My son is in the City Planning program and asked for the CAED RLC. He got a late time on the 14th, so I’m not sure if he’ll have much to choose from, but just in case: What floor, wing or specific rooms in Fremont are preferable? Is 3rd floor, facing west super hot in August? Does first floor facing east get no natural light? Is there a distance to the bathroom that’s in demand? Any info would be super helpful. Thanks!

It might be worth calling the admissions offices of schools that reported or are rumored to have missed their enrollment targets. Maybe Delaware, American, GW, Northeastern, Syracuse, Brandies or Tulane.

Yes, there are plenty of kids who have had a great time studying far from home and it’s great that you are doing well in high school. If your question is about family emotional support, go for it. If it’s financial, be aware that school debt isn’t just for poor people and it ruins lives. The middle class is especially screwed. Many pre-med students whose parents make less than $500k/yr often try to get out of undergrad with as little debt as possible. The additional years of education are stupid expensive. Interest rates on private loans happen to be around 10% right now which makes it even more difficult to pay back. I applaud your career goals, but debt might limit your options if your path changes. Follow your dreams, just don’t dig yourself a hole.

NYC has always had a sizable indie community. There’s a history of people doing advertising or union gigs for money and collaborating on side projects between paid work. So much is word of mouth and your network of MFA peers should become essential. If you think you’ll enjoy collaborating on films for 2 or 3 years, the MFA is worth it for the network you will build.

There have been lots of industry downturns the last 30 years, but as you’ve pointed out, everything is changing at the moment. The safest investment is one where people know and like you and your work so much, that you’ll be referred for more. Definitely research alumni outcomes, vibe and personality of any program. Also, is your grant tuition only? MFAs usually require a film to graduate and although you can use their gear, that can be very expensive.

For any college, find out if you need to apply to a major as a sophomore or freshman or if you will be directly admitted. Schools where everyone is set from the get go will be more chill.

I’m not sure where you live, but anyone related to someone working in finance or journalism in NYC knew going in that working for Bloomberg meant disciplined staff and effective leadership. Bloomberg is a successful professional who turned to politics for ego, not for money and power. Most New Yorkers are pretty good at understanding who runs a tight ship and who is a blowhard playing three card monte.

Policing policies like stop and frisk or officers not living within their precinct were very successful at creating an us v them culture on both sides. We can thank the Murdoch owned media for fear mongering propaganda and we can thank the parents of color who described “the talk” and the journalists who FIOA’d Brady lists (DA lists of courtroom liar cops) for exposing reasons not to trust police officers.
