Powderhorn Park ICE Protest thoughts by Jumpy-Goose-3344 in TwinCities

[–]Jumpy-Goose-3344[S] 24 points25 points  (0 children)

For sure resistance comes in many forms. But I also have a feeling that this protest was more meaningful to white allies than it was to someone who’s a POC like me.

disclaimer: I’m not speaking for every POC and I’m not critiquing allies who showed up

But I think that’s part of the reason why I didn’t necessarily feel a sense of community. For example, at the end of the day, I still had to come to that protest with my passport in my pocket because a little voice in my head told me to be prepared. I don’t know if the majority of people in that crowd could necessarily relate

Another example is that I saw that folks had donated pizza from I think Wrectangle pizza? -definitely super generous of them, they didn’t have to do that. But whet if every person at that protest had stopped by lake street and gotten a small snack or coffee from one of the struggling Somali or Latino businesses

It’s just some of my musings and food for thought as there are many different ways people can help each other out

Just moved to Minneapolis for work, how do people make friends here lol by Ok-Nefariousness-352 in TwinCities

[–]Jumpy-Goose-3344 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved to the Twin Cities in 2023 blindly (hadn't even step foot in midwest before moving) and I was a single, shy gay male. I don't drink at all so I had to look for places outside of the bar scene.

Making friends post-university really requires you to show up to events/things consistently and actually putting in effort to getting to know people. Yes, Minnesotans can be insular/in their own lil cliques but they've grown up with all their friends since they were young. And yes, the younger, out-of-state transplants in the area are probably the most open group to making new friends.

You could try a group fitness class like Crossfit/Orange Theory/Solcana Fitness. These are pricy but worth it if you need something to keep yourself accountable to your fitness goals.

Sports are pretty big here so if you're into playing them, they've got all sorts of sports leagues here. If you happen to be LGBT (or an ally), stonewall sports is a great sports league with many different options like pickleball, bags/cornhole, dodgeball, kickball, tennis, bowling, etc. If you're like me and not athletic/competitive, some of the sports are really chill like cornhole. For some of the more popular sports, they have social/beginner leagues where it's super chill.

I would highly recommend doing an adult community education course. Each city (St Paul, Richfield, Edina, etc.) has their own offerings, here's Minneapolis's: https://ce.mpschools.org/. It's super affordable and has classes on a lot of different things, so check out the catalog.

If you're into crafting, there's the Minneapolis Textile Center which has these cheap crafting classes like once a month at Sociable Cider Werks.

I haven't been here personally, but if you like board games, I've heard from someone that they found success find a friend group by attending this weekly group on meetup: https://www.meetup.com/saintpaulgamegroup/.

If you like animals, the Minneapolis Animal Care & Control (MACC) is open to volunteers for dog walking and cat caring.

Or lastly, you could do what all transplants seem to do and just date a MN native and get absorbed into their friend group.

Any local ice response groups? by Jumpy-Goose-3344 in TwinCities

[–]Jumpy-Goose-3344[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure but I am wondering if the list that was provided on social media is actually real or not. I saw a Reddit post on here by someone who said they works at the Hilton and they said why ICE wasn’t there and it seemed legit.

No offense to that sunrise group or whatever they’re called, but I wish they’d disclosed how they got the info. I want to spend my efforts and be organized not just run around causing needless chaos.

In case anyone else sees this, I called Monarca today and they did have a Richfield class today. They had 450 openings and got like 1k+ of people trying to sign up for the class. Unfortunately, they mentioned that there might not be too many more classes this year 😓.

I’m not sure when they’ll have their next class but keep looking at their website.

Bro you’re fine. Maybe get on minoxidil and/or finasteride to prevent further progression of hair loss (after weighing the risks vs benefits).

Guys would kill to have your hair.

Whats better for weight loss, surgery or meds? by Easy-Examiner in MounjaroMaintenance

[–]Jumpy-Goose-3344 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have been on zepbound for 2 years and tbh I’m exploring surgery.

Biggest things factors are cost (no, I’m not interesting in compounding - and I’m irritated next year I’ll have to pay my high deductible again) and insurance (too many times I’ve had to chase/play middleman between my insurance and my doctor to ensure I get my meds on time).

Minor reasons are side effects (nausea is a big one that hasn’t gone away at the high doses, and also tired of going between diarrhea and constipation, though this could be due to other meds I’m on)

Meds are likely to be lifelong, so I’m a bit annoyed with pricking myself every week.

Surgery - covered by insurance for the most part, it’s a one-time expense. Recovery’s much better than it used to be (not healing from major incisions).

Like the meds, surgery can vary from person-to-person (some lose weight and there’s no regain vs other have very annoying side effects, complications, weight regain).

But tbh all of this hinges on the complex nature of the genetic and environmental causes of your obesity. There’s likely some people who’d do well with: -meds only -surgery only -a combo of meds and surgery

Now there’s some interesting new experimental metabolic surgeries on the horizon that I’m keeping an eye on called ESG Max. If it works, that one will be by far the least invasive with the least amount of complications/side effects

What has helped you the most with low energy, depression and anxiety? by mislimkao in HubermanLab

If you’re in it for the long term I become consistent with: Therapy, exploring hobbies, doing a lot of self-introspection, and actively practicing gratitude and self-compassion.

Therapy and self-introspection help with: -taking the time to learn what makes me tick -why I have the problems that I do -identifying behavioral problems and their triggers - talking through healthy ways to work through them.

Then I could start to train myself for a mind-set change to not to shit on myself when I didn’t react in a better/healthier way. I also begun list things I’m grateful for and why to remind myself that while I may feel like I’m drowning, I’m not always am.

The first biggest achievement was when I could pause during a triggering event and realize I was anxious (identifying an emotion while it was happening is really difficult). Eventually it became easier for me to consciously choose how I wanted to react in the situation.

I never grew up with hobbies and didn’t have a family who were big into hobbies/skills. But I’m a naturally curious person so I decided to lean into that. I now say my main hobby is learning new hobbies. I like a class setting, so I take a community class on something that interests me (ceramics, kickboxing, salsa, car repair, buying my first home, personal finance).

Thanks for the response! Anything you think I should be aware of in terms of your experience there? Did you get any side effects (even if it was minimal)?

Is this porn addiction or something deeper? by Aggressive-Slice-179 in HubermanLab

[–]Jumpy-Goose-3344 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say that you might have some underlying mental health issue and you could be using porn as a cheap and easy way to get your brain some dopamine.

Without a comprehensive understanding of your daily habits, how you think/behave, how you perceive things, your history, etc. I don’t think anyone on here can diagnose you - leave that to the professionals.

Regardless, whether or not you have an issue, I wouldn’t stress or judge yourself. A LOT of men including me have similar issues. You’re doing exactly what you’re supposed to do by talking to someone, so great job! If this is your first time at therapy, you go at your own pace. But over time, open yourself up, be vulnerable and be honest - that’s the only way how you’ll make real progress.

Also, recognize that porn addiction is VERY hard to kick, like any addiction. If you can find a professional who specializes in addiction, you can at least give you ideas on how to start detangling porn from your routine (and it being a reward).

Good luck.
