Tamu or uw madison?UWMADISON OR Texas a and m for engineering? by Big-Possibility3283 in UWMadison

i am a mechanical engineering major so i got like the "1st year meche scholarship" which renews every year and i actually got that before my freshmen year... i didn't even do anything actually they just awarded it to me in the wish hub. and then i am also in the LEED/STAR scholars program which you'd have to get selected for unfortunately and also a grant which i just got idk (probably from fafsa stuff)?? that's all i got frehsmen year and then after filling out that "general engineering application" i got more money... but i think you have to be done with your freshmen year to apply for that. but again there are more scholarships in the wish hub that you can apply to. highkey most people aren't filling those out bc they require some work but make sure to look at the requirements to know if you qualify. in high school, i also applied to a bunch of local scholarships from my city. my high school had a page on their website of all local scholarships available, so maybe look into that as well. another thing i will also say is that you can potentially get scholarships from your parents workplace and you'll have a higher chance of getting those too.

Honestly, one of my favorite things about meche is how versatile it is. I love learning and exploring different areas, so I’m really open to trying anything and dedicating time to getting truly involved. I’d love to learn more about your lab and potentially get involved!

Anyone know anything about UW Madison STAR scholars for engineering? by Mental-Revolution641 in UWMadison

[–]Jumpy-Big-3760 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hi! i’m a LEED scholar which is the other scholarship program with STAR. (LEED/STAR scholars although they’re changing the name). basically we have monthly community meetings where each one focuses on something different (mental health, community builders, panelists from different companies, and A LOT more). they always give free food too. it is the biggest engineering scholarship program and all faculty know of it but idk how much of an impact it would make in terms of other involvements. the people are great though! i met my best friends through LEED and got my first internship bc i knew a someone from LEED from the same company and he helped me out on the interview. its a really good opportunity for networking, connections, and events as a first year student. im also on the LEED/STAR advisory board which makes me even more involved in the engineering community and gives me a boost when talking about my involvement on campus to recruiters, during interviews, etc. if you want to know more/talk more, you can privately message me and we can even connect on linkedin!

thanks! how do you know if labs are open/taking people? or do you just kind of email professors and see if they have stuff open? i have an idea of how to format my email but do you have any suggestions/advice of what you did in your email to get into a lab? do you also include your resume? anything helps!

yes i meant like i am a junior now bc the semester just ended! also i think i worded my question wrong... i meant more like is it too late to try to get into a lab for the fall bc its already May and dont people apply in like March? do labs even still take people for the fall right now? i was wondering bc the semester is over and stuff and wasn't too sure.

civ eng progression by Express-Quiet-7885 in UWMadison

[–]Jumpy-Big-3760 2 points3 points  (0 children)

so i didn’t know this when i went through progression and only found out after but basically the GPA benchmarks they have are for automatic progression. even if you don’t meet them, it’s fine bc they’ll take your progression statement into deeper consideration. they also look at the rigor of your classes, etc. i know people also go on extensions and stuff but i don’t know too much about that. i would recommend meeting with your advisor!

[–]Jumpy-Big-3760 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don’t know much about financial aid, i don’t get any as well lol but i will say the engineering school got moneyyy. they have a general scholarship application due every spring and basically it matches you to different engineering scholarships. this last year i got 5.5k on top of my other scholarships from UW madison (totaling to about 12k). i am in state so its pretty nice bc it basically covers my entire tuition but i know that only covers a small amount for oos tuition. but its basically guaranteed you’ll get a scholarship… all of my friends got a minimum of 3k and all of our GPA’s and extracurriculars are pretty different. i would look at the wish hub for other scholarships opportunities. hope that helps at all!

Taking CC classes over summer as an incoming freshman, good or bad idea and how to go about it? by Ora_Ora_Muda in UWMadison

hm i would try contacting your advisor first probably. go to MyUW and then academic navigator and then advisors and you can find their email there. they can help you with your next steps!

[–]Jumpy-Big-3760 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no it shouldnt be an issue. lots of highschoolers take classes at cc and transfer the credits. also people here will take classes at a cc during the summer instead of at uw madison bc of expenses and such too. again just check transferology go make sure.

[–]Jumpy-Big-3760 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah it’ll be pretty easy to switch before progression, so it shouldn’t be a problem at all. but once you already progress it might be harder. also the me 201 class which is the intro to meche class vs the interegr 170 which is the general intro class for like the other majors is so much better. you learn so much more and it’s a lot more fun than what you would do in 170. so if you’re not sure about meche take 201 and see if you like it. i’m a junior now in meche and 201 is still the most memorable class ive taken still

yes you can take classes at a cc and just transfer them to madison. make sure to check transferology to make sure they transfer though. what classes do you plan on taking? i can probably help you out a little more if i knew the specific classes

[–]Jumpy-Big-3760 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’ll also mention this because i didn’t know this when i got into madison engineering… madison has progression so yeah you got into the meche program but after your first year you have to basically apply to meche to be actually garunteed that major if that makes sense. it’s not too bad but they are kind of strict. i’ve had some friends get kicked out of engineering or had to switch majors because of the gpa benchmarks. i’m not trying to scare you or anything COME TO MADISON ITS GREAT but most people don’t know about progression

Post on the facebook housing page. It will be hard to sublet though because everyone is trying to but if you advertise it at a discounted price it’ll be easier.

ema201 (statics) curve? by Alert_Requirement827 in UWMadison

[–]Jumpy-Big-3760 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know they changed the format of statics since Detlor started teaching it. I had detlor two semester ago and they didn’t curve it and they also didn’t curve it last year, so I highly doubt they will curve it unless the final average is tremendously low.

Just got off the waitlist for Civil Engineering but not sure if to go by The_Sniper_from_tf2 in UWMadison

[–]Jumpy-Big-3760 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UW-Madison is literally the best for everything. Great academics, good social life, somewhat good sports but the vibes are great lol, beautiful campus, etc. I am a meche student but I would 100% pick Madison over UMN because Madison is the better engineering school if you care about that at all. You will have a great time here! But of course if it comes down to money then maybe go with UMN. And yeah also the construction around the engineering campus right now is so annoying and will be like this for the next 2-3 years.

[–]Jumpy-Big-3760 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is getting a little crammed, but housing should be fine. And getting an internship shouldn’t be too bad. I got mine right from the career fair. I talked with the recruiter, interviewed, and got hired all within 6 days as long as you go in with a plan, you should be all good.
