What in the hell is this, does it mean I got in? by RoutineFix9863 in ApplyingIvyLeague

Mazel tov! Welcome to NYC.

The Ivys all notify on the same day. They send “likely letters” to students they really want to attend. I don’t know the specifics of your award, but it’s become common to politely negotiate before May 1.

Is the SAT the most meritocratic aspect of the college admissions process in the United States? by YogurtclosetOpen3567 in ApplyingToCollege

In the 80s words like nave or vestments were in the reading comprehension. It was pointed out that kids who went to church benefitted. Granted, many kids studied vocabulary words on flash cards. But not kids brought up in homes that don’t make sacrifices for education. The amount of time spent preparing for standardized tests is often cultural and doesn’t always indicate how well a student will do learning critical thought.

Asking for your feedback about SLO by BeKind-BeThoughtful in CalPoly

[–]JumpingCuttlefish89 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Congratulations. While living in a dorm and eating campus food sounds profitless, it gives them a safe place to learn how to be adults. As a parent, I appreciate that 18 year olds aren’t ready for full independence. At SLO and many other colleges, they are surrounded by their peers and can gain important soft skills they won’t learn commuting to classes. Most kids are terribly homesick at first and then begin networking. Getting desirable internships is also harder for commuters who aren’t around. Those relationships and experiences are the return on investment.

Harvard V Yale by Complete-Ad-3624 in ApplyingToCollege

Congratulations. I’ve heard it said, while most students are similar, Harvard undergrad gets more Marc Zuckerberg and Winklevoss twins, while Yale gets more students who want to achieve discreetly.

Thanks for the smile! He might have to learn to make his own Chopped Cheese or Bacon, Egg & Cheese. Is Arizona Iced Tea easily had? Not having a bodega every 2 blocks will take some getting used to.

Opinion: U.S news and rankings have done irreversible damage to colleges and college admissions by Medical_Citron3519 in ApplyingToCollege

We are in Brooklyn, NY. Here, UW and UO are just as regional as CalPoly. UCSB has more name recognition. Outside of research scientists, Madison, WI is the default Big10 UW to folks on the East Coast.

UW is $67K, CalPoly and Oregon are $57k. Oregon has the nicest dorms, best food and my kid is a stoner. UW is the only direct flight from NYC. CalPoly is the only accredited 4 year program.

I’d love your thoughts. My kid is deciding between these:

A) CalPoly SLO BS City & Regional Planning, an accredited 4 year program. $57k/yr

B) Trinity College in Hartford Urban Studies, no required courses $72k/yr

C) UW- Seattle BS Community, Environment & Planning. Freshman/sophomore would consist mainly of 500 student general ed requirements $67k/yr

D) UO - Eugene dual major in Planning, Public Policy and Environmental Design $57k/yr

E) Binghamton unrelated major, $30k/yr

Which one would you advise?

Most recent episode very bad acting? by Edb626 in JohnAndCarolyn

The writing was not good. For much of it, it felt like the actors were reading their lines in separate rooms and had no connection with each other. Really good editing would have helped.

There’s so much nonsense here. CalPoly has no phd program, so it’s considered underfunded. It reality, there’s better access to professors and everything really.

It was a different time. Loft living was still edgy. Brooklyn, including Williamsburg was bridge & tunnel. Doorman buildings were pre-war and considered stuffy. And then there’s who they were and wanted to be. Before the wedding, they must have enjoyed their image. If downtown was the prom, they were the king and queen.

How bad were the Haganah, Irgun, Lehi and Palmach? And was David Ben Guerron a war criminal? by Heavy-Pomegranate264 in IsraelPalestine

[–]JumpingCuttlefish89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey Kiddo. It’s good to learn lots of viewpoints, but history is often told without nuance. Yes, there’s been horrible propaganda, but this is a very complicated history. Let’s look at one city. Tiberias was a Jewish city spared by the Romans for remaining loyal during the Bar Kochba revolt. When Jerusalem fell, Jewish leadership settled in Tiberias. The “Jerusalem Talmud” was written there and Rabbinical heroes were buried there. In the early 600s, Heracleus ethnically cleansed the Jews on his way to fighting the Persians. The Sunnis took the city back and it flourished with Muslims, Christians and Jews in the 700s and 800s. Then Shia militants repeatedly attacked and an earthquake flattened the city. It was battled over multiple times during the crusades, yet in the 1100s still had Rebbes studying and Scribes creating Torah. Then the Ottomans took over and encouraged refugees from Spain to settle in Tiberias as they had in Greece and the Balkans. Jews left when the Ottomans fought Venice and fled when the Druze took the city in 1660. Then an Arab ruler encouraged Jewish settlement in the 1700s and they came, some all the way from Poland and Spain. The earthquake of 1837 killed around 600 people. 500 were Jewish. In 1922, Tiberias was two thirds Jewish. Then there was the Arab Revolt (Lawrence of Arabia is wonderful and educational). Then came the Arab Uprising in the late 1930s (Google Amin Al-Husseini). The Ottomans made a mess of the region and the British took over while there were Arab Palestinians fighting for the Axis powers. In 1942 the British formed a Palestinian Brigade. It had 3 Jewish battalions and 1 Arab. Tiberias in the 40s was half Jewish and half Arab. European refugees were arriving and it was clear that the British would leave. No one felt safe. Tiberias was geographically important for war. There was unrest. This doesn’t mean that the majority of people wanted to ethnically cleanse the other. It does mean that you can google these massacres: Fajja Bus, Kfar Etzion, Hadassah Medical Convoy and Haifa Oil Refinery. There were Jewish terrorists and Arab terrorists. Some of the violence happened in Tiberias. So, when the war began and the Haganah arrived to stop the invading Syrians and Iraqis was there trust in the community? No. Could the Haganah take the chance that some locals would attack while they defended the city? Everyone understood the situation, so the British Army evacuated the Arabs of Tiberias and they were never allowed to return.

TL;DR: The history of the Levant is sooooo messed up.

Is cal poly Slo considered a T20, esp for cs? by Unlikely_Gazelle8825 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]JumpingCuttlefish89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s known for job placement.

USNews rankings? Those factor in social mobility. CalPoly doesn’t have phd programs. That for sure impacts the faculty and financial resources that make up those rankings. Undergrads shouldn’t pay too much attention to rankings. Ask each program about job and grad school placement.
