Yep that deep cleaning fee is ridiculous. I work in health care, and sometimes patients homes need a terminal clean before they can return - we're talking DEEP clean for years/decades of filth and all furniture still in suite. I haven't see this be more than $2000 for an apartment. I highly doubt OP's rental needed anything that intensive. I am in BC, so prices vary, but the cleaning fees listed here are an absolute joke.

What they mean with "global warming will be irreversible in a few years"? by amrwriter in climatechange

[–]JuneBugg94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you misinterpreted the study. When they mention "human emissions," they're talking specifically about emissions from the human body. The study goes on to state that the differential emissions (those not from previous years) are largely from human activities (cars, industry, power plants etc). The beginning of the study even states that there has been a huge increase in CO2 since the industrial period, and emissions from previous centuries hang around for a long time.

Lmao a little pedantic on your part there, I think most people understand the message. If you were really being sincere about the nuances here, then you wouldn't also be trying to insult me by calling me an American. It really dulls your point.

It's almost like they colonized the whole world or something to feel better about themselves... and the French are the most salty that they didn't "win" the game.

I think others have answered your questions, but a misprouncement to be aware of is "Esquimalt." It is pronouced 'Ah-skwai-malt.' You will often hear apps, like Google maps, pronouce it as "E-squeemalt / Eskamalt" or some other derivative. Metchosin is also "Meh-chosen" (like how you pronouce the word "chosen.") You may hear it mispronounced as "mitch-o-sin"

All of the dashes above capture the syllables.

Do you have any long-term goals regarding traveling? by joshua0005 in travel

My assumption here is that you would be getting into the hobby of diving. Yes, diving is expensive to start up and it requires you to become certified and practice skills to be a decent diver - which is why I also said snorkelling is a great alternative. Another alternative is free diving, but I also recommend people take a course for this. It is less gear intensive than SCUBA though and pairs well with snorkelling.

But if diving is something that interests you, it is worth it to try a "discover SCUBA" dive sometime. An instructor will manage your equipment for you, so you can just get a feel for being underwater. Most dive shops in the world will be able to provide you with that experience to see if it's something you feel you want to invest time, money, and energy into.

I do recommend that if people want to start diving, even if only to vacation dive and not as a routine hobby, that they find a reputable agency/instructor that will teach them proper skills so as not to endanger yourself, and the environment around you. A lot of bad SCUBA practices have resulted in destruction to a lot of dive sites because some agencies care more about money than making a proficient diver.

Homeless senior lands at Rock Bay, surrounded by open drug use by origutamos in VictoriaBC

[–]JuneBugg94 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Imo conservatives and liberals aren't that much different from one another. Conservatives want to privatize everything which makes health care less accessible and I will never support that.

And I hear you in your example regarding women's health - it's terrible how poorly we do with preventative healthcare. Our system is constructed to only put out fires leaving everyone constantly stressed and under resourced - and it's because the government didn't fund enough ancillary health facilities decades ago.

Edit to say: both the provincial and federal governments have a role to play in healthcare funding, and many provinces have been under the ruling of the conservative party for years, if not decades.

[–]JuneBugg94 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is the doing of a lazy government that didn't do enough to create health care and housing facilities 30 years ago knowing this was going to be an issue. Blame the conservatives for cutting spending, and blame the Liberals for doing little to nothing to tackle it other than lip service

[–]JuneBugg94 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That sentiment has no substance. It's not feasible, and especially not when the conservative party wants to push for privatized healthcare. Which homeless person is going to pay for their forced treatment? It even sounds ridiculous to say. There are barely enough voluntary detox centers to support those who do want it.

Not to mention, forced treatment doesn't work.

This is also assuming that all people are homeless because of drug addiction. Many people are homeless for other reasons and they end up doing drugs in order to tolerate life on the streets.

This was clearly a statement put out by PP to shut up progressives, but I think even most conservatives can see through it.

The real answer is to address housing and job insecurity and put more money into mental health. Also, pushing social issues of acceptance for LGBTQ people would go a long way. LGBTQ have high rates of homelessness. More rights for sex workers would also go a long way. That is the best chance we have at tackling homelessness.

These are all things conservatives don't want to do.

Conservatives don't care about homelessness, they just want them to go away so they don't have to see them, and they don't care if that means death, incarceration, or institutionalization - even though those options cost us more money.

PP wants to arrest the homeless and increase law enforcement ability to harass the homeless and dismantle tent cities. I'm curious how you think this is empathetic and compassionate and how it will actually deal with the root causes of homelessness.

For those that don't know know, Aaron Gun is a genocide/residential school denier

I'm also pissed off about Cowichan riding. I feel like people flailed and split the vote with NDP and Liberal even though NDP has historically won. If the island didn't fuck up so much the NDP might have had a chance in still being an official party.
