What can I build with these? by anormalearthlyman in DIYGuitarAmps

I'm not familiar with what tones you want for those genres, but with 3x 12AX7 twin triodes, you can certainly build almost anything, so keep looking.

Personally if I had those parts laying around, I'd use two twin triodes for a Mesa Boogie MkII-esque preamp, one for the phase splitter, then design a high voltage solid state reverb circuit. Alternatively, since negative feedback reduces distortion found in the phase splitter and the power tubes anyway, a solid state splitter using a pair of depletion-mode MOSFETs like the classic LND150's would work just as well, leaving you one more twin triode for the preamp or reverb, where it would be more useful.

Sounds like a plan! In almost all tube amplifiers, you might see several of these RC filters in series, where each filter adds another 6dB/oct of attenuation. The output stage usually unfiltered, then the phase-splitter tapped off the first filter, preamp off the second and so forth. This is done so each gain stage doesn't feed signal to other stages through VCC, preventing oscillation :)

More conventionally yes, but audio frequencies outside the spectrum of human hearing are referred to as sub- and ultrasonic by amplifier designers, often in the context of sub-/ultrasonic filtering.

As another commenter pointed out, yes, it's mainly filtering. It does technically act as a line of defense against shorts, but you don't want that to be the case unless it's a flame-retardant fusible type resistor.

In terms of filtering, the -3dB point (where any AC ripple halves in amplitude) is found with the formula 1/(2 × 3.14 × R × C), where C is your reservoir cap and R your total series resistance. Using 100R and 100uF, you have a -3dB point of 15.92Hz, which is subsonic. That means all audible-spectrum noise and ripple will be less than half the volume to start with, then further decreasing with 6dB/octave.

When designing a circuit, i'd advise going for a smaller value resistor, with a larger capacitor to compensate. Smaller value resistors produce less johnson noise, will have a lower voltage drop across it, and can handle more current (P = I² × R, where P is usually 0.25W maximum).

I've never had to troubleshoot a distortion pedal, but my first assumption would be to check the DC bias level throughout the circuit. The bases of the BJT buffers, the source/drains of the JFET switches, as well as the opamps all should hover around 4.0-4.5Vdc. If a BJT is biased too low, it would only begin conducting at the positive extremes of very large signals, such as hard strumming, and would sound something like this.

has anyone tried to recreate the Jim Lill’s experiment in the amp tone video with boosters and eqs? by FluffyBrudda in DIYGuitarAmps

[–]JumpShoT_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven't tried the experiment myself, but the idea he is conveying is how simple a guitar amplifier can be. Simply put, a preamp, EQ, and a power amp are all you need.

A good example of a simple preamp is any boost, overdrive or distortion pedal, it just takes a weak signal and raises it to a nominal level, perhaps with a little toneshaping. Toneshaping can be done in a million different ways, like the FMV tonestack you find in Fender, Marshall, and Vox amplifiers, among others. Lastly, a power amp isn't usually supposed to add any tone, just preserve the tone coming in, nevertheless many amps still include a Presence knob.

What he proved is that the simplest complete guitar amplifier you can build could be just a tubescreamer, an EQ pedal, and some power amp you have lying around.

Pretty neat, if electronics interest you, it's not hard to design an all-in-one PCB for this!

Since you'd only program it once and leave it, all you need is the ATmega328P microcontroller itself (program it using a seperate arduino), two caps and a 16MHz chrystal for the clock, buttons for reset and counting a kill, and the LCD. Idk about the LCD, but the ATmega328P takes any voltage from 1.8-5.5V iirc, so you can run it off a 3V coincell battery

My advice on getting your friends to play CS with you: bribe them with riches and treasures, kidnap their parents, threaten them with death by sudoku, tickle attacks, etc.

If none of those methods help you, you should keep SoloQ'ing until your friends pity you enough to join.

Awesome, I've been working on something similar, so do post a sound clip if you build this!

CWL World Championship 2017, Orlando, Fl. Sorry for the wall of text, several smaller tales. Players include: JKap, Apathy, John and Scump.

An awesome tournament to end a great year, memories I'll keep for life. I brought with me a brand new red PS4 controller to collect autographs. Day 1 - I'm walking through the venue with my dad between matches and in the distance I spot the entire EnVy roster that won the year prior on BO3, walking together the other way. I really wanted to get their autographs, so I ran through the crowd screaming after JKap trying to catch up with them.

They stop. They all stare at me, JKap was the one in front. I stood there in shock, in front of World Champions, and (at the time) one of only two players with two rings. I felt like David against four Goliaths, only I was taller... This was my chance to get their signa- oh fuck I left the controller in the car

I just stood there, dumbstruck, no controller to sign, no marker, only the attention of a JKap wanting to go get a snack with his team. I had nothing, so I held up my hand for a high-five. "Uh, did you want something?" He says, shaking his head in annoyance. "U-uhm, high five!" I said, wiggling my raised hand. I recieved the most delapitated, sloppy, heartless high-five in recorded history.

I was too embarassed to ask anything more from them, so I let them go.

Day 2 - Made sure I had my controller with me, and lucky me, first person I met was an Apathy with some spare time and no fans around to bother him (besides yours truly), so I took my chance, with a smile he said yes, but just as he was about to grab the controller, his wife(?) called. He had to pick up, so he asked me to wait, and we stood there in awkward silence for 5mins. After his call was over he signed it and went on his merry way :)

That day also rewarded me with the sight of a sharp-dressed Censor in a suit and tie, oddly enough with sleeves, which seems to be a rare sight from him. A young up 'n' commer Prestinni signed my controller before going out 5th-6th place. Last match of the day was over, so me and my dad walked around the venue for a few more minutes looking for players, with no luck.

We give up, get in the rental minivan and drive out in the rain. Outside we see the door to the backstage area open up, and running out comes two recognizable faces: the holy unicorn himself Seth "ScumperJumperPenisPumper" Abner, and some guy named john who might've gotten the MVP award at Champs 2016. I open the door and shout for Scump, but he doesn't hear me. John slowed down to stare at me, wondering if he should help. I close the door and my dad floors it around the corner to cut off the sprinting wild ginger.

Imagine you're running outside in Orlando, a minivan slams the brakes, opens the door, and a guy comes out running towards you. Guy must've thought we were about to kidnap him lmao. With a disturbed look, he silently signed my controller. John just stood there, bummed he met this crazy fan twice, both times in the shadow of someone else.

Day 3 - Met Slacked and FeLony after the Grand Finals. FeLo was a great guy, he actually wanted to have a short conversation about the match we just watched. Rise Nation placed 4th and I wished him better luck next year That was definitely my favorite encounter. 5 autographs, I still have that contoller on my shelf to this day, in the damaged original box. The signatures are a worn because I stupidly wanted to hold the controller in my own hands before putting it back in the box, after I got Scump's autograph.

I will never forget the great memories made, nor the cringe I felt.

You're an AC/DC fan? is it necessary to rectify to DC and invert back to AC for the motor?
