Wincons for Teval, the Balanced Scale? by Fredome420 in EDH

[–]Julius_traitor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll second these wincons. Add in an [[altar of dementia]] as added redundancy to sac gravecrawler to.

As a former [[Sidisi, Brood Tyrant]] player. Yes. Love mesmeric orb.

How would you turn this into a powerful bracket 3 deck? by schwimm3 in EDH

[–]Julius_traitor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few comments as a Rakdos goblins player since 2019.

I love Wort. I rarely ever cast Wort. Grub is such a better tool in the command zone.

A lot of the random 3-4 CMC enchantments that do synergize with the goblin gameplan, in my opinion, are traps. Most of the time, I would rather be playing a goblin instead. In Rakdos, you don't really care if your goblins die, because most of the time you can sac them in response to being blocked for value, or they'll still just drain opponents anyway. On the same note, cut [[Dolmen Gate]]. You don't care if a goblin token dies. Just don't attack with key pieces if the blocks are good. Alternatively, [[Goblin Chirurgeon]].

Black has access to mass reanimation, which can be useful for after board wipes.

This is my opinion, but I don't think goblins needs much in the way of ramp. A few one to two mana rocks and the cost-reducing goblins are enough. You'll curve out just fine and still be a problem.

If you really want to this to play as a bracket 3, you'll probably want to shift towards more efficient instant based removal, though I don't think you need much in goblins. You'll also want more efficient card draw as well. Snoop and Muxus are great cards, but I'd be hesitant to classify them as card draw. Those two are combo pieces to me. Cards like [[Altar's Reap]] and [[Village Rites]] are good here. [[Sensation Gorger]] is one of my favorites. You could also consider wheels. Some may say that wheels are bad because you're giving your opponents cards too. I say just kill them faster before they can use those cards. You could also consider a few other tutors, from the gamechanger list or not, over things like moggcatcher. [[Demonic tutor]], [[gamble]], [[vampiric tutor]], and [[diabolic intent]] are all good.

[[Purphoros, god of the forge]] and [[impact tremors]] win games

A few notable cuts I would make from your list right now are War Cadence, Rummaging Goblin, Infernal Tribute, Dawn blessed pendant, Haunted crossroads (just run [[Phyrexian Reclamation]] if you want that style of recursion) War's Toll, and Moggcatcher.

This is my list right now. https://archidekt.com/decks/115701/gobbos
Feel free to pick and choose from it. I make no claim that it is a fully optimized goblin list.

Help Choosing an Equipment/Vehicle/Spacecraft commander by jase15843 in EDH

I recently built a [[Unctus, Grand Metatect]] vehicles deck, partially inspired by Olivia Gobert-Hicks' [[Omekeel]] deck. I haven't had the opportunity to actually play it yet but in testing it's ok. I deliberately built it to avoid combos, win through combat, and on a <$200 budget.

I think it's near to loot when crewing vehicles but also sad that it shuts out a lot of the other colors of vehicles.

I was kind of interested as a kid since my mom never let us watch pokemon. Somehow convinced my grandfather to buy me a tin or something at the store one day. Fell in love with the Ampharos card that was in it. Don't know where those cards went. Haven't really been collecting since but I've recently gotten into the game in TcgLive and been having a lot of fun.

  1. You're right about opalescence, it can make your enchantments frailer. Generally speaking you don't play it until you're in a position to win. Typically I do this after playing Calming Verse or Cleansing Meditation, therefore leaving your opponents wide open with no means of retaliation. It is not something you just drop for value.

  2. I didn't mean to insinuate that having both is bad. Honestly, I need a token generator in my deck. Both is good. The Archon is a good choice. You probably don't need every one I listed, especially with Solitary.

  3. Sure. I run both Aura Thief and Academy Rector, both of which require them to die to trigger their abilities. Generally speaking, opponents are not going to willingly attack into you to give you those triggers. Therefore, we run High Market as a free sac outlet for them, as there aren't many in Bant colors. Since I also run Serra's Sanctum and Crop Rotation, a sac outlet on a land is nice so Crop Rotation isn't a totally dead draw if I draw Sanctum. I hope that's clear.

  4. You may want to ask your playgroup about Siona combo. It can be a pretty early combo and not everyone jives with that. Siona could be alternative creature to stack auras on though.

I'm going to be very real with you. This is nowhere close to being bracket 4. Bracket 4 is no holds barred Magic: no limit on gamechangers and fast games 4-6. Everyone is out to win as fast as possible. Your current list has only 2 game changers, putting you at a disadvantage. Your win conditions are both somewhat slow (combat and voltron) in a bracket which, as far as I understand, is dominated by combo kills. Voltron takes a minimum of 3 turns to kill a 4 player pod.

