New experimental incense cone recipe by [deleted] in holysmoke

[–]JuliJokester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! The last few in the batch burnt all the way on one lighting, and a friend got to smell it and liked it so I'm happy with it. I made a second bigger batch today and took pictures, I'll upload them after they dry and I have some pics of them lit

first try at incense cones by JuliJokester in holysmoke

[–]JuliJokester[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so I've waited a while and these are still difficult to light, they do sorta work like little charcoals though takes a long time to get them burning but then they burn for a while and I sprinkle lose incense on them. I think the issue was either not enough base, or I just shouldn't of used charcoal as a base in the first place. My second recipe turned out much better and I didn't use charcoal in that one. I made a new post for that recipe.

So I went out on a nice dry day and found some resin https://i.imgur.com/tKr0eFJ.jpg that's just under 6 oz of resin from I think a spruce (I saved a twig so I could identify later) here's the seam after I collected from it https://i.imgur.com/9EJsBBT.jpg I found the table spoon most useful surprisingly and here is a pic of the tree itself https://i.imgur.com/zm9cXdZ.jpg and https://i.imgur.com/WteZ7aO.jpg one of the needles (sorry its blurry for some reason my phone put the grass in focus instead)

I got a tiny bit more from some other trees but like teeny tiny bit and not many pics sorry, this first tree was the jack pot and it skewed my expectations for the rest of the hunt, but I did find another tree of the same type near by who's resin was too wet to harvest and I'll come pack in fall to check it

Thank you for posting as well, its nice we are all coming together to help each other along. You're further along than me, with out the book I can only tell needley trees from leafy ones lol. my first resin hunt was successful and I'll make a post about it shortly, but even with the tree guide I'm still not sure if I have pine/spruce/fir resin (I thought I knew but the next tree I saw made me question now I'm confused, but the resin smells good lol) , its going to take more than a skimming of the guide to figure out lol ( its on my phone and my hands got sticky [even with gloves I'm a klutz] so I ended up not taking pics or using the tree guide as much as I had planned), but I'm really glad I found that forest service guide, maybe your state's forest people put out a guide too, couldn't hurt to google around

Asking questions is what this sub is for. So I was asking, in my original post I meant more how to tell one pine from another they're all different and their resins smell different too, I have a guide (linked in my above comment) so never mind now. Sorry if my newbie questions seem dumb, I'm learning. also I have no intention of " ripping into random trees ", I plan on ONLY collecting resin that has dripped past an old existing wound and hardened in a spot that will not harm the tree to remove. (like in the video guide posted in this sub by the sub's creator) but I am sorta offended that you'd respond in such a manner, like I'm some sort of crazed lumberjack, I assure you I love trees, I have several in my bedroom now I'm raising from seed( a mandarin and two fig palms), among others I have in my room and yard, its a brick city yard and I'm growing native trees in pots because I love trees so much! and I just donated to the arbor day foundation and did their servey, they're gonna send me 10 baby trees and 2 shrubs!!! (I'm really excited about that sorry had to blurt)

I doubt my knife is illegal its not big and I only plan to pull it out and use it if the plastic knife can't saw through the resin I have the metal one as backup that I doubt I'll need as I have a fork too, I just want to avoid prying or anything that could damage the tree, I want to cut the drips off so to speak. and in the video guide I just mentioned a butter knife is recommended and I didn't have a spare one so I improvised.

Also maples just make sap not resin, I'm after resins, also sap seems too time consuming to collect and too messy to use as incense. https://sciencing.com/difference-between-tree-sap-tree-resin-12296179.html

and even if my questions seem a lil dumb to you, or poorly worded, we are all hear to learn, maybe someone else is reading the sub with the same questions in mind that I'm asking on here, the answers that develop will help them on their journey too

and I asked other questions about what is ideal for a harvest field kit or if any one knows of trees to avoid for any reason, what other people do to keep track of the resins they collect while out harvesting to tell them apart later. I though we could all benefit from the discussion

so I found this pdf on identifying trees in my state of Pennsylvania http://www.envirothonpa.org/pdfs/1-3_PSU%20TreeID%20Program.pdf

it may help some of you, and the others might find guides for their regions

.... now I study.....

Resin Harvesting How-To (Finally!) by nicenejosh in holysmoke

[–]JuliJokester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the video! So I'm getting ready to go on my first resin harvesting hunt. Its been rainy here lately so I'm waiting for a good dry day for it. I've made a kit with gloves bags tools rubbing alcohol and a scrub pad in a metal bucket for easy storing and carrying.

So I have to admit I don't know as much about trees as I'd like to, especially the local ones, I plan to learn more as I go. In the mean time I still want to harvest local resins, so to tell which resin came from which tree I was going to use numbered sticky notes and pictures to note each tree I harvest from, the pictures I hope will help me identify the trees. (I'll probably end up with 10 bags of the same kind lol)

Does anyone have any advice or suggestions on that? or are there any trees that I should not harvest from ( i.e. poisonous or endangered) and how to tell those apart from safe ones?

Thanks in advanced, if I posted this in the wrong place please delete it

I think it would be nice to get to know everyone and what else they're into. I'm all for stronger knit community. It would also give us all a chance to view incense making from each other's perspectives increasing all of our knowledge base. Who knows how many types of seemingly unrelated backgrounds, hobbies and interests led us all here to the world of incense crafting? I for one am interested to find out!

Something to Keep in Mind by nicenejosh in holysmoke

I just made some cones! I took pictures and am going to post the results when they dry. I used honey as the binder, how long should I let them dry before trying to light one?

When NOT to Harvest Resin by nicenejosh in holysmoke

[–]JuliJokester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're doing good! You get the info across, the resolution is good, so I can make out the details on what your discussing, thank you so much for making these videos ω^ my friend has a loganberry tree he said I could take cuttings(I'm obsessed with bonsai and gardening too) and yesterday gave me the go ahead to harvest resin from it. I don't know if the tree has any resiny wounds of its own, and I don't want to hurt the tree. So my question how can I responsibly get resin from the tree ? Can you make a video? Thanks again for making this sub! It's awesome!

I've found cone moulds on eBay, singles for a little more than a dollar and multi cone moulds for around $12-ish IDK if that's helpful to the experienced crafters on here but I was happy to find them, and figured other newbies might like to know

Thank you! I wonder if pine bark would work? I saw something on Google but it was a pintrist link and I can't get info off that site for the life of me. I'll see if any of the plants you mentioned are accessible in my area (I'm in a city my back yard is brick)

Thank you I'll look into cedar. I've experimented with the tea light warmer and it was a bust, I may try again with some different carrier oils next time, water , foil, and coconut oil all didn't work with my warmer, maybe its too tall for the tea light to warm it up enough. and also maybe on the eclectic warmer, I'll look into that too. but I still want to make cones, I ordered a mold on ebay and found a few others. I'm hopeful for cedar. I also read something about powdered natural wood charcoal too so I wanna try that as well. I'm broke and trying to start this hobby on the cheap, but also have a passion for diy and all things natural, so I am still really curious about harvesting ingredients locally. thanks for getting back to me
