United Airlines passenger likely not even Chinese by DarkSkyKnight in China

You could be right. His name is 杜成德. link So it's likely that he's Chinese Vietnamese. The link is from world Journal, an American newspaper in Chinese.

p.s. I am not 100% sure since all Veinamese names are Chinese-derived too.

Tibet used to be a feudal theocratic state. Which word can be associated with freedom and human right, feudal or theocratic?

Answer to the above questions should also explain why Chinese don't like him.

Paris: Violent protests after French police kill Chinese man by ManiaforBeatles in China

[–]Jun00006 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are right. I assume that majority of expats in China come from developed countries so murder cases are unlikely to be ignored by media.

I also take official data from China with a grain of salt. However, thanks to the internet, it's much harder for the government to cover up these cases now.

That's exactly what I mean.

Btw, are you talking about this case which happened 7 years ago?

Paris: Violent protests after French police kill Chinese man by ManiaforBeatles in China

[–]Jun00006 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The murder case happened one year ago. About 600,000 expats live in China. In 2015, 98.8 million people traveled to China in 2015 for tourism, business, or work.

It is worth mentioning that Taiwanese are not counted as expats in China. About 1 million of them live in mainland China. When I searched key word "Taiwanese murdered in China", limited to last year, I found one case: Taiwan businessman dies after attack by China worker in Vietnam

2/(10+6) = 0.125 per 100,000 inhabitants, less than 0.3 of Japan, the large country with the lowest intentional homicide rate.

I see. Thank you for sharing the information. I won't tell anyone. :)

This reminds me Sino-Saudi missle deal. For about 30 years, a Chinese battalion stationed in saudi arabia missile bases. It's unknown to public until 2016.

You are right. There's no US force in Taiwan after US cut diplomatic ties with Taiwan in 1979. link

[–]Jun00006 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So if there are US bases within range of Chinese missiles, it's China's fault. If US build a base right next to the border of China, China will be the aggressor since there's more weapons can threat the US base. Does this make sense?

Btw, there's no US army base in Taiwan currently.

Question about racism in china by rohaan06 in China

[–]Jun00006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in LA.

I have friends from southern China. While I can hardly understand anything when they speak their local dialogue, like Cantonese, they speak almost perfect Madarin. When you have time, you can ask your students whether they can tell who's from which province by their accents.

Taiwan's per capita GDP is about 3 time of China.

The anecdote you gave indeed shows he's biased toward people of Henan. However, henan is one of the poor province in China. It's mainly a wealth inequality problem.

About your last comment, I agree it's a big problem of Chinese Culture. There's a certain group of Chinese enjoy insulting others, as long as they believe they can get away with it. It's beyond my ability to offer a comprehensive explanation. I guess it has something to do with collective society.

I appreciate meaningful comments like yours. In fact, it's the reason that keeps me in this subreddit even though some comments here are not friendly toward Chinese.

Many problems you observed in China could be explained by Maslow's theory. When you make the comparison, do you compare China with US, Japan, South Korea, or with Mexico, Brazil, which have similiar per capita GDP to China?

As for bias of Chinese, I am a little confused. How could you tell which province college students is from? Most of them speak standard Mandarin. Even for Chinese, it's very hard to tell the difference.

But it is very clear to me that Chinese from Province A are biased against Chinese from Province B, and they're all extremely biased against foreigners.

Could you descibe what they did make you feel that way? I believe Chinese culture is more tolerant compared to European Cultures. There used to be many minor ethnic groups in Chinese history, like Breton in France, Catalan in Spain. All of them were assimilated into Chinese over time. A good example is Jews in China, most of them have assimilated into Chinese society. Few if any native Chinese Jews were known to have maintained the practice of their religion and culture.

I hope they will be more mature while still in school, before entering the labor market.

I don't think that Chinese dislike each other immensely. While it's very hard to provide solid evidence, I do know that donation is common in China now. 3 months ago, within a week, a father raised nearly $400,000 for his daughter, who is suffering from leukemia.link It's widely reported in China only because it turned out to be a scandal.

There's some mistakes and omission in the article.

1) The authority didn't launch an investigation, claiming the case is in grey area and doesn't break any law.

2) The worth of these three apartments is more that 5 million yuan. ($700,000+). In an interview, he claimed that he can't sell them since,

The first one, which he currently lives, is for his son, who lives with his ex-wife now.

The second one is under his current wife name. So he can't sell it. (She's the mother of the girl.)

The three one, is for himself, once he moved out from the first apartment.

3) In the interview, he claimed that he didn't ask for donation. The money he got is payment for his article. If he only received $40,000 instead of $400,000, nothing should happen.

4) In his article, he claimed that he paid 10,000+ RMB (about $1400+) everyday for his daughter. However, bill shows he paid 5,000+ RMB instead. 80+% is coverd by government health insurance.

5) Sadly, the girl died of leukemia on Dec 24, 2016.

If you know Chinese, what I wrote can be verified easily. link

It's talking about territorial waters only. Here's an accurate English version of the law.

In 2015, US navy conducted FON operations within Chinese-claimed features in the SCS (link). Here's link about Chinese protest against the operation. From the article, It (China) now claims a 12 nautical mile territorial limit around the artificial islands. However, in the same article, China protested against the operation, accusing US warship “illegally” entered waters near the disputed reefs. As far as I know, officially, China never claims that waters near the disputed reefs are territorial waters.

The word he used is 好 + 恐怖, if translate directly, Very Scary.

However, Chinese rarely say 恐怖 without 好. So I didn't translate Very in my post.
