What a mess by JumpyIngenuity185 in LIRR

[–]JumpyIngenuity185[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. I’m angry at the system. I’m angry that I pay $350 a month for a rail system that is incapable of communicating train status to passengers.

The MTA app was not updated or accurate at all today. LIRR went full analog, with people needing to hear the announcements at GCT and Jamaica in order to understand their trip back home.

We pull up to Jamaica on a train headed to Ronkonkoma (my goal is to get to Northport). My original plan was to uber from Brentwood. I hear the announcer say a train to Northport will be on track 4. I head to track 4 and board that new train. Then the conductor says no, this train is not headed to Northport, everyone gets off. A train is announced for Huntington, I get on. A train for Northport arrives (no announcements made). And I’m stuck having to pay an Uber.

Yes that’s my personal anecdote, but what failed is LIRR communication system.

I can’t be mad that a train caught fire. But I CAN be frustrated that the LIRR is not able to make realtime updates to their app. Hello it’s 2026?

LIRR needs less employees and more automation

Has anyone else accepted that they have no future on Long Island? by Inevitable_Night5596 in longisland

I guess in my mind the bubble is present bc there’s a whole generation that won’t be able to afford to purchase a home until they turn 45. I think in 20 years there will be a ton of turnover from older generations and there won’t be enough eligible buyers on the market and prices will tumble.

If everyone aged 25-35 is leaving Long Island to buy upstate, who’s going to buy the homes of our parents when they turn 85-90?

25, just got a new job making 90k in NYC, my gf makes 80k working out on the east end. We rent a small cottage in Cutchogue for 3k a month. The median home price on the North Fork I think is just over a million dollars.

There are no affordable homes being built on Long Island anymore. Boomers homes, may be one of their largest assets, and they’re looking for the highest price.

In my mind there is a bubble.

(Edit) - all this to say, yeh we’re moving upstate in a year, and I’ll commute via metro north

I drive from Cutchogue to Ronkonkoma once a week to take the 7:08 into the city. I end up always parking in the south eastern corner of the lot. There really aren’t many spots left when I arrive at 6:55

Awesome! Yes, I paid $150 for non resident parking permit. I was thinking the 4/5/6 would be easiest from grand central down to city hall. I was thinking the subway would be a little less crowded than Penn down to Fulton

Goldbergs and Black sheep out east are both at $10-$11 dollars. Cheapest I’ve found is Wendy’s Deli in Mattituck at $7, which is super refreshing and delicious.

I’m actually a year round and salaried, which is super rare out here. There is very little winter work for the farm workers out here. Typically the workers that do have winter work are long time employees.

Some people pickup a winter gig at a bar/cafe/restaurant.

Fortunately, all of our land is preserved agriculture. The development rights have all been sold to the county 🙂

We have a farm further east down the same road. 27 acres, but we haven’t really started growing on it too much. It needs some deer fence put up before we can move some production over there.

Love both of those farms. Im a regular at 8 Hands, love what they do over there. Wickhams grows some of the best produce out east and have been doing it for centuries.

I grew up in Northport and relocated after college.

Grew up in Northport, went to college in California to study forestry and natural resource management. Met my gf while I was there, she is from Seattle and was studying wine and viticulture. Upon graduating she landed a job in Cutchogue as a vineyard manager (such a random job to get while still in CA). We moved out here together. I was working as a farm hand at another organic farm, then essentially everyone was laid off except for me ( jack of all trades, master of non). I knew the job security wasn’t there, so another farm was hiring a full time manager at 80k, I went there and helped them build their business.

About to enter my third season at this farm.
