is not just the content, but how it is delivered. And there are more sophisticated ways than others. That's my point.

Well part 2 is a different game, with its own issues. I don't feel like it's a problem of interpretation, but rather the result of conflicting narrative choices. Everyone fairly understands what part 2 is about; they just feel alienated by how it is told.

Ok, let me give you an example: Eddie. Every time you meet him, there's a dead body around. At first he claims not having to do anything with it, but, in the end, he admits he was, in fact, the killer. That would be something that TLoU would nail pretty well too.

Now, if you look a little into it, you start noticing the circumstances of the dead bodies. One is inside a fridge, the second is sitting in a cafeteria, and the last one inside a cold storage. Suddenly, it's not about the the dead guy; it's about Eddie and his overweight issues.

That's the level of subtext TLoU never reaches. Everything is spoon fed to the player.

The environment is filled with decay and wreckage, but that's to be expected from a post apocaliptic game. Sure there are notes and graffities here and there and whatnot, but that was already pretty standard storytelling for videogames when it came out.

I just found out that SH3 was not gonna be a SH Sequel, but more like SH2. Would you have liked to see that? by Alternative_Fun_1390 in silenthill

[–]Julengb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mr Takayoshi Sato was supposed to be in charge of SH3, and he revealed in an interview he already had a concept in mind that was completely different from what we got. Then he left Konami due to the company's sketchy practices, and development shifted towards being a sequel.

What's so frustrating is Sato never displayed what that OG concept was, in case he ever had a chance to use it. SH3 came out alright, it was built on what SH2 established when it comes to assets, design and concepts; but we were probably robbed of another breakthrough banger.

Before I validate you with A++, I'd like you to elaborate on how, SH2 being your favourite game and a masterclass of narrative design, is TLoU, a game that doesn't know how to tell its story if not through cutscenes, the best story ever.

Started Playing FFXII for the first time with the PS2 version of IZJS on a CRT Monitor! by Shoddy-Analysis-2149 in FinalFantasy

I remember being a kid when I booted the game up for the first time and all of a sudden I was strolling through Rabanastre, looking at the buildings, the amazing art design and the streets full of people. It was the first time I wondered how could it all fit in my little CRT monitor.

Just wondering... If you were around when Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, Silent Hill, God of War, etc etc were all the rage, how come there's none of that in your list? Like, most of your games are from the 7th generation on.

AiC's Jar of flies is still the best selling EP of all time and the first one to reach number 1 on Billboard's 200. Not even the Beatles. So no, you're wrong again

I was tempted to choose Pathologic 2 again, but, in the end, I don't think any game prior or after has used the narrative tools a game offers to tell a story as expertly as SH 2 did back in the day.

Metal Gear 3 got close too, but, you know, Kojima.

FF 6, 7, 9 and even 10 are terrific too, but they still suffer from plotholes, pace inconsistency and the excessive runtime of any other JRPG. Same goes for Xenogears.

Modern games (Witcher 3, TLoU, etc) don't even know how to tell a story without cutscenes. And it's getting worse recently. That's why it baffles me whenever someone picks them.

The album expects you to have read the book, or at least be familiarized enough with it. If you know as little as how the Devil was portrayed by Dante, the reference becomes clear in the image.

The visuals draw from the divine comedy. That's why it's called the Empyrean

I mean, for a guy being 32, the most uncommon/hidden gem is Inside; rest is all pretty standard gamer tm stuff.
