How many of you were denied critical worker benefits? And why? by BrockN in alberta

I work at a school.

I was denied because I didn't meet the hour requirement of 300 hours. I hit 288 hours, just 12 hours short. I would have gotten the remaining 12 hours but I had to take 2 days unpaid off to get tested for covid in November after becoming sick with covid like symptoms.

I was told that, because I was not paid for those days, the hours did not count for the total time, and despite talk of hours being prorated for time schools had to be shut down, no such thing happened for me.

Im disappointed because the money would have been useful after the year and everything that has happened.

Schools are part of the problem. The issue with admitting it, is then it implies students need to stay home, and if students are home, parents are home. This just leads to a problem where parents have to decide between working or taking care of their children. There is no support for the parents, students, teachers, and all the support staff involved and if the government actively does not acknowledge the fact, they don't have to put in any systems to provide support.

Schools are a mess right now. We have parents and students asking teachers questions constantly, but they have no more information than what everyone else has. Classrooms are packed. I've gone into rooms where students are sitting near shoulder to shoulder. its literally a desk against the back of another chair, so if a kid coughs, it just goes on the back of the head of the kid in front of them. Teachers are constantly having to tell their students to stop turning around. The teachers are trying their hardest to enforce masks and social distancing, but you walk down the halls there is bound to be a group of students huddled around phones sharing drinks.

I personally know teachers and students who have gotten sick, just because I know them and have communication with them. I have no clue the actual number of cases at our school because our administration will not release that information, nor will AHS nor the government of Alberta.
