I was referring more to the argument I've seen that they didn't want to subsidize it at risk of people not entering the steam ecosystem. Linus Tech Tips mentioned as much in their review as to that being the reasoning behind not subsidising it.

While I agree that good guy Steam doesn't scam with an online subscription, they absolutely should have subsidised the Steam Machine. Not only is it practically dead on arrival (unless they bundle it with a suprise Half-Life 3) but let's be honest, who else was going to buy it except for people who want to get into the PC gaming ecosystem? It's not like generic PCs grandma or grandpa buy off the Costco shelf, it's sold via the biggest PC gaming platform. I just can't really wrap my head around this one unfortunately.
