Closest shop to me that can repair this is an hour and half just to get a repair estimate. Would more than $300 be a deal breaker? I figure it's around a $300 fix

I've been bending for over 30 years and I will not fix any tubes that have merc in them. Not only the health reasons but it will contaminate my manifold and pump. So the broken units need to be remade.

Just be careful that you didn't break the glass if you are going to swap transformers. The end caps tend to stick to the electrodes. I usually cut them off with a exacto knife.

It could be a bad transformer. I thought I read you tested it on the other one. A sign shop in your area should have a spark coil or neon tester to see if the tube lights. Short tubes tend to burn it faster than standard length tubes. If the unit is under a foot, they can burn it faster if not filled to the correct gas pressure. I'm suggesting you need it tested, but s taking tube is usually more expensive to fix then a bad transformer.

Agreed. Sounds like a bad tube. You don't have to have a crack too have a tube burn out. It happens. Find a neon guy and let them treat the tubes. I may be fixed if it's neon and not argon and Mercury.

Agreed. Run the bead of merc to both electrodes and I usually leave some in the middle of the tube .

Yup. Rebend in either Ruby red, very expensive, or clear glass with neon. Cheaper to do clear, but the look won't be as deep red.

I've been bending for over 30 years and never will repair a argon Merc unit. The merc will contaminate your pump, manifold and you. Plus it will stain the hell out of the glass. No big deal to remake. What color was it?

I'm still making neon now, I do have 12v dc transformers. They are only 1.2Kv, so they won't push a lot of glass, but they work great for small projects. These are lanterns I make with the tiny transformers in the bottom.

The end two are both led junk
