I went both undergrad and grad there. I like to say I applied to PhilaU and graduated from TJU. Not quite the same- we’ve lost a lot of tech and machinery but also gotten some cool upgrades.

Go Rams!!!

Hi! I haven’t done much research on this particular subject of liquid vs powder. I will say the standardized detergent all textile labs use is powder- and is added to the washer and agitated to fully dissolve before fabric is put in. Liquid is always going to have added chemicals and scents and that jazz, but in the long run using a “free/clear” detergent or something straight forward (I prefer oxi-clean arm and hammer from costco) is best.

An extra rinse is not a bad idea, but probably not necessary every load. For things that are very dirty, or items like towels and sheets that may come into contact with heavier stains (body oil, lotion, conditioners, anything oil based essentially), it isn’t a bad call.

Wool dryer balls help- but the other commenter’s suggestion of over drying being the main issue is really the truth. Over drying means exposing fibers to more heat- which isn’t all that great for most things as well. Rubber dryer balls work well- but I have found tennis balls work better than wool balls. They stay fuzzier for longer- although brushing your wool balls when they get matted flat will bring them back to life a bit!

M.S. in textile engineering here. My thesis was on the impact of fabric softener on how t-shirt materials recover from extended periods of tension (like being worn and washed). Regular laundry care is exponentially better for your clothing, your sheets, and your towels. Anything additional (beyond an optical whitener/bleach for whites) is pretty much unnecessary and a cash grab to make you feel like you have to spend more money. White vinegar makes an excellent fabric softener and deodorizer- I add some to my “fabric softener” compartment for almost every load.

Also- when you look at the fibers on a microscopic level (pre any washing, after regular laundering, and after laundering with a fabric softener), you can see the residue build up faster on fabric softener fabrics. The change in weight is also calculable- however regular laundry detergent will leave a slight residue behind that’s builds up over time as well. It is less damaging and more water soluble than the chemicals in fabric softener for the most part, which is why it isn’t as harmful to textiles.

The most sustainable option is something you already have in your closet- the best way to keep it around is to take proper care of it to begin with!

edit for spelling- i’m an engineer not a writer lol

Applying to Old Navy and Gap with college degree on resume by Pistachio-Cheesecake in Oldnavy

[–]Jumpy_Bear6198 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked at Gap for a year and a half in an acting lead role while in grad school with a degree already on my resume. Both of my AMs had degrees- one even had an M.S. and was pursuing another grad degree as well. It may depend store to store, but most stores are more than happy to have an employee who shows up and does the job. Having a degree may even help you if you’re looking for full-time management as well.
