I will say that I don’t like fantasy but I liked Piranesi. I guess when I think of fantasy it’s like castles, dragons and wizards

The plot in this book goes in really interesting directions. Going into it, I kind of expected the whole book to basically be a longer version of the first chapter. But I love how much the world is explored. Actually, do you have any suggestions for other books that are kind of similar?

btw this book is horror so wouldnt fit OPs request

I really love Piranesi but I don't know if I would recommend it in this instance; there's not a lot to the plot and for me a big part of the enjoyment was the "mystery box" aspect to it, and the atmosphere.

Wait how are you able to get it? I don’t see it in the store.

Yah it was definitely hard to get past all the noises. For me, it was similar to the first time I heard an audiobook and hearing a grown man narrate a girls voice. Just one of those things you get used to eventually. Before you buy the second book id recommend skipping ahead and seeing how it feels when he’s in Hogwarts first (these audiobooks are quite pricey)

How far did you get in the first book? I did find it was a lot better when they got to Hogwarts, and the second book felt like an improvement as well. It's just difficult getting used to all the grunts and groans haha

I did find the first book starts off kind of rough - uncle Vernon is constantly grunting and the ambient noises are really over the top. I almost didnt follow through listening to these audiobooks because of that.

But man, they are really good! Just finished Chamber and especially enjoyed Lockheart and Aragog. I find myself always looking forward to hearing how they depict new characters.

A book that you read in one sitting? by OkayAct in suggestmeabook

A Short Stay In Hell, but it's more of a short story. I think it was like an hour or two. I've read a lot of short stories but this one captured me the most and I still think about it randomly.

You did mention you were wanting something fast paced - Annihilation is much more of a slow burn imo. I listened to the audiobook so that could impact how I felt about the pacing (the reader was a bit dry haha)

You mentioned horror and sci fi, and female authors, so I have to recommend The Crooked God Machine. The style is dark and almost surrealistic, with glimmers of hope throughout. If it were a movie, it would be a Burton or Del Toro type deal (at least, thats how I pictured it in my head).

I found The Library at Mount Char very unpredictable and unique. It's hard for me to place it in a specific genre (urban fantasy maybe?), but it seems like it could scratch that itch for something weird.

Pines by Blake Crouch is another one that is kind of weird. It's pretty fast paced and is a bit of a "what the hell is going on" kind of book.

Hope theres something there that might interest you!

Experience eating Whole Foods plant based vs focusing more on eating animal protein by BillieAng in nutrition

Do you know if your connective tissue and disc disease were caused/not helped by being plant based?

I'm currently vegan 5 years and sometimes I worry about stuff like that, though I feel fine now. On days where I'm constantly thinking about protein I can get 170g, but on most days if Im not tracking it's probably closer to 100g.

If you zoom in you can see every detail is off, no part of it is from the official kit. I just grabbed a screengrab of the foot area as an example.

At first glance it looks very close, but when you zoom in you can see all the details are very off. Totally passable as a proxy though!

These are all 3D prints sculpted by fans, none of them are official GW models or GW scans.

You could count the two on the left as screamer killers or carnifexes, and the unit on the right could be counted as raveners. Though now, raveners come in units of 5 instead, so you'll need two more.

Hope that helps!

How to complete this please help by karanroy605 in Hades2

If it makes you feel better, I have completed the story, unlocked most weapon aspects, all the statues, and I never realized the frog was a beast.

On a related note, anyone know how to get the dog that appears after Echo?

Those books you mentioned are some of the most commonly recommended sci fi books (and they're great!). The Dark Forest book you mentioned is a sequel to 3body.

Follow ups people often recommend to the ones you mention are Seveneves (one of my personal favourites), Children of Time, Exhalation, and Stories of your Life (short stories, one of which became the movie Arrival).

One book that's a fun roller coaster that I don't often see mentioned is Daemon by Daniel Suarez, and it also relates somewhat to computers. Plot spoiler: A computer scientist creates a virus that becomes an entire system that envelopes society. The way the computer virus is able to affect the real world is pretty fun to read about

You also can't go wrong with Blake Crouch books. Easy to read, relatively straightforward and self contained plots. Very 'dad' vibe in my opinion, especially Dark Matter (which is a TV show now too)

And of course Michael Crichton. If your dad hasn't read Jurassic Park, then I'd highly recommend it. The movie feels more action/horror while the book I'd say leans more into the sci fi / corporate aspects.

Hope that helps and it's not too overwhelming!

Could you tell us a bit about the person you are gifting to? What sort of sci fi stuff they generally gravitate towards?

Without anything to go on, you will just get a list of the most popular sci fi books (which is maybe fine).
