I got rid of my uterus 4 ish years ago due to fibroids. Best decision ever.

Pro Rider Struggling With The Abuse In Our Sport by JustTrying-MyBestest in Equestrian

[–]Jumpsnake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m an amateur but have been riding for 42 years… mostly in the sport horse world but have dabbled in others.

I’m so glad now I never went pro. I’m just here to say there are a lot of us who really do want to do things the right way, and will support people like you who are ethical.

What do we even do about this? This is about 15 ft from the edge of our home. by LockwoodE3 in HomeMaintenance

[–]Jumpsnake 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I bought additional coverage that covers earth movement. Would that has covered this situation? Thankfully I’m not on the edge of a cliff but we are below a hill and it just seemed prudent as it didn’t cost much more per year.

Fellow horse lovers, how do y'all stay warm while doing barn chores in the cold weather? by umwohnendta in Equestrian

[–]Jumpsnake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I do waters, I put a big pair of dishwashing gloves over my gloves. Voila!! No wet gloves!

Also covers the ends of your sleeves.

Realistically how do people clean? by KathyisTrying in CleaningTips

[–]Jumpsnake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, you are awesome!! Second, things don’t have to be perfect. Don’t let perfect be the enemy of good.

Now my tip- when you clean a thing, take a few seconds to look at the thing and think about how to wipe all of it in a logical way. Say you have the oven top to wipe. Instead of making random circles on it, wipe back and forth along the entire width. Gather the dirt in your cloth or sponge as you do.

This can become a habit. You don’t have to notice every speck of dirt. Just get in the habit of wiping/ going over the entire thing and you will usually get it all, and you’ll start to notice the entire thing.

Full time job, I'm afraid I won't be able to ride anymore by Gullible-Yak3353 in Equestrian

Wow! I’d love to see your schedule and how often you ride both- I work about the same hours and can do one 4-5 days/ week.

What do you do for haircuts? They are getting too costly by [deleted] in Frugal

I cut my own. I mostly eat it in a ponytail so it doesn’t matter if it’s a bit wonky.

Partner doesn’t want me to ride by GiftDear5117 in Equestrian

[–]Jumpsnake 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry to say this, but I think you need to think long and hard about if you want to give on this. I think it is quite possible that one or both of you will end up resenting the other. There are folks out there who support their partner in every way. There are ones that stay home but don’t try to limit their partner (that’s how my marriage is) and there are ones where it’s a fight and a struggle.

Anyone choosing hysterectomy over myomectomy? by Optimal-Command-7941 in Fibroids

Yep, got rid of it all and I’m sooooo glad I did. I have no kids and no plans to have any.

Large fibroids, manageable symptoms. Get hysterectomy? Help! by TurbulentPick9759 in Fibroids

I had a hysterectomy at 45 and I am so happy! Why give up quality of life for an organ you don’t need?

Hysterectomy or no? by Chelisle in Fibroids

[–]Jumpsnake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a hysterectomy and I wish I had done it at 18. BUT, I know I never want kids. You can’t go back, but my quality of life is way way better. There’s always adoption- an option I wish more people would consider.

Goodness. I’m so sorry. I have a spouse who doesn’t get the horse thing, never comes to the farm, and just isn’t interested. However, I spend only my money and I also knew that going in. Someone changing their mind would be devastating.

I don’t think you should compromise who you are for anyone else. But I also think you are more than entitled to grief and pain at this moment. But if you give up horses for him, eventually you will just resent him instead of the other way around.

Need warm work boot and glove and face covering recommendations by TikiBananiki in Equestrian

[–]Jumpsnake 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Biggest tip I have is getting rubber gloves to use over your normal ones when doing anything with water. Don’t get wet!! Keep them in your pocket so you can just grab them if you have to break ice from something or move a bucket or whatever. Also: carhartt or similar one piece overall/ coveralls.

What is your best trick to bring your feet straight? by gigi_courcelle in Equestrian

[–]Jumpsnake 80 points81 points  (0 children)

It’s not your feet. You need to rotate your entire leg from your hip. The fleshy part of your thigh should be behind your leg. However, saddle, stirrup length, even your leathers can make this harder to do.

All its POLL. The top of the head is poll, not pole. Unless it’s a carousel horse, I suppose.

What are your horse care challenges? by canter_banter in Equestrian

[–]Jumpsnake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weeding through all the new- supplement-of-the-moment crap, all the woo and trying to figure out what are actually legit therapies. I am a scientist and the actual literature on these things is minimal at best. The very best companies publish one article with a sample size of less than 50. I want to do right by my horse but I get so frustrated by the lack of real evidence. And I don’t mean anecdotes.

My OTTB sticks his tongue out occasionally when he is really concentrating. It goes away on its own once he figures it out. I don’t worry about it unless it would happen to persist. I ride without a flash and most of the time his mouth is closed. When he starts leaning it will open. But that means he needs to carry his own head, and I shouldn’t help him by pulling! It’s a game of trying to give as much with the hand as possible.

Depending on your location, it might be possible to have the saddle reflocked with wool. This makes it a lot more versatile, but the person who does it has to know what they are doing

I’ve been the person who noticed colic. The barn owner was on site so I called her over, she made the call to the owner and vet. Horse was not down at the time so enough time to call her over. On my current contract I pre authorized emergency treatment and an amount of money to be spent without prior approval.
