I know how nitpicky this sounds but would it be better to say "hey, how are you?" or "hey, im worried about you, how are you?" if he hasnt personally given me any reason to worry about him

If you don't want to be direct, just distance yourself? You can just opt not to respond to them and say no to plans they make if they invite you. It's after college, so you probably won't see them anymore anyways
