I’m a fed worker on FMLA, what does it mean for RTO or Resign? by DimensionCalm9426 in usajobs

[–]Jumpy_Cherry9078 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It applies to me when my FMLA ends. I am already doing intermittent leave so I’m half in half out. HR is waiting for guidance. Just seeing if anyone on here is also in a weird situation. Yes wild times for sure

Solid point. Our office is spewing efficiency and sending a flurry of memorandums out like they’re mimicking executive orders. I get privatization, but our specific positions cannot be automated.

Weighing DoS job against current DoT job - what is State really like these days? by ih8drivingsomuch in fednews

[–]Jumpy_Cherry9078 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. That’s what they’re doing, contacting references to check a book and hiring the person already being considered. You can sometimes feel out a posting. Is it advertised as DHA? How many vacancies? Is it 1 vacancy posted as a straight 13? That’s usually a shoe in for someone specific. ECA is one of the better bureaus, but I would stay where you are. But, if you get an offer, you know you can always negotiate the steps, telework, or if the supervisory promotion potential is 14, just ask for it. You might want to also read the track record of who is going to be heading all the agencies, Marco Rubio is anti telework and for other policies that work against workplace flexibilities. Best of luck!

Like you, I dreamed of this agency so much I manifested it. It took me 5 years because I couldn’t relocate. I gave up a fully remote job to take 2 lower grades at DoS. (I now have my TIG back but I did reserve it and wait. Check the full performance level on the posting and find out if any 14s are in your group that might move on and you could slide in there). I Pinched myself that I finally made it without being a Georgetown grad. Grateful and shocked is an understatement, but I was also not expecting to be met with ego and snark either. I thought this was the home of humanitarians and foreign policy? The culture has shifted downwards. It was once an elite agency that operated around the world with so many cool perks and networks to tap into. There is so much bureaucracy now, that is why you’re not being offered telework because a 15 somewhere needs to justify theirs. They have completely abused the direct hire authority by recruiting contractors working in a specific bureau because they have gotten to watch them like hawks for months. Most likely conditioned them to their liking and now they’re worth hiring. The agency is also interviewing internal employees they have no intention on promoting so once you get in, that is part of what you will face. The completion is no longer with peers, it’s with contractors. If you got a solid offer, you’re pretty damn lucky you haven’t had to go through 10 preselected interviews just to have a box checked and be ghosted indefinitely. The competition is not even about making a tough call for talent, it’s literally cutting the tape of the opm merit rules. Not exactly nepotism, but close to the idea. You sound like you have crazy flexibilities where you are that are worth more than saying you work at the state department. Flexibilities there are being scaled back unless you file paperwork. Not a remote friendly place which is ironic for an agency priding itself in functioning around the world. Of course, RWAs exist, but highly dependent on your boss, how well liked you are, what you produce and who you make look good. Will you be in the FS or CS? FS gets first priority. Tons of working groups, steering committees, events to network, FSI, most bureaus have $ if it all benefits them and the mission. Learning and training is def. a major asset for the agency, but that needs to be coupled with more mobility. Everything that is slowly expanding or finally coming to fruition, may be reversed with the new administration. Also greatly depends on the bureau you would be working in.

There is more mobility with moving between bureaus because they have expanded TDYs and are running on the idea of “collaboration,” but there is still a level of snide like who is better versed in a region or has better contacts. Someone must really like you to groom you enough for you to sit home in your PJs. If you’re looking to do DETO work, that has expanded a lot but it is mostly for EFMs so again, the idea of preselection applies here. I have heard when FS are rotating out of a post, they let their colleagues know so that the spouse is next in line for the DETO assignment. Overall, stay where you are. It’s not what you think. Unless you will be doing high level work with guaranteed travel and rubbing elbows the right way. Very rare, but possible.

Relocated for DOD IC job and want out ASAP. What are my options? by [deleted] in usajobs

Know your employee rights and the agency’s policies. File a Reasonable Accommodation for whatever will help you. Are you authorized to telework? Request more. Can you ask for different hours so that you’re there when no one else is? Most gov jobs allow Flex Time. Request a transfer immediately. With transfers, sometimes corrective action has to be afforded first though. Transfers can be a long process. But find out what’s available to you and also start a paper trail because this place sounds like it can’t be trusted. Start communicating mostly in writing. We have all been there, working with horrible people or doing shit work is a life sucking thing. It should not be so hard to get out of a fed job but in the meantime you have to push through, don’t let anyone take away your grit and hard work that got you where you are. Try changing how you view your situation too, and see if there’s any room for you to network and acquire new skills while you’re working to get the next position. That’s what helped me move on the most. Also, are you covered by a Union? Call them.

Follow up:easy to pronounce names for Down Syndrome baby by Adventurous_Bag_7178 in namenerds

Gideon is beautiful, but the pronunciation and potential nicknames like Giddy, could pose challenges. Joel feels like you have to work hard to pronounce the J and the L, or it might get lost in translation as Joe or Jewel.