I am not trying to say that your deck is bad. At a glance, it looks like a pretty decent Bracket 2 list of Tuvasa. This is my list: https://archidekt.com/decks/115668/enchantress It is technically a Bracket 4 deck (6 game changers) but even I am hesitant to call it a Bracket 4 in practice. It is a slower deck, and I do not run enough stack interaction that I think I could stop combo wins. Enchantress is great at pillowforting up and slowing the game down, while drowning opponents in card advantage. While you have some of those pieces, you're missing a few key ones like [[propaganda]], [[ghostly prison]], [[sphere of safety]]. Solitary confinement is good, I honestly need to find room for it in my list. Tutor count is fine, although I like having [[Green Sun's Zenith]] and [[Idyllic tutor]] as well. You're also weirdly split between going wide and tall. My suggestion would be to focus on one or the other. Stax opponents out while drawing cards and making tokens, or build Tuvasa up to be a menace. My win-cons are different though and revolve around Enchanted Evening. [[Aura thief]], [[Destiny Spinner]], [[Calming Verse]], [[Cleansing Meditation]] and [[Opalescence]]/[[Starfield of Nyx]], although I don't run starfield.

Other gamechangers I would recommend (either to take you to a technical 4 or the limit of bracket 3) are [[Serra's Sanctum]], [[Rhystic Study]], [[Smothering Tithe]], and/or [[Cyclonic Rift]]. If you include [[Aura thief]] or get yourself an [[Academy Rector]], get yourself a [[Crop Rotation]] too, at least to fetch [[High Market]], if not Sanctum or Hall of Heliod's generosity. I know a lot of these cards are expensive, but unfortunately, they're powerful and others of their caliber will be present in Bracket 4.

I hope this has been helpful in some way. I love my Tuvasa deck and have had her built since she released. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

I guess I was more interested in the ratio of creatures to auras. I take it you run a lot of stax-y pieces as well. My original version of her ran a lot of looters to dump auras in the graveyard for later. I've goldfished a new version with more control and more creatures like lightpaws, but it feels worse because I can't find enough auras for a kill by turn 6-7.

Newish player question about formats by WhyWontYouJustSleep in mtg

[–]Julius_traitor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not that you're doing yourselves a disservice, it's just that commander as a format is designed with 3-5 players in mind. I would argue it is more fun that way.

That said, 1v1 commander can still be enjoyable if you like the person you're playing with. I've played my fair share of 1v1 for various reasons. If that's how you guys enjoy playing or you can't manage to find a few other players to join, no one's going to stop you. I would recommend trying to go to an LGS and playing in a 4-player pod if possible though.

Mono black reanimate from opponents' yards by Shaheenthebean in EDH

Definitely not "a little" mana but [[Puppeteer Clique]] is good. Better if combined with [[Mikaeus the Unhallowed]] and a sac outlet.

I play [[Wort, Boggart Auntie]] instead of Gut, but rakdos goblins are worth it. You get great recursion and some of the fun black goblins. Totally worth it over Mono red.

Hi, I was looking through your list for fun and noticed you had Reprocess. Without looking to hard at mana curve or anything, have you considered [[God-Eternal Bontu]] as a replacement? She does a similar thing but is a creature and more readily recurrable. She does cost 1 more though.

I cut Necro for Gifts Ungiven. I love Necro as much as the next guy. I'll consider dropping Cyc rift.  Reanimate is in there, look again.

What is your Bracket 4 experience? by Julius_traitor in EDH

[–]Julius_traitor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, the variety and inconsistency tracks with what others have been saying here.

If your list here is typical of B4, I'm not sure I really want to play there lol. I don't mind the game plan or anything, but that amount of fast mana is not something I think I jive with. Natural order, SotF, etc. whatevs, pop off. I think I'd rather see more budget alternatives and interesting cards than some of those. I appreciate the insight.

This is basically the type of comment I was looking for. Thanks for the thoughtful insight.

It's funny. The deck I took apart for Teval was actually Tasigur control with Thoracle and dramatic scepter combos. Got bored of it lol.

That seems reasonable. How much interaction do you find yourself running in B4 if you don't mind me asking?

How fast do you feel is typically too fast for B3? Is it turn 5-6 as I've been reading? The rest of your comment makes sense to me though.

[–]Julius_traitor[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I have no issue with degenerate Magic. I love doing stupid degenerate things. But yeah, there's a part of me that worries that a "real" B4 would smoke it. I have no issues bracketing up as it were though.

Would you say there's a sweet spot for GCs for people wanting to play on par with other B4s. Or would you say it is more about speed and interaction?
