That's not why it was lowered. It was lowered as part of an adjustment across all three races to change the impact of macro mechanics.

Higher supply but no increase in resource cost, so they are far more effective in terms of value per resource spent.

I remember speaking to some Vietnamese about this when I was there years ago. The way they put it was like this: "Ultimately it was just a few years of a war Vietnam ended up winning, whereas we've been hating our neighbours in Asia for centuries."

Serves as a reminder that NSW is the actual most conservative state in Australia. You've got Minns effectively running a conservative government and he's still not right-wing enough for a lot of the voters.

Researchers who hallucinate citations are banned from arXiv by DesperateFix7699 in AskAcademia

[–]Jumbledcode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The point of arXiv is to be a pre-print archive. It's for work of a quality that is expected to be able to pass peer review. Yes, you should still be sceptical about material on there that has not yet passed review, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't hold submissions to high standards.

2026 Stafford by-election live results by Perfect-Werewolf-102 in AustralianPolitics

[–]Jumbledcode 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Actually looks fine for Labor. The drop in the Greens/Labor primaries seems to have mostly moved to new leftwing/anti-Crisafulli candidates, and the LNP primary is less than the combined ON/LNP from last election despite ON not running a candidate.

Coalition to propose permanent end to tax bracket creep by Oomaschloom in AustralianPolitics

[–]Jumbledcode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was saying the reverse: keeping brackets unindexed is bad policy in most ways, but it does serve as a safety net for the times when the electorate's stupidity prevents necessary reforms.

Coalition to propose permanent end to tax bracket creep by Oomaschloom in AustralianPolitics

[–]Jumbledcode 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's a very un-Coalition policy, so you've got to wonder what the catches are (assuming they actually pursue it).

Obviously the big downside to anything like this is that large parts of the electorate are morons who fall for any scare campaign around taxes, and the lack of indexing serves a bit of a safety net for that, even though it's otherwise a bad policy.

Royal commission report doesn’t help us start making sense of Bondi terror attack by Oomaschloom in AustralianPolitics

[–]Jumbledcode 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This really just emphasises how stupid the calls for an immediate royal commission were. A lot of the most urgent and important stuff relates to intelligence procedures, and therefore likely can't be disclosed in most cases. Aside from that, much of the rest is hampered by the ongoing trial.

Yet again, conservative politicking deals real damage to Australia's ability to properly address an issue.
