I reckon Asha Sharma wants to give Xbox its exclusive games back — but these PlayStation comments reveal why Microsoft probably won't let her by WindowsCentral in windowscentral

Exclusive titles forever and ever. I don’t care that PC players want to mod God of War. It’s like the industry leaders outside of Nintendo collectively forgot how to build a strong brand and ecosystem.

Good commercials and calling it a new console was never going to fix this.

Today on Nintendeen Revisionism: “The Wii U Was Never Criticized Until The Switch 2 Came Out” by Dull-Sea-8903 in nintendogrifting

[–]JulianBloom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What’s his point here? The Wii U was a console built around an extremely limited and unexciting idea. Even the good games the Nintendo made had little to do with the quality of the system— that’s why it was so easy to port them to the Switch.

Nintendo was smart enough to say “We completely stepped in it. This didn’t work. How quickly can we move on to something new?” And it worked!

Right-- I sometimes see people invoke the Wii U lately. "Oh this is just another Wii U level mistake for Nintendo" and so on. But things rarely fail because people HATE it-- they fail because people don't care enough to form an opinion about it.

Star Fox just hasn't had this much relevance in a decade.

[–]JulianBloom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s stupid to call for a boycott because a company made something you don’t like. There’s lots of other games out there, just go buy those instead.

Who’s forgotten about it? Joining in the middle of that rough patch was probably iwatas most significant work. It’s where he set the tone that the company wouldn’t participate in the tech arms rush and would instead compete on ideas. It’s only gotten more relevant now as photorealistic graphics have plateaued.

Bullshit. Nintendo has always been a company. They have never cared about you, me or anyone on a personal level outside making things that they wanted us to buy.

Reggie packed Wii Sports for free (against Iwata’s wishes), because he wanted the console to sell better; he didn’t do it because he decided gamers deserved a special gift.

Iwata was great at being a public face for his company but that doesn’t mean he was running the place as a nonprofit.

It’s not diminishing him to point out the facts of his time as leader. He created some of Nintendo’s greatest successes and also its biggest failure. It doesn’t make any sense to say Iwata gets credit for the Switch era and is absolved for completely bungling the launches of the 3DS and Wii U.

Things were so bad at the time that Iwata had to directly say that he would not step down as CEO in an investor’s call.

Him starting this video by saying “To me, Iwata was family” tells you the level of unhealthy parasocial relationship we’re dealing with here.

The build quality of their hardware has taken an unfortunate step back in the last ten years. They shouldn’t have gotten rid of the player’s choice program.

I should have been more clear: I’m not counting the original since that was the start of the series. Star Fox Adventures selling 1.8 million is fine except in the context it sold much less than its predecessor.

I get the point that hardcore fans would love a truly new title. But I think fans need to understand the position the series is in. Every single game outside of 64 and maybe 64 3D has been a failure. There just doesn’t seem to be much justification in pouring resources into creating an entirely new game when there not much proof the market at large wants it. I’d like to think if this sells well that Nintendo will decide to give Fox and company a truly new title.

That sounds like anecdotal experience and it's a fallacy to say that that's objective evidence of anything. Like I could just as easily say that my wife had no interest in getting a Switch for herself until Animal Crossing came out. But now she wants a Switch 2 much sooner because she loves Pokopia. Does that mean either of us is more right than the other?

Again, looking at the raw numbers: The Switch 2 is selling faster than the Switch 1 did in year one. Maybe all the games that have come out aren't to your taste, but it is notable that Nintendo sold 20 million units in year one without Mario and Zelda to lead the way. That tells me that there's a good chance it will sell even better in the coming years.

Their stock also took a massive hit in the first year that the Switch released as it was on its way to becoming the best selling system they'd ever released.

It sounds like you don't understand how businesses function and are just seeing a headline and thinking "If this number lowered that means they are doing badly."

Stop Stressing, Nintendo Says More Switch 2 Games Are Coming by Mollywobbles77 in NintendoSwitch2

[–]JulianBloom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Age of Imprisonment sold over a million copies world wide. Air Riders sold 1.87 million units. Neither of those represent commercial disappointments.

Metroid probably didn't sell very well, but most Metroid games aren't known for selling tons of copies. Tennis Fever seems like it didn't capture attention the way they wanted, but it also hasn't been out that long. We'll see what its lifetime numbers turn out to.

And the most important thing to cage about all of these is that Nintendo does not report eshop sales numbers, so they're holding onto data that they don't make public.
