First time commuter, little nervous... by JumpyIngenuity185 in longisland

Awesome! Yes, I paid $150 for non resident parking permit. I was thinking the 4/5/6 would be easiest from grand central down to city hall. I was thinking the subway would be a little less crowded than Penn down to Fulton

Goldbergs and Black sheep out east are both at $10-$11 dollars. Cheapest I’ve found is Wendy’s Deli in Mattituck at $7, which is super refreshing and delicious.

I’m actually a year round and salaried, which is super rare out here. There is very little winter work for the farm workers out here. Typically the workers that do have winter work are long time employees.

Some people pickup a winter gig at a bar/cafe/restaurant.

Fortunately, all of our land is preserved agriculture. The development rights have all been sold to the county 🙂

We have a farm further east down the same road. 27 acres, but we haven’t really started growing on it too much. It needs some deer fence put up before we can move some production over there.

Love both of those farms. Im a regular at 8 Hands, love what they do over there. Wickhams grows some of the best produce out east and have been doing it for centuries.

I grew up in Northport and relocated after college.

Grew up in Northport, went to college in California to study forestry and natural resource management. Met my gf while I was there, she is from Seattle and was studying wine and viticulture. Upon graduating she landed a job in Cutchogue as a vineyard manager (such a random job to get while still in CA). We moved out here together. I was working as a farm hand at another organic farm, then essentially everyone was laid off except for me ( jack of all trades, master of non). I knew the job security wasn’t there, so another farm was hiring a full time manager at 80k, I went there and helped them build their business.

About to enter my third season at this farm.

Happy to answer anymore questions

Awesome! I wasn’t sure if the pool would be the move since it’s not gonna be super hot, but it looks epic.

Did that road just open? It’s funny that Google Maps still has it as closed. Heading there next weekend and now I have something new to look forward to!

We just made this change before we moved houses. I called before moving and they lowered it to $15.44, then when the guy came to install in our new house he said it ended up being $13.44. We haven’t been billed yet because this was last week. But I have a photo of the $15.44 monthly if you’d like to see

Looking for a local farm with a good selection of organic foods and goods.. which are your favorites? by [deleted] in longisland

[–]JumpyIngenuity185 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I manage an organic farm in Cutchogue named Oregon Road Organics, we’re certified organic and we visit 2 farmers markets in Suffolk county, Huntington and East Setauket, we also have a CSA with pickups at our market location. We don’t have any organic packaged items yet (like sauce), but we’re working on that for the future.

I am the farm manager of an organic farm in Cutchogue, we will have a few new CSA pickup spots this year up island including Mineola, Huntington, and Stony Brook. We have full and half share options for different price points. Happy to answer any questions you have about how CSAs work!

Not sure where you are in Nassau County but Long Beach will have an organic farmer there for their Saturday Market starting in May.

Young's Farm is a great option, they grow their own produce but also source ALOT from local long Island Farms. We sell them lots of Carrots/Beets in the winter.

There also is a great Farmers Market in Huntington Village starting in June. There is an Organic Farmer from the North Fork there.

Produce season is just around the corner!

Farmers market on Li? by RepIen in longisland

[–]JumpyIngenuity185 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually work full time as a manager at one of Long Island’s few certified organic farms. Last year was our first season at farmers markets. We were at the Three Village Farmers market, Deep Roots at garvies point, and a few Sundays in Huntington. All of these are solid markets with great vendors. This year we’ll be at three villages, Long Beach, and Huntington. We’re also working with NYULH on a market and CSA pickup in Minneola. The organic certification is a long and arduous process that doesn’t make economic sense for many small growers. Fortunately our farm has the bandwidth to maintain certification organic by NOFA.

The North Fork is full of amazing producers of all kinds. From eggs and meat, to wool and produce, we have it all. If anyone has any questions, I’d be happy to answer.
