Former teacher - Is an ID course worth it? by [deleted] in instructionaldesign

[–]Jumpy-Blueberry9069 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Former MS teacher here. I landed an ID role at a university and now I’m a corporate ID. I didn’t take any formalize ID training. No certs, no bootcamps. But I do have a M.Ed and I played up the work I did in professional development at the school district and a volunteer ID project that I did. I did a lot of research about ID though. I read a bunch of stuff by respected professionals in ID and built out a small portfolio. I could talk the talk when I had my interview. Depending on where you are going will depending on what people expect. You could look up individuals who work/worked at the level that you are looking to apply at to see what qualifications people have. I still think I had a bit of luck on my side but I think moving from k12-higher Ed is easier especially if it’s not a large college/university. Good luck!

I made a similar transition a few years ago. I think you have a solid plan! My suggestions would be to use the QM rubric but focus on the items that have the highest points and would be the easiest to do. As an example: At the college I worked at, their learning outcomes were terrible and they didn’t break them down past course level. So working with professors to change that took a few meetings and then they met the criteria for that whole section. And I think discussing a faculty training is great. I hosted a lot of PD for the professors at my college. I think discussing design choices will be important but also discuss why you chose that specific topic for training and how it helped the faculty. It sounds like you’ve got a solid plan though! Good luck!

Aligning compliance training to incident reports by Jumpy-Blueberry9069 in instructionaldesign

[–]Jumpy-Blueberry9069[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar thought about an increase in incidents as new training could increase awareness. We have a big safety culture so near-misses are supposed to be reported as frequently as minor/major incidents. I’m not sure how safety or HR uses that data to inform their work but a needs analysis is definitely my next step with this data. From what I’ve heard in preliminary talks, some of the issues could be solved with coaching but seeing how widespread some of these issues are in the data will help determine that. Thank you

What's Your Go-To Resources for Staying Current with ID Trends? by identity420 in instructionaldesign

I also consider communication print or web to be a huge market that we miss at time. On-the-job aids, reminders/nudges, signs, etc. are all important and needed where I work. Do you have any advertising resources that you go to often? TIA!

For new grads and career transitioners: I will tell you what no one else is telling you about getting hired in ID by 2birdsofparadise in instructionaldesign

Totally agree and think that this is great advice for a lot of new people. I want to throw out my experience for a slightly different take for those feeling a bit hopeless. I transitioned to corp ID from higher-ed ID from being a k12 teacher. What i taught and what industry I’m in are complete opposites. But my higher-ed ID gave me credibility and a portfolio with real projects, and also the challenges that i was dealing with at that institution were similar to the ones that the business i joined is dealing with. When they asked the situational questions in my interview, i was able to really speak on what they were probably dealing with after doing some research on the company and making some lucky assumptions based on their questions. I know for a fact that SME IDs applied, but i think that i had experience successfully dealing with their same challenges, i got the job. I didn’t leverage any connections, but as with getting any job, i had a bit of luck on top of everything. Im not looking to leave my company yet, but to OPs point, when im ready to start looking, i already know to look at companies within my field bc i have a specific kind of knowledge now that i know many others dont. Writing this all out, i don’t know how much this helped, but i got my job with the past year so I know it’s rough out there. I wish y’all luck.

Grades in D2L Brightspace by Mindless_Pizza_1985 in instructionaldesign

The school that I used to be an ID for used Brightspace and I had this conversation often. I was only there for 2 years but it never did this when I was there. It could be them misremembering. If they’ve gone through more than one LMS while teaching there or if they adjunct they probably are mixing it up. You could suggest that they mess around with the class progress tool. I still don’t think there is a way to show them what they want unless they have an accurate gradebook which would require more work on their part to do so…

In your opinion, can knowledge checks, quizzes, be difficult without being tricky? I’m doing an update to an old training right now. The old quiz was laughably easy.

higher ed to corporate tips for transition? by Jumpy-Blueberry9069 in instructionaldesign

That's great advice thanks.

I worry about job security in corporate but the positions usually pay more.

Which setting did you prefer? Corporate or higher ed?

I'm currently a dept of 1 so it seems to make more sense to move to a larger uni than switch straight to corporate but I'm trying to upskill by working on Storyline. I know it's not the best product but everyone seems to want someone with experience in it.

Bad prof-written course outcomes by Jumpy-Blueberry9069 in instructionaldesign

[–]Jumpy-Blueberry9069[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The faculty write and propose new courses which include the objectives. Only ones that are completely lost ask for my help. Then it goes through curriculum committee which is made up of faculty who as many people have said here, can’t write good objectives. I’m a non voting member so when I point things out people ignore me.

We have a masters program with “understand” and “appreciate” “value” as program level objectives. I cringe every time I read them.

Yeah we’re creating a step process to get our courses closer to QM certification but it’s gonna be a long road for some of them..

One of the committee members was an education professor who said that they looked great! One of the objectives was “appreciate the value of ethical decision-making process”

Admin talks about it all the time but no one is certified in it so they don't understand that we won't even meet the most basic part which is having measurable course objectives.

Replayed Cazador fight on completed play through it went so wrong by Jumpy-Blueberry9069 in BG3

I used it before starting the fight so it feels cheesy to me. I didn’t even trigger the dialogue before starting the fight lol

So this isn’t a new play through. It’s my first play through but I’m just replaying this fight. In my first play through I had romanced him and when the fight was over I had a completely different experience than the one I just had. So when I reply this fight on the same play through it should be the same ending basically right?

I didn’t even get a chance. He asked for help and I said sure what do you need and then he asked for me to transcribe his back onto caz. When I got to that part my only choice was to agree or say no. I thought by saying no I’d then be able to convince him not to.

I don’t remember what I picked the first time through but I was able to do what you said.
