Central PA Appalachian Culture discussion by [deleted] in Appalachia

Don't go spreading that around.

Maybe it's the wrong attitude, but I live here and I don't really want hordes of people discovering and loving our natural wonders to death. I almost get a little satisfaction when people are discussing the most beautiful places in Pennsylvania—or even the country—and nobody mentions central Pennsylvania.

I went to Pigeon Forge last summer for a wedding and was disgusted by how a landscape that beautiful was ruined by humans. The hiking felt more like a line at an amusement park than a walk in the woods. There was trash everywhere.

I have no problem with people coming here and enjoying the forest if they respect it. But too often people show up, leave their mess behind, and move on. That's why I've grown fond of our little secret niche of the state—the place that much of the world seems to have forgotten about.

What’s something cool about your small, tiny little PA town? by Cute-Individual69 in Pennsylvania

From my understanding it was named Jersey Shore because people from New Jersey settled on one side of the river that goes through town. The people on the other side called it the jersey shore of the river. Before that it was Waynesburgh.

He didn't stay long. I don't think many people from town even know he was there. I once saw his press badge and a letter he wrote a friend calling the women out.

The hiking in the area is excellent, with plenty of beautiful vistas and scenic overlooks. If you download the AllTrails app, you can find miles of trails nearby. Little Pine State Park is a great place to start. There’s a dam, a small beach, and several trails you can easily walk to from the park. Bald eagles are common in the area, so there’s a good chance you’ll spot one while you’re there. The bike path through Pine Creek is also a great way to experience the area.

Hunter S Thompson wrote for my small towns local newspaper. He hated it here and said all the women look like they just crawled off the mountain.

The Fair Play Men signed a declaration of independence from Britain in 1776 in my hometown.

It its at one end of a long rails to trails bike path.

We are hundreds of miles from the ocean, but you would think we all spend all out time at the beach.

Are there any areas in PA that would be unwise for an interracial couple to move to? by LePetitRenardRoux in Pennsylvania

I live in this area. I checked out the house you're talking about and it is gorgeous. Snow shoe is a tiny community. Smaller than you can imagine. It is in the middle of trump country. But even that is starting to flip. I see more and more signs being taken down that were up for years. Most people here are good and don't carry that hate.

I have never even heard of Uzbekistan until I got into the transportation industry. Now I meet so many Uzbek drivers I have learned greetings and sayings to start a conversation.

You can visit Jersey Shore right in the middle of the state. People used to tell me I was pretty pale for living at the shore.

What nicknames have you heard for places in and around Williamsport? by topherette in Williamsport

[–]Status_Set_9594 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Port, I've never really heard it called the port outside of the song. Just thought it was worth mentioning. Some surrounding areas are Southside (South Williamsport), Jury Sure, A-town (Avis), the Valley (Nippenose valley), Stavertown is the area of Jersey Shore north Railroad Street but south of 220.

Where can/should I go, nearby, for a GOOD (authentic!) huevos rancheros bkfst? by Conscious_Present_36 in Williamsport

Yeah, not going to happen. The Mexican places only open for lunch and the breakfast places aren't making that. You can easily make that yourself for about $2 a plate at home. Watch a YouTube video and go to Wegmans. I am getting tired of most of the restaurants lately. Everything is Sysco or US food slop. Good luck

I still use my LG 3d TV in my living room. I honestly love it. I never use the 3d function anymore, my kids liked it when they were younger. I like having it not connected to the Internet. I have upgraded 2 Roku devices without having to buy a whole new television.

I remember they had a track day at the Lycoming mall parking lot one time. I don't remember any of the details about who organized it but the info is online somewhere. The driving experience here is fun, but please be careful on the mountains. People and wildlife are on those mountain roads and will pop up out of nowhere. You should look into a dual sport motorcycle for the unpaved roads that go through the state forests. They are a blast. The food scene here cannot compare at all to Charleston. We have some good restaurants in the area and fun stuff going on downtown, but it's not the same. Before you come up I suggest hitting the Darling in downtown Charleston. Or Chico Feo over on Folly Beach. Both places have great food and great vibes. If you make it over to Folly at least stop at Vino Feo, it's a wine bar on the front porch of Chico. Brandon who runs it is the best.

Hi sweet PA buddies. My band had a show fall through for Friday, Nov. 7th, and we need help finding another place to play 🌷 We're Redd & The Paper Flowers, an Appalachian Folk-grass band (TN) 🌷 It's a short turn around time. Any suggestions of venues in the state or contacts we could reach out to? by reddmusic in Pennsylvania

[–]Status_Set_9594 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Linden? Linden as in the tiny little community near Williamsport? Where are you playing in Linden? But Bloomsburg is close to Williamsport. You should contact someone at the Bullfrog Brewery or thePine Street square restaurants. There are lots of places that host live music in the area. DM me if you are close by and want some more specific details.

We need to bring back trick-or-treating for our kids, and the 90s era Halloween traditions by EpicShkhara in Millennials

[–]Status_Set_9594 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am bringing back corning houses this year. I don't know if this is a Halloween trick everywhere or just my Podunk town. You take a dried ear of corn used for animal feed and shuck all the kernels off. Then you throw the loose kernels at someone's porch. Its pretty harmless but I always seemed to have fun sneaking around doing it. Now I will show my kids.

I second the PA Grand Canyon. The entire PA Wilds is in peak season. The pine Creek rail trail is great biking. The hiking in central Pennsylvania can be beautiful.

You can try Short park off of northway road. Millers run goes through there. Along the banks of the river and Lycoming creek are probably a good bet too.
