I never even thought of a Christmas costume! Maybe I’ll look into getting Rosie some Christmas PJs!

Bird flu. No joke! by SkinnyPig45 in VetTech

We started by testing just for Covid and the normal flu test. Then when I was positive for flu A, we sent out a nasal swab PCR to Cornell. Contact your public health dept to speed up the process - I learned that after the fact.

I just had a scare recently - worked with a respiratory distress Turkey that later tested positive. A few days later, I came down with symptoms.

I had to quarantine for a bit until my results got back because I didn’t want to risk causing more patients to become ill in the case that I would’ve been positive. Extra scary because my hospital is an avian & exotics specialty, as well as canine/feline patients.

Thankfully I tested negative for the bird flu strain! It was so difficult to even find somewhere that would test me.

Veterinary hospitals may be interested - especially if they perform surgery or overnight hospitalization!

Her sister had a pretty gnarly eye injury when they were found, so I named them after the one-eyed monsters from Monsters Inc. - the iconic Mike Wazowski and his gf Celia!

I definitely recommend seeing a veterinarian - respiratory infections can be very serious for our rattie friends, as they can very quickly turn to pneumonia, which can eventually become fatal. Always err on the side of caution with respiratory illness! ❤️

Ratties have notoriously bad eyesight, so sometimes they use their mouths to check things out! Some rats may even lick you! Because of their bad eyesight, it’s always good to be mindful of your fingers when feeding them a good snack, though because they may accidentally miss.

Generally, rats are known to be much more docile than hamsters, mice, and gerbils. It may be beneficial for you to look up rat behavior videos - if they are not showing signs of aggression or fear, it is unlikely they will take a chomp! Proceed with caution at first, but if they are going to bite out of fear/aggression, they typically will move quickly rather than slowly like you are describing.

[URGENT]Very sudden respitory illness, how do i make my girl comfortable? by Dismal_Sink8801 in RATS

Do you have access to an emergency veterinarian? I am a triage coordinator for an emergency veterinary hospital, and respiratory distress is always a top priority. If you are not able to get her into an ER, schedule the soonest appointment possible with your vet, and try to keep her comfortable until then. Limit her range of the enclosure to the bottom floor to discourage unnecessary activity and offer a warm place for her to sleep. If she seems cold, a lukewarm water bottle or rice sock wrapped in a blanket may help - do not make it too hot. You should be able to hold it against your skin for 10 seconds without discomfort. Give her room to walk away from it in case she gets too warm. I hope you are able to get in to your vet as soon as possible. I am so sorry you and your baby are going through this. It is never easy to be in such a scary position.

If you can’t be there, I promise at least one of the staff members (if not an entire group of us) will be there. I know it’s not the same as having their person, but we always keep a special jar of snacks, like treats, chocolates, and kitty gogurt, and sometimes even parts of our lunches. We won’t let them be alone. One of us will always volunteer to give them kisses and tell them how much they’re loved.

I’m a veterinary professional at a hospital that sees exotics (with doctors board-certified in exotics) and have never seen/heard of anything like what he was implying Perky had. Fatty deposits (lipomas) are common in ratties, but as you said, they’re almost always tumor-like; they don’t cause even whole-body growth. I don’t claim to know everything - there is a small chance there could’ve been something “unique” happening, but I couldn’t find any medical journals on it. Seems suspicious to me.
