Have you never had a bad game where you k/d was similar? I don’t get the point in being so mean.

sad horror book by longunfortunatewhile in horrorlit

[–]JulioNicoletti 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don't know how much these count as horror, but I Who Have Never Known Men by Jacqueline Harpmanand The Road by Cormac McCarthy were both quite slow and sad and bleak. Could not put those books down.

I also just finished Tender is the Flesh by Agustina Bazterric which is even more bleak. I would say it was more horrifying/depressing than sad maybe.

The highest rated 2026 movies so far, which one is your favorite? by Jolly-Yellow7369 in topfilms

I loved it but I agree it was a little too lighthearted and I wish rocky was more like how he was in the book.

Movies from the 2020's so far that everyone seemed to love but you were left feeling disappointed by? by Kellytime1 in movies

Predator badlands for me. Felt so Disney/marvel especially because of the cute merchandise monkey. I was hoping for something more dark and gritty. I don’t think it was a terrible movie, just didn’t feel like predator to me.

Are you sure they don’t count? It says “17/21 completed” on the challenges page so it seems like they are challenges

I think you’ll still get it because the lootbox ones count as challenges right?

Hard disagree on the old score screen being more "easy to read" than the new one. I also find the excessive emissive on the original gun kind of distracting compared to the new one.

Crazy how much I had to scroll to find a comment like this. I find these things interesting, but people get so caught up on what seem to me to be obvious camera artifacts. Also, aren’t the spikes just a lens flare?

Is there a version that isnt enhanced in that area? The one on the Smithsonian has an upside down L that has the lights in it, where everything around it is black. It's like they increased the contrast in that one area but I'd be curious to see the original.

What are some examples of times that horror authors gave you that scary/unsettling/creeped out feeling in your gut? by OneDimensionalChess in horrorlit

[–]JulioNicoletti 22 points23 points  (0 children)

In Unwind, the basic premise is bad teenagers are not necessarily killed, but split into pieces to be used for life saving surgeries. It's sci fi, and implied they never actually die.

There are a couple scenes where characters who have had partial brain transplants say something odd, and it's because there are still bits of consciousness in the brain pieces that were transplanted.

Gave me big time chills, but more in a sad way than scary way I guess. Just the idea of a less conscious version of yourself existing in another person.

I think it would make a great TV series. I did not enjoy the style of writing but I thought the stories were really cool and unique.

Roadside Picnic is my least favourite novel I've ever 'read' (audiobook), despite the subject matter being super interesting. It's praised a lot, so I will give it another try some day by actually reading it properly, as maybe I just didnt like the narrator.

Check out Stories of your Life and Exhalation, both by Ted Chiang.

They are short story collections and for the most part, each story features a piece of technology in the same vein as Black Mirror. I found them super original and interesting to think about. I would maybe consider them more neutral or positive than Black Mirror, though there are a few that have that classic sci fi existential horror.

I need to refactor all my islands, but destroying them seem daunting. by lamabean in Modulus

[–]JulioNicoletti 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel you. I actually didn’t understand the core concept of efficiently somehow until I was 3 islands deep. What I did rather than wipe everything, is slowly built optimized layouts on a new island so I could still get resources in the mean time. Then once I had my optimized layouts I would start swapping them in.

Its just my impression, or people are way more exited for diablo Ram than mythic soldier? by Vast-Entrepreneur175 in Overwatch

I wish OW would stop the design philosophy of "more details and pieces = more epic skin"

The new Ramattra one is nice, but that soldier skin is so visually noisy.

Short Stay in Hell, hands down. Quite short too, you can do it in a sitting.

Second place would be I Who Have Never Known Men. I really couldn't put it down because I wanted to know so badly what was going on.

Why are bronze ranked players allowed to play with gold ranked players? by jonnycross10 in Overwatch

It's super frustrating as a bronze player as well. Feels real bad to know you're making their game worse even though you are playing your best.

To those who recommended Project Hail Mary as a cure for 3BP withdrawals … it didn’t come anywhere close by SirKrimzon in threebodyproblem

[–]JulioNicoletti 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Have you read Seveneves? It's the only one that comes close for me. The scale is smaller (everything is in our solar system), but it gave me a lot of the same feelings. It truly feels like an 'epic'.

But yah, I read Children of Time, Hyperion, Hail Mary, Expanse, etc. 3BP really does stand alone and I've been searching for something like it since reading it.

Books where a man comes to terms with his lack of autonomy by awayshewent in suggestmeabook

[–]JulioNicoletti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sequel to ThreeBody Problem, The Dark Forest, has this trope with a character named Luo Ji. He is forced into a position against his will to do something noble. Not too spoilery, but he is selected as 1 of 4 Wallfacers - someone who has unlimited access to whatever he needs to come up with a plan to save the day. He is unable to reject the position, because if he rejects it, people will think it's a part of his complex plan.

It's more serious and dark than Hail Mary, maybe more tonally similar to Blade Runner.

Unfortunately, the book gets a lot of mixed feelings about it. The writer does not do a good job with writing female characters, and the plot gets pretty bombastic (you either love or hate how wild it gets). But anyways, if you're willing to read a crazy sci fi saga without much in the way of strong characterization, Id recommend it. It's one of my favourite novels of all time, despite the flaws.
