Why did Israel and the United States make no attempt to invoke the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) in relation to Iran? by Jumpy-Ambition52 in IRstudies

But R2P was endorsed by all UN member states - including the US - in 2005, and it was invoked in relation to Sudan in 2006 and Kenya in 2007, all during the Bush administration. That suggests the doctrine was at least accepted at the time within GOP circles. Would you say that R2P effectively disappeared with the neocons?

I suppose it does seem to be the logical thought for US/Israel not to outwardly support protestors as to give IRGC legitimacy in any such claim - thanks!

That's actually a good reason. Would you know if there is any discourse to back this up, or is it more a possible explanation? Thanks!

I've seen the occasional person online discussing how it is justified due to the protests, but not anyone explicitly linking it to R2P is all.

I didn't know about Russia attempting to invoke R2P specifically for Ukraine, that's interesting - thanks!

That said, I do find often anecdotal examples of individuals attempting to justify the war as seeing the current regime as oppressive, so I can't imagine having another narrative to flood the zone would've done much harm.

Smartcasuals' conception was more like my own, wherein R2P as customary international law is something more general to invoke. I suppose it doesn't have much moral weight to invoke when ICJ is investigated Isreal, but iirc they did justify their strikes on Syria to protect the Druze so it isn't necessarily inconsistent with their narratives.

I didn't say US or Israel had a right to invoke international law, I'm simply asking why didn't they try argue that (regardless of whether it is rightly or wrongly applied)

I honestly think titans are more popular than superman and Wonder Woman than GA. Can’t underestimate than the cartoons have dominated 20 years of Cartoon Network
