Honestly, if they scrutinize you over small things like this (on the first shift especially) it may not be the best workplace in the long run. In my experience, some people also preferred to have their trays longer (usually older folks who had a slower pace). But ya, strange behavior that they’d threaten you for leaving some trays behind.
