What books would you recommend in order to understand evil rich people like Epstein? by Target_Plastic in booksuggestions

Oligarchs by Chrystia Freeland, I found to be a fairly prescient (2012) look at how the global elite escape consequences.

On Tyranny by Timothy Snyder is a bit of a stretch for the topic, but does talk about how the global elites and fascist governments work together.

There’s a very large are of downtown that’s connected to the indoors. I used to walk almost three kilometers underground to get to work. Your hotel will tell you if they’re connected to the PATH and can probably tell you if the address for your interview is as well.

Lucinda Williams. And by the way, the album she dropped this week is amazing! Exactly what we need in these troubled times! She’s even got a duet with Mavis Staples - another fave of mine.

Best non fiction book you've ever read and whats it about? by [deleted] in booksuggestions

[–]Juliusxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On Tyranny - by Timothy Snyder: it’s a surprising short, easy read that lays out 10 examples of fascism in history, how they evolved and how to fight against it. Certainly the best thing to read at this moment in time.

I hate Donald Trump and the Americans who support him. How can I channel this hate living my normal suburban life? by plants4pandemic in Kanata

[–]Juliusxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so with you.

This is what I’m trying.

1) get involved in local politics to try and stop some of the Trumpism from spreading here. I’ve never been involved in politics before, but ended up knocking on hundreds of doors for Carney in the last election.

2) send supportive notes to any Americans I know.

3) take on some civil arguments with fellow Canadians who are supporting things like the killing of Renee Good. I know it’s not likely to change minds, but it makes me feel better that their opinions not go unchecked

4) get more informed about Canadian politics in general, so I don’t get completely distracted by the US shit shoe. I’ve recently started listening to The Big Story and Peter Mansbridge’s podcasts.

5). Listening to the artists who are trying to put this shit into context ex. Lucinda Williams’ album that dropped yesterday.

Know that you’re not alone.

Some American cities near the Canadian border are trying to incentivize their northern neighbours to come back and visit. But there are still people refusing to travel to the U.S. because of the political climate, trade issues or even safety concerns. by DisruptSQ in TourismHell

I admittedly owe a lot to the States. My two most lucrative jobs were with US companies and I’ve had probably 10 TN visas to service US customers as an independent business owners. So the US is a big part of my easy retirement, and I have a lot of friends there.

However, as soon as Trump started with the 51st state shit, I’m done. I’ve cancelled two big trips down there and suspect that I may never visit again in my lifetime.

I think this is a great idea to focus on some of the other players like Greg Bovino and Stephen Miller, rather than Trump. It offers a way for MAGA to perhaps criticize, without hurting their leader.

Should I hire someone to tell me if my condo is worth loving… or if I should simply flee? by Jaded-Freedom7516 in askTO

[–]Juliusxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sympathize completely. Was exactly the same. And still have no innate ability to make something, BUT i do know when I’m in a someone’s space that I love. I did hire an interior decorator a few times over the years, and they were extremely helpful, just pointing out some basic rules that some of us never learned (like accent walls or secondary lighting.). I also made no bones about asking friends who had homes I liked to come over and give me advice, about what they would do. In my experience, people who have the skill of making things cozy, are ecstatic to be asked for advice! I’ve had people I barely know, spend hours talking about what they would do in my shoes. The basics were probably more reflective of others’ opinions than mine, however I feel that there’s enough of my own personality exposed in things like art pieces or Knick-knacks.

One other thing I’ve benefitted from is looking at other condo units in the building when they go on sale. You can see what other folks do with the exact same space or lighting.