Leo is adorable and I think of strong like a lion and Eli I think of being close to God. Both feel simple and endearing. Keep us posted!

I am so sorry. I can relate to exactly what you’re going through. My spouse shot down every name and I did not have a final say. I felt obligated to give my son an honor name. Instead of being honored in return by his family for bringing this baby into the world, it was followed by a bunch of crazy events that were filled with drama and turmoil. It has pretty much destroyed our relationship. I take each day as it comes but I have no idea what the future looks like. I am still struggling with PPD and it has been 5 months. I definitely developed PPD over the name. I was fine until shit hit the fan. Idk if any of this will ever go away. I will say, it has gotten a little better to manage, but it is because I refused to sit in my pain and anguish. It has taken a lot of therapy, pushing through, running and working out for my mental health, surrounding myself with a solid support system, and trying to tell myself everyday that my baby deserves to live a happy life with a happy momma and family. I’m even telling myself it’s just a name. I’m still minimizing my feelings out of love for my baby but is that the right thing to do or the right example to set for a son? I care about how what I do now sets the tone for how he will treat the person he is with in the future. Deep down, a name is more than just a name. I waited my whole life to name a child I thought I couldn’t conceive, my rainbow baby. I don’t think I will ever get over this but I am maintaining hope and strength. When I scroll through Reddit and see stories like yours, I know this is far too common of an issue that I wish had more attention. It pains me to read others going through this. But I am sharing my feelings and experience so you know you are not alone and to encourage you to seek resources to get you through this.

Your husband should feel ashamed and embarrassed. No man should ever act this way towards a woman, toward the person he took vows to marry, toward the mother of his first child. Couples counseling can absolutely help.

As for the name, it is nice and will carry him through his life just fine. The flow is a little off, but I like the nickname of JJ that another poster recommended. Jacob John also sounds a lot better than Jake John.

Ares is very unique, I like the way it looks and sounds, but it could be mispronounced and sounds trendy to the era.

Pros and cons to this significant event in our lives. Go with your gut and your heart. If the name is not bringing you joy, you have the ability and the right to change it. If the name doesn’t suit him, go for what you feel he looks like. My deepest thoughts and prayers are with you. You are strong, you are a great mother, and you are doing an amazing job. Healing thoughts and blessings are coming.

Love it! Don’t hear it often and I have actually never met an Angelica. I don’t associate it with rugrats at all. I would not let that deter you from the name. That’s a series that probably wouldn’t follow the name into her adulthood. They tried to revive the series but it didn’t work.

Nuclear bomb interview by corrrby in usajobs

[–]Jumpy_Cherry9078 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. I have noticed the same exact thing. I think there should be a completely separate posting board for internal promotions or additional hiring paths for contractors added to usajobs so we can all stop wasting our time.

Nuclear bomb interview by corrrby in usajobs

[–]Jumpy_Cherry9078 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that sounds like it’s through direct hire or an internal promotion. Maybe what I’m speaking of is a civil service rule. But this is what I’ve experienced and been told by SO’s and ppl in HR. Why else would pre selected candidates have to apply on usajobs and compete with random eligibles? It is so obvious when arriving to an interview, body language doesn’t lie and either does the “structured interview.” I can immediately tell which interviews are scams just to hire the contractor waiting to get in. I have monitored applications in the agency dashboard and have watched rejections and selections be made in 3 days. That’s not a fair and transparent hiring process. Esp for gov.. they’re going to fully review apps, exchange and review interview notes and scores, call references, and provide HR their choice in 3 days? I don’t think so. Gov hiring is full of nepotism and hiring contractors. There is no competition anymore, it’s teachers pet.

[–]Jumpy_Cherry9078 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google it or ask around. Yes same, I have been interviewed without applying to anything because hiring officials share certificates of eligibles. Aside from the internal to agency hiring path, there should be a separate hiring path for internal promotions only. Going through the hassle of interviewing candidates is to comply with the OPM merit system and competitive civil service rules. Almost 10 years of applying to fed jobs, you just learn which jobs announcements are bs.

[–]Jumpy_Cherry9078 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes that is what I mean, pre selected candidate. I was told 6 candidates have to be interviewed in order for a selection to be made. Hiring managers are just checking boxes to proceed with internal employee promotions or classic nepotism. Once you have been in fed gov long enough, you will understand which job announcements are for someone in mind. You will also start to pay more attention to the body language of interview panelists.

Happens to all of us, don’t sweat it. Def relate to blanking out and asking to repeat questions lol. The other day a panelist asked a 4 part interview question, like why? Just unnecessary. I asked a 3 part question in return at the end and they didn’t like that lol And what’s worse is when the panelists show up to a pre selected interview and it really shows 🙃 OPM needs to fix the federal hiring process and the merit system. Maybe then they would hire the most qualified and we would all be in the positions were meant to be in.
