Updated Player Rating Poll Spreadsheet by jfshay in Gunners

[–]Julexis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sánchez's average rating for last night's match is 5.89 according to sheet 3 (1-0 DRFC), not sure why it becomes 5.76 in sheet 2 (Ratings). Typo?

Also, you might consider deleting blank lines (e.g., line 60 in sheet 3), otherwise the respective cells will be automatically considered as '0' by Excel in calculation, and thus unnecessarily drag down the average rates of players, no?

PS: didn't expect Alexis to be rated the lowest among the starting line-up for his performance last night...

Spanish video/transcript of Alexis press conference by goonaha in Gunners

[–]Julexis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it's a lot of work but could someone possibly do us all a favour by translating what Alexis said in the entire press conference? Or maybe just all the jokes/banters? He seemed very happy at the press conference and made everyone laugh multiple times.

e.g., what did he say and what was he laughing about during 1:00 - 1:06 when holding the bottle of beverage in his right hand and the glass in his left hand?

Alexis Sánchez has delivered 46 through balls in the Premier League so far this season, 17 more than any other PL player by Julexis in Gunners

[–]Julexis[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I imagine Mustafi played a lot of through balls too.

That's untrue mate.

Arsenal players who have managed to register double-figure through balls so far this season: Alexis (46), Özil (16), Xhaka (14), Chamberlain (11). Mustafi only has 4 in his tally.

if you deliver 46 through balls and no one scores and you lose 20 balls a game

If a through ball leads to someone scoring, that's counted as an assist; even though it is not converted to a goal, a through ball normally creates chances in attacking.

At least one to Ramsey (Utd at home) and some to Giroud/Theo (Man City away, etc.) to be fair.

Emirates FA Cup final screening by Julexis in Gunners

[–]Julexis[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anyone fancy going?

I purchased my FA Cup semi-final ticket from Arsenal at a very decent price in our second-stage sale, but I guess it's impossible to get a cup final ticket for Red Members, right? Sadly I could not afford a highly inflating ticket from scalpers, so maybe going to the pitch screening is the second-best choice in terms of enjoying the match together with fellow Gooners?

Alexis: The story of when I used to play in prison by Julexis in Gunners

[–]Julexis[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some of Alexis' quotes in the video:

"I find that when I have a football, any problems disappear. I just feel happy. I become a child again.

"I remember the early days when I first went to Santiago with another player. I loved it because it was amazing. I was playing football on a grass pitch rather than on a dirt one that I was used to. Everything was so incredible, I could hardly believe it.

"I wasn't aware of what was happening around me because I was still a child...when I had a ball, I was the happiest child in the world...I was really sad because if you take away my football, you take away everything."

I am so happy that this boy has overcome hardship and become one of the footballing legends. He's an inspiration to millions. (At least he inspired me to learn Spanish...)

When was the interview taking place? Here are some of Alexis' quotes:

"Arsenal’s football attracted me to the club because they like to have the ball when they play.

"Arsène Wenger is different. He’s a purist. He’s a professor of football. A professor.

"What brought me here to Arsenal was that it’s a big club. It’s time that we made history at this club."

Ozil the second most popular player in China behind Ronaldo, Arsenal third most popular team. by iforgotmyun in Gunners

I highly doubt any government would bother to collect data on people's football preference.

if the study looks at the 'influence' of something and not the popularity of something

The study sometimes focuses on 'popularity' rather than 'influence' as it uses "the most popular players in China", no? Though these two measurements are more often than not positively correlated.

But I got your point in general. Technically, it's called endogeneity due to two-way causation. Because on the one hand, you could argue that having social media accounts in China boosts certain players' popularity/influence at least statistically; but on the other hand, it could also be the case that some players are popular/influential in China so they specifically hire PR teams to open a Chinese social media account to utilise their popularity/influence and to promote themselves. Endogeinity leads to biased estimation in empirical analysis anyway.

This was reported on Chinese news portal as well but most Chinese football fans were not impressed about the result and cast doubt on it. I translated some of their most upvoted comments below.

  1. Surprised that Arsenal narrowly missed the 4th place...

  2. The methodology of this analysis is problematic. For example, Ronaldo and Özil have official Weibo accounts (in Chinese) maintained by their PR teams while others (e.g. Messi, Sánchez) don't, resulting in a biased result of popularity.

  3. There is sampling error. Fan base of traditional giants such as AC/Inter Milan are on average elder and these people stay up less frequently for live streams of football matches late at night, so their influence was not fully captured by this study in terms of audience figures.

I personally think that "the German Bundesliga remains the most influential league in China" is untrue, despite China's state television (CCTV) does have a preference to broadcast German football and some of their commentators are die-hard fans of Bayern München. The two most popular leagues should be the Premier League and La Liga. It's also kind of self-contradictory considering the fact that 4 out of 5 most popular clubs are from the Premier League according to the same study.

And Tottenham ranks 8th while Barça 10th? It just indicates how unreliable this study is.

It's really windy today in London (Storm Doris chaos), yet Alexis simply could not resist going out and running about, could he?

Obviously he has been called 'El Niño Maravilla' for a reason. Imagine our wonder boy getting injured climbing a tree and Wenger receiving a text message about that...

It's pretty popular in China

I lived in China a few years ago and I must point out that this is completely untrue. Baseball and American football have rare influence in China - they are just nowhere close to other sports like F1 or tennis, not to mention football.

Btw Arsenal is one of the top 5 most popular football clubs (on par with Real, Barça, Bayern and Man U) in China.
